There are still many gaps. There is much possibility for error. I have no idea how correct some of this information is. Almost all of Uncle James' info is old and in rough draft form--much of it is undocumented. There may be some of you who will be sad or even angry when you read parts of this, because you know that a particular segment is wrong. But I present it here in good faith, so if you have information that substantiates, corroborates, conflicts with, expands, disproves, corrects, or complements any of this information, please share it with me, and I will gladly include your family line, add your comment, correct the error, and/or present your claim! Please e.mail me at jmcdgwin@zianet.com. THANK you for visiting--please come again!

Sources (also named below in red)
(1) In 1984, I inheriteda copy of the collection of my late uncle, James Bassett Gwin II, who received contributions from Julia Lee McLamore of Houston TX in 1947.
(2) Two third cousins, Dona Lee Vaughn & her brother Tom Lee provided info on Mary Ann Flynn's family after we'd met online.
(3) My late father, Adrian Sutton Gwin, who knew and learned family history from his grandmother Julia personally and from whom I inherited John F. Vardaman's old family Bible, spoke often with me about Susan Flynn and her daughter Julia.
(4) My 2nd cousin Jesse H. "Jack" Vardaman, Jr., took me on a "first class" tour of the graveyards and homesites of our family in east Alabama for several days in Jan. 2002--THANKS, Jack!
(5) Another third cousin, (who was not on line but whose son Kevin Flynn was) and I met in Feb 2002, and we've been "filling in our gaps" on Elijah E. "Bert" Flynn's family. He sent me most of the photos that appear on the Flynn Family Photos Page.
(6) In August 2002, more cousins joined the fray: Laverne McLamore Smith (my 3rd cousin) and her first cousin Pam McLamore Roberts (my 3rd cousin once removed) are descendents of Mary Ann Flynn and John Lee through their daughter Julia, and there's a lot of expansion going on in that family's branch!
24.00--Benjamin Anderson Flynn, b. unk.; d. unk.; m. 6 Jul 1831 in Coweta Co., GA, to Susan Watson of "the Watsons of Georgia" (b. ca.; d. 8 Jul 1902; bd. at Smyrna Bapt. Ch. Cem. in Coosa Co., AL); 4-5 ch.

25.03--Elijah E. (Elbert?) "Bert" Flynn, b. 1844; m. Rebecca Davis;

-- b. unk.; d. ca. 1849?
[John M. Gwin Note: According to an old story my dad, Adrian Gwin, repeated often, which story he'd heard many times growing up from his mom, Adrian "Adabelle" Vardaman Gwin, and grandmother, Julia Flynn Vardaman), Susan was of the very wealthy Georgia Watson family who adamantly disapproved of her courtship with "that Irish sectionhand, Ben Flynn." Marriage to him would be "below her" and was completely unacceptable. They threatened to disown her if she married him! And when Susan threw her family and inheritance to the wind and eloped with him, married him in Coweta Co., and moved with him to the new state of Alabama, they did just that. She gave him at least four and maybe five children. But then something happened. Benjamin Anderson Flynn dropped out of the picture. Did he die and leave her as a widow? Did he just leave her and abandon his family? No one seems to know. Susan Watson Flynn moved in with her daughter, Julia Vardaman, and died 8 Jul 1902 at approx. age 95, according to John F. Vardaman's old family Bible and her memorial stone at Smyrna Cemetery. And my father didn't remember ever hearing his mom or grandma speak about whatever happened to Mr. Flynn.]
Immediately below are, left to right, a map of Coweta County, GA, made in 1830; a ca. 1900 photograph of the Coweta County Court House, built in 1829 (this building--very possibly the place Ben and Susan were married two years later in 1831--was demolished in 1904 and a new one built); and a perspective map of Coweta County today in the state of Georgia. All of these images can be seen at the complete site, Historical Atlas of Georgia Counties, published by the University of Georgia.
Their Coweta County page is located at http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/histcountymaps/cowetahistmaps.htm.

