Mike Shoberg, father of the director, 2nd degree black belt age 61, started Taekwondo training with his daughter at age 41! Many people begin Taekwondo in their 40’s and older! Don’t be shy! |

This is a story of a kid using self defense techniques, that he learned at Gold Medal Taekwondo, when he needed to use them at school:
I was playing football at school when a kid on my team got mad at me because I wouldn’t let him have the ball. He didn’t understand that the position he was playing was a position that was not supposed to have the ball.
He was really mad and put his hands on my neck like to choke me. I put my arm up and turned knocking his hands off with my shoulder like I learned in class. When he started pushing me again, I looked around for the teachers.
I saw the principal walking on the playground and went up to her and told her what happened and what I did. I didn’t even get in trouble or anything. |

Notes About Adult/Teen Classes
The Tuesday/Thursday adult/teen classes are “mixed rank” so members occasionally get to learn intermediate and advanced techniques. Members of our adult/teen classes also learn Hapkido strikes, joint locks, and throws. But, these classes include less jumping and sparring than do the mixed age and kids classes. Adult/teen members can attend kickboxing, women’s-fitness & self-defense, and joint-locking/throwing classes for no additional cost. |

I am writing this testimonial about what Gold Medal Taekwondo has done not only for my son, Matthew, but for me as well. Before joining Gold Medal Taekwondo, Matthew had no extracurricular activities that he participated in, due several conditions that he has, which at the time, we were not too sure what it was. Regular school sports would have just been a blur to Matthew and would of only made his already low self-esteem even lower. During an enrichment class offered through the schools, Matthew took a taekwondo class. He loved it. His eyes would light up every time it was “taekwondo day.” For the first time in years we saw a light in Matthew’s eyes that we had so desired to see. He finally was showing some interest in something and despite his fear of trying something new, he was willing to try out Taekwondo. The class came to an end and a few weeks went by. While at a Fourth-of-July parade, out in all the crowd, someone managed to give us a flyer for Gold Medal Taekwondo. I called and spoke to Ms. Shoberg. Within a couple of weeks we were at Gold Medal Taekwondo, with Matthew, watching his eyes just light up all over again. I was a little concerned at first for Matthew, seeing as his conditions did make it a little harder to learn new things and retain them. To my surprise, Matthew did extremely well. Matthew developed a confidence about him and loved the structured atmosphere. He seemed to flourish in the environment and learned easily from all of the instructors. Matthew also started to have better self-esteem as he sees that he can accomplish good things. He has learned to incorporate some of the things from class, like meditation, to help him in his everyday live when he feels a little overwhelmed. Finally after extensive testing, Matthew was finally diagnosed with Aspergers Autism and quite a few other conditions that involve Matthew’s brain function. When I mentioned this to Ms. Shoberg she was surprised as this would have never crossed her mind. It put a smile on my heart because little did she know that the reason she could not tell is because of how well they have all worked with Matthew and made him blossom and not one of his disabilities ever makes itself known. As a mother of an autistic child I cannot put into words the emotions that I feel when I see my child accomplish something that just delights his heart. As Matthew’s mom, I can say that I am and will be forever grateful to Ms. Shoberg, all the instructors, and Gold Medal Taekwondo for truly changing the way my son sees himself and life itself. Matthew has gained a confidence about life that I believe he would of never fully gained had he not been at Gold Medal Taekwondo. Gold Medal Taekowndo is one of God’s tools that he is using in my son’s life. Thanks to all of you! God Bless You All!
Sincerely from my heart, Renee Berry. |
