New Mexico
State University, in collaboration with the Southwestern Institute for the
Advancement of Psychotherapy, offers a Masters of Arts in Clinical
Psychopharmacology. The curriculum is
modeled upon the American Psychological Association recommended curriculum
adopted in 1998 from the Blue Ribbon Task Force (comprised of national
experts in psychopharmacology including physicians, psychiatrists, Department
of Defense Demonstration Project prescribing psychologists, neuroscientists,
pharmacists and nurses.) In addition,
the SIAP/NMSU program adheres to all regulations set forth by the
Students receive extensive education in
psychopharmacology, physical assessment, pathophysiology,
and psychotropic/psychotherapeutic intervention in a format consistent with
psychologists’ broadly humanistic tradition and biopsychosocial orientation.
The NMSU/SIAP curriculum also includes an 80-hour practicum in which the
psychologist in training works with a primary care physician to gain hands-on
understanding of disease states and medical intervention. The program helps students set up their
second practicum, diagnosing and treating 100 patients with psychotherapy and
psychopharmacology under the supervision of a physician, at practicum sites
throughout
The goal is to provide high quality
training regarding psychopharmacology, helping psychologists to work as primary
healthcare providers, supporting emotional and physical well being. The
training builds upon the unique expertise of psychologists as clinicians,
diagnosticians, and researchers in mental health.
Prerequisites
• A doctoral degree in psychology
• A current state license as a psychologist
• Authorization to practice as a health service provider psychologist as
defined by state law.
Program of Study
The SIAP program utilizes the most current approaches to
medically-oriented postgraduate education.
The didactic program is organized around the concept of organ systems,
as is being increasingly utilized in many US medical schools, and educational
content is presented in a multi- and cross-disciplinary manner. The program is presented in discrete 3-credit
courses organized into content-based sequences of two, three and four
courses. Each course is presented over
two and a half weekends approximately one weekend a month over two years.

Participants in the SIAP/NMSU program are
eligible for the in-state tuition rate.
At the 2007-2008 rate, NMSU tuition for the program
is $7,711.20. In addition, there is a $75.00
SIAP administrative fee for each weekend of classes. The total cost for the program is $9,586.20.