[JMGwin Notes (continued): My Uncle James' notes say that she allegedly had a brother, Henry. I once was in touch with another internet genealogist whose farthest-back relative is a Henry Watson, but we've not yet been able to establish a link between her Henry and my Susan. If you're interested, I've collected that information and a few other possible leads at my Watson Notes page.In Jan 2002, Jack Vardaman found and gave me a copy of an article written a century or more ago by Capt. J. M. K. Guinn, then editor of The Toiler in which the article appeared, and earlier (from 1871-79) Supt. of Education in Randolph Co., AL, now published in Historical Records of Randolph County, Alabama, 1832-1900 by Marilyn Davis Barefield, compiler. This article lists B.A. Flinn (sic) as a Randolph County Commissioner from 1842-44 and contains the following short explanation and bio:
"A little explanation just here becomes necessary to a better understanding of the divisions of the county at this time:A second paper in Barefield's book is her transcription of the"1850 Mortality Schedule for Randolph County", which contains the following listing:"In 1842 Randolph County was divided into two militia regiments, and those into beats, as follows: Seventy-first Regiment: Beats - Able's, 1; Blakes, 2; Arbacoochee, 3; Casper's, 4; Lovvorn, 5; Duke's, 6; Owen's, 7; Fish-head, 8; Ninety-first Regiment: Beats- Wesabulga, 1; Roanoke, 2; Bacon Level, 3; Wehadkee, 4; Big River, 5; Wedowee, 6; Flat Rock, 7; Rock Mills, 8.
"1842--Benjamin A. Flinn [sic], Wiley Pritchett, Davis E. Grisham, and Sygmore Moore.
"B. A. Flinn lived in Able's beat. He was a Whig and made a dutiful, efficient officer, prompt in attendance, reasonable and just in his opinion and acts. He was personal friend of father's and shared his confidence. I don't remember having seen him after his term of office expired."
"Benjamin Flinn, Age 3, Male, White, Free, POB AL, Mo. Died July, Cause of Death Unknown, Days Sick (blank)"
Jack Vardaman's analysis of this listing is that it either could be referring to BAF himself with a mistranscription of his age (possibly 53 instead of 3, for example) or it could be referring to a heretofore unknown son of BA and Susan Flynn, there being no mistranscription. In my own (John Gwin's) amateur opinion, the place of birth (AL) of the deceased seems to lend more credence to the latter--to him being a young son, than it does to being B.A. himself. While we don't yet know where or when either Susan or B. A. was born, we do know that they were married 6 Jul 1831 in Susan's home state of Georgia, and we believe she was about 95 years old when she died in 1902. This would place her DOB at/about 1807. If B. A. were older than she, he'd have been born no later than 1807 and perhaps closer to 1800 if not earlier. This being the case, several questions arise. Were there Irish whites living in Alabama at the time? Would it not be more likely that BAF himself would have been born in GA or even SC than in wilderness, Cherokee-territory, pre-Horseshoe-Bend, AL? But I don't know.
But Whatever Happened to Benjamin Anderson Flynn?
That's all I have as of Jun 2007.]
Meet Ben's and Susan's Four (or Five?) Children!
25.01--John B. Flynn--b. ca. 1838; m. unk.--perhaps never;
25.02--Julia Ann Flynn, b. 1840; m. 21 Dec 1865 to John Forsythe Vardaman
25.03--Elijah E. (Elbert?) "Bert" Flynn, b. 1844; m. Rebecca Davis;
25.04--Mary Ann Flynn, b. 1845; m. 1861 to John A. Lee
-- b. unk.; d. ca. 1849?
And now take a more detailed look:
25.01--John B. Flynn--b. ca. 1838 (age 12 in 1850 census of Randolph Co., AL; in the 1840 census of Randolph Co., B.A. Flinn has only one son, age 0-5); d. unk., perhaps in the Civil War; bd. unk.; m. unk.; all I know at this point is that Jack has reported the above information.
