Psychopharmacology Training for Practicing Psychologists

New Mexico State University, in collaboration with the Southwestern Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy, offers a Masters of Arts in Clinical Psychopharmacology.  The curriculum is modeled upon the American Psychological Association recommended curriculum adopted in 1998 from the Blue Ribbon Task Force (comprised of national experts in psychopharmacology including physicians, psychiatrists, Department of Defense Demonstration Project prescribing psychologists, neuroscientists, pharmacists and nurses.)  In addition, the SIAP/NMSU program adheres to all regulations set forth by the New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners and the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners.  The program is dynamic, changing with the field, and will be modified according to recommended revisions of the American Psychological Association, 2007-2008.

Students receive extensive education in psychopharmacology, physical assessment, pathophysiology, and psychotropic/psychotherapeutic intervention in a format consistent with psychologists’ broadly humanistic tradition and biopsychosocial orientation. The NMSU/SIAP curriculum also includes an 80-hour practicum in which the psychologist in training works with a primary care physician to gain hands-on understanding of disease states and medical intervention.  The program helps students set up their second practicum, diagnosing and treating 100 patients with psychotherapy and psychopharmacology under the supervision of a physician, at practicum sites throughout New Mexico.

The goal is to provide high quality training regarding psychopharmacology, helping psychologists to work as primary healthcare providers, supporting emotional and physical well being. The training builds upon the unique expertise of psychologists as clinicians, diagnosticians, and researchers in mental health.

Prerequisites

• A doctoral degree in psychology
• A current state license as a psychologist
• Authorization to practice as a health service provider psychologist as defined by state law.

Program of Study

The SIAP program utilizes the most current approaches to medically-oriented postgraduate education.  The didactic program is organized around the concept of organ systems, as is being increasingly utilized in many US medical schools, and educational content is presented in a multi- and cross-disciplinary manner.  The program is presented in discrete 3-credit courses organized into content-based sequences of two, three and four courses.  Each course is presented over two and a half weekends approximately one weekend a month over two years.

Program Structure

This program is offered with both live classroom instruction and online to meet the individual students’ schedule, academic background and learning style. Live modules are taught live in various New Mexico locations, primarily: Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe.  In addition, it is possible to participate in live classes from your home computer, and to review archived classes through the online learning systems of NMSU.

Fees

Participants in the SIAP/NMSU program are eligible for the in-state tuition rate.  At the 2007-2008 rate, NMSU tuition for the program is $7,711.20.  In addition, there is a $75.00 SIAP administrative fee for each weekend of classes.  The total cost for the program is $9,586.20.
