Benefits of and Reasons for using the GSDM
Very briefly, the GSDM:
- is easy to use because it is based upon rules of
solid geometry.
- is standard between disciplines and can be used the world
over. Polar regions need special treatment for convergence.
- accommodates modern measurement systems and digital data
storage technologies.
- supports both analog map plots and computer visualization
of digital spatial data.
- preserves geometrical integrity and does not distort physical
measurements as do map projections.
- combines horizontal and vertical data into a single 3-D
data base.
- facilitates rigorous error propagation and standard deviation
computations, component by component.
- provides specific mathematical definitions of datum accuracy,
local accuracy, network accuracy, and P.O.B. accuracy.