25.02-- Julia Ann Flynn (my g-gm) b. 29 Oct 1840 in Arbacoochee, Randolph Co., AL; d. Sunday, 22 Nov 1931, at the home of her elder daughter and son-in-law, Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" and Maggie Mae Webb in Alexander City, Coosa Co., AL; bd. at Smyrna Primitive Baptist Ch. Cem. near Goodwater, AL; m. 21 Dec 1865 at Nixburg, Coosa Co. to John Forsythe Vardaman (b. 19 May 1835; d. Tues, 11 July 1906, bd. at Smyrna); 4 children; (12 grandchildren); here are some very interesting anecdotes and stories;26.01--Marshall Evart (Everett?) Vardaman, m. Clara Owens "Odie" Carlisle; (eight children)27.05--Jesse Harris Vardaman, Sr. m. Elsie Bell26.02--John William Anderson Vardaman; never married; (no children); was engaged to marry Diamond Grimmett at the time of his death, and it was she who penned his death note in the old John F. Vardaman family Bible;28.02--Jesse Harris "Jack" Vardaman, Jr.26.03--Maggie May Vardaman, m. Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Webb; (no children)
26.04--Adrian Bell/Belle Vardaman , m. James Bassett Gwin, Sr.; (four children)
27.01--James Bassett Gwin,
27.02--John Vardaman Gwin,
27.03--Julia Ida Gwin,
27.04--Adrian Sutton Gwin, m. Dorothy Lee Keeney28.01--John McDonald Gwin, m. Sharon Hamrick
28.02--Patrick Forsythe Gwin
25.03--Elijah E. (Elbert?) "Burt/Bert" Flynn,
[JMGwin Note: Cousin Homer Flynn Jr., whom I just met over the phone tonight (11 Feb 2002) believes the middle name to be Elbert because two of EEF's descendants are named Elbert; and indeed, the LDS IGI file for Louisiana does list John William Flynn as son of Elija Elbert Flynn.]
b. in the state of Georgia 3 Sep 1844
[Homer Flynn, Jr., Note: data from Sunshine's Bible and Bert's 1874 voter registration]; [JMGwin Note: However, if this 3 Sep 1844 birthdate and 5.4 Mary Ann's 17 Mar 1845 birthdate are correct, that puts them only 6.5 months apart; further, Elijah is recorded as age 7, not 6, in the 1850 census, so perhaps he was actually born in 1843, not 1844.]);
d. Aug 1878; according to oral history, both are bd. on the farm near Oak Ridge, LA, though no stone has been found; m. Rebeckah F. Davis (b. unk.; d. unk., but sometime near when Elijah died--see following note); 2 children;
[JMGwin Note: Homer Flynn Jr. tells me that the Davises and Flynns had come from Alabama and are some of the oldest graves in the local cemetery, although Elijah "Bert" and Rebecca are allegedly buried out at the farm (no markers have survived, however), not in town;--the information supplied by Uncle James said that "Burt"'s middle name was "Burton" (Jack Vardaman tells me that indeed, the 1850 census of Randolph Co., AL, shows Elijah "Bert" as "E. Burton"); however, Homer has a copy of the above voter registration document where Bert signed his name Elijah E. Flynn; Homer speculates that the middle name is Elbert--not only because of the nickname Bert, but also because two of Elijah's descendants are so named];
[Homer Flynn, Jr., Note: Elijah and Rebecca lived on cotton land he owned some four miles east of Oak Ridge, a small farming community in Morehouse Parish, LA, some 60 miles wnw of Vicksburg MS; son John William inherited the farm and added on to it later. One of the family members still owns the old homeplace, so it's still in the family.][John Gwin Note: Notes below in this dark green are those Homer Flynn, Jr., sent me in early April 2002 on Post-It Notes (which were stuck to photocopies of various old documents)--non-italics here represent what is typed in these notes; italics represent handwritten material; indented entries in coffee are photocopies of pages of the original documents.]
Note 1: This is the voter registration of Elijah E. Flynn that I spoke to you about on the telephone. It dispelled any doubt, to me, that his name was Elijah E. Flynn. We just don't know much about him yet. Since we also believe his middle name was Elbert, they could very well have called him Bert. He was married to Rebekah (sometimes spelled Rebecca) Davis, but I don't know if he married her in Oak Ridge or if he brought her there. There were Davis's who were early settlers in Oak Ridge.

