Jack L. Schuller - Ruidoso, NM USA

BFA in Studio Art, 1988 - University of Texas, Austin
MFA in Studio Art, 1991 - University of Texas San Antonio

My interest in art began when I was looking for a new hobby in 1967. I began teaching myself oil painting in my spare time.  I later took up other mediums, including acrylic. In 1985, circumstances conspired to allow me to indulge my burgeoning interest in the arts-in-general and I returned to school where I completed a formal education in Studio Art.

My style had already been firmly developed in the intervening years between the time I began teaching myself and when I returned to school.  While my subject matter may vary, my style has remained largely unaffected by my school experience.

Below is my first painting. The subject was taken from a small B&W illustration in an encyclopedia. The colors were what I thought they should be based on my limited observations of nature at that time. One error that stands out is the reverse coloring in the sky -- the overhead being lighter blue than the horizon line.

One thing that becoming an artist did for me was to teach me to see. Once I began painting, and realized that realistic rendering was my forte, like most artists I found that I was seeing the world like I never had before.

I have never had an interest in painting serially, although certain subject matter keeps recurring -- old and weathered churches being one favorite.  While most of my time is spent painting in either oils or acrylics, I have produced a significant body of work in other media -- watercolor, hand-pulled lithographs, etchings, engravings and relief prints, pen and pencils of different kinds, etc.

I welcome any questions you might have on the subject of art or technique and will make every attempt to either answer your question(s) or direct you to a research source.

Thanks for dropping by and come again soon.
