Howard Smolleck
Organist
Howard Smolleck is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Klipsch School at New Mexico State University, where he has been on the faculty for more than two decades. He has held organist positions at St. John Presbyterian Church, Dallas, Texas; Inglewood United Methodist Church, Grand Prairie, Texas; First Christian Church, Norfolk, Virginia; and University Presbyterian Church, Las Cruces, New Mexico. During the past two decades, he has played for numerous programs and worship services in Las Cruces, Norfolk, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida. He was also organist for the Voz Vaqueros during the 1984 and 1985 seasons.
During 1998 he was dean of the Las Cruces chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
His organ and piano instruction includes study with faculty at the following universities: University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Women's University, Old Dominion University and New Mexico State University. His primary areas of interest as an organist are hymn-tune improvisation and service playing techniques, and he has taught these at conferences in the North Texas area.
Dr. Smolleck grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas, and was the assistant organist in his home church, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, while in high school and college. He received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, with honors, in 1969, a M.S. in 1970 and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1975 from the University of Texas at Arlington.