Above, l-r: obverse, reverse. Elijah E. Flynn registered to vote in Morehouse Parish, LA, on 22 Sep 1874, stating that he was born in Georgia (sic!) in 1844 and had resided in Louisiana since 1867, some seven years. This is the first we've seen or heard that Susan may indeed have returned to Georgia, if only briefly, and had at least Elijah there. Would it have been to allow the Watson grandparents to see their grandchildren after all? Ah, perhaps it was to allow the Flynn grandparents to see their grandchildren.
Note 2: FAMILY RECORD pages from "A Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible". I have this book, and it's in pretty bad shape, but my grandparents filled in these lines as if it were a Bible. I believe there is a Family Bible someplace. The story is that my father changed his name from Bernie Lester to Homer. I never asked him about this and it has been mine and his name all these years. His birthdate is wrong; I know he was born in 1904. The Bledsoes on the Marriages page are my grandmother and her sisters. Homer Flynn, Jr. February 2002 [John Gwin Note: Indeed, the entry shown below clearly has the name Bernie Lester scratched out and "Homer" penned in over it.]_

OK, Lee researchers, Isaiah and Demaris Lee are the head of the family so far, then--go for it!]--); Mary and John moved to Wood County, Texas, in 1871, settling in the Cartwright Community circa 1873; John, a Confederate veteran, had enlisted in 1862 and served until the war's close (Tom and Dona have his "safe conduct" from Appomattox). He was a private in Co. B of the 60 Reg't Alabama Infantry; Mary Ann reports 8 of 11 children still living in 1900 census;

This
is
our Susan Flynn, my gg-grandmother. If this enumerator recorded her
age correctly, then Susan married when she was about 13 or maybe
14. Further, since we know she married in 1831, she MUST have had
other children--perhaps three--older than John B. who is only 12
here. The mystery deepens. |

Amazing!
We'd
always heard that Susan's parents, of "the Watsons of Georgia",
had disowned her when she married Ben Flynn. Now here, in 1850,
living two doors down, is a Watson family with the same name and middle
initial as Susan's oldest son! Further, he has no
occupation--could this be because he is independently wealthy?
Could this be her brother, come to Alabama to find her and protect
her? Further, could his coming be the reason that Ben Flynn left? |

