Information Technology

Introduction
Information technology (IT) is the science of computers as well as the engineering and architecture of information systems. New Mexico is an important state in the IT industry and has played an integral role in the history of computers. From Microsoft's origins in Albuquerque to Intel's production of information processors, the land of enchantment has a silicon past, present and future.

How did it all begin? Help your students learn about the invention of computers with this lesson at DiscoverySchool.com.

Classroom Integration
Computers and information technology can be taught at any age level. New Mexico's students should have the benefit of knowing the history of IT in our state and be aware that high-tech careers are available to them here. Links are provided below so that you can educate your students about New Mexico's silicon stories.

Even very young students can learn to identify the parts of the computer and how to use the computer safely. Older students will enjoy seeing the insides of a computer and finding out how computers operate. Tech-savvy students can use computer languages such as HTML to communicate with others.

Resources are listed below on how to teach computer literacy and information technology to students. Learning about computers and the way computers work can include many learning modalities not utilized when students are just sitting at the computer.

For example, students can:
*construct a hands-on model of a computer and label the parts
*run a relay to represent information exchange over the Internet
*write"codes" for their peers to act out as "computers" in a twist on the traditional charades game

Why should your students practice computer safety? Find out at the Rutgers University website.