Following is the entire and unedited (except for typos) text of a typed letter dated 9 Mar 1919 from Maggie May Vardaman Webb (John Gwin's grandaunt) of Alexander City, AL, to her first cousin, John William Flynn (Homer Flynn's grandfather) of Oak Ridge, LA. The photocopy was sent to me by Homer Flynn, Jr. February 20025.3--Maggie May Vardaman, b.Weds., 28 Sep 1870; d. 1952; m. 15 Dec 1885 to Thomas Jefferson Webb (b.; d.); lived in Kelleyton and settled in Alexander City, Ala.; no children
[The letterhead of this 2-page, typewritten letter, has a disclaimer at the top in fine print followed by the company logo in an illuminated font, something like this: ]
ALL AGREEMENTS CONTINGENT UPON STRIKES ACCIDENTS AND OTHER DELAYS UNAVOIDABLE OR BEYOND MY CONTROL.
J. M. STEVERSON
LUMBER
MANUFACTURER.
Alexander City, Ala.
March 9th, 1919
[Maggie, b. Sep. 1870, was age 48 at this time.]
My Dear Cousin John:-Needless to say that I was glad indeed to get your letter of the 12th, and such a nice newsy one too. I am always glad to get letters, and espexially from my kinfolks, that I think a lot of, now that is so, don't laugh and say it is "bosh" for it is not:
The latter part of your letter is what I liked to read, where you said that you and wife was coming, and bring your little daughter with you. [Maggie was probably referring to'Nita Flynn, who would be 7 in April 1919, as all the other daughters but possibly Rebecca were older--most were grown. John and Della had just celebrated their 26th anniversary.] I am looking for that time to come and if you can so arrange it, to let me know awhile before you come, I will try to get some time off, so I can be with you all, while you are here, for you know that my time is not my time while I am working for someone else, and I try my best to give my best, when I am doing anything, and it is the same way when it is for someone else.
Listen, cousin John, what do you think I did not tell you before, that I have to attend to it all here, rather I am general manager here, as I tell them "chief cook and bottle washer", that is very good is it not? The boss stays in Birmingham all the time comes down here about once sometimes twice a month, that is why I said that if you could let me know sometime ahead, maybe I could arrange to get out some while you are here.
I will get my cousin Delia to tell me all about the children when she comes, it seems from the tone of your letter that you are like the old woman who lived in a shoe, "had so many children she didn't know what to do", but I just bet you did know all the time, and they knew if they did not mind you, say Cousin Delia is that not so, or is he like the most of the men, leave the children for you to attend to the most of the time, while he is away trying to make money, I bet I guessed it right.
Listen, both of you, I have the record beat for hatching chickens, and I had better get busy if I get any for you to eat while you are here, for I set 3 hens, and only got 12 chickens, from 45 eggs, 2 got in a tin cup and drown themselves, and the hen mashed one, that left me 9, that is my crop so far. I will set two more hens this week. Will buy some eggs for them. We killed one pig, about 150#, and have 4 small shoats in the lot now, for next fall. They are one of a size, but I think they will make us enough meat for another year and some to sell. We do not keep a cow, but buy milk and butter, we use about $6.00 worth a month, that beats feeding a cow, besides attending to her, and we drink milk all the time, but of course do not have any sweet milk to amount to anything.
We keep a horse here, and also plenty of corn, guess we might be termed farmers, as we rent out land and get in the rents. But my, the gov't is getting the most of what people make this day and time, they get the Taxes, then the town tax, then the imcome tax, and Lord only knows what they will get next, guess it will be part of us but then I had rather they would do that, if they had got the "Keiser" is all I regret, they quit just a little too soon. [end page one]
Alexander City, Ala. ALL AGREEMENTS CONTINGENT UPON STRIKES ACCIDENTS AND OTHER DELAYS UNAVOIDABLE OR BEYOND MY CONTROL.
J. M. STEVERSON
LUMBER
MANUFACTURER.See I did the most of my correspondence on the mill, and I trust you will excuse me for this, but, it is so much better for you, as you can read it this way, and if I took my fingers, you could not read it at all.
This is Monday morning, and about time that I was going to my work so I will close this letter, as I fully intended to write a lot more, but suppose that you have a "dose" enough for this time anyway, and it is be better that I am in a hurry this morning, I go to work at 7 A.M. and quit in the P.M. at 6, and have one hour for lunch.
I will be expecting to hear from you as to the time that you will come to see us, when you fully decide the time, and be sure to let me hear from you and Delia also. Tell her that if I have not seen her, that is no reason that she cannot say a word to me, that she will have talk when she comes and she just as well to talk now, and not wait until then, and we can begin to get acquainted. [Evidently John and Della traveled east very little, as Maggie not only doesn't know Della's correct name after 26 years, she also has not yet met her! Since they likely traveled little, and since my dad's photo is only of 'Nita, not Rebecca, it is likely that the picture was taken on this same trip, probably the summer of 1919.]
Well love to all, as the clock has struck and I am not quite ready to start. Looking for the letter telling us when you will start and what time you expect to come.
From your cousin Maggie

To: john, jmcdgwin@zianet.comJohn, I was so glad to see your post on the Flynn Family Genealogy Forum about Benjamin Anderson Flynn who m. Susan Watson. My brother, Tom Lee, has
answered your post on the forum, but I wanted to share with you the information we have.Mary Ann Flynn was born March 17, 1845 and died November 10, 1904. She married John A. Lee (born Feb. 24, 1839, died November 29, 1902). We did not have the marriage date until your post, and we do not have John's parents.
Mary and John moved to Wood County, Texas, in 1871. They settled in the Cartwright Community circa 1873. John was a Confederate veteran. He enlisted in 1862 and served until the close of the war (We have his "safe conduct" from Appomatox). He was a private in Co. B of the 60 Reg't Alabama Infantry. Their children were John. B., Susie, Mariah, Cynthis (I'm wondering if this is a typo in the letter from the genealogical society and the name is actually Cynthia), Julia, Stella, Levi L., Ben F., and Everett Festus (my grandfather).
I cannot tell you how thrilled we are to learn the names of Mary Flynn's parents (our gg-grandparents). I am in touch with one of the children of Ben F. and I will share this information with her!
Have you managed to trace the Flynns and Watsons to the next generations?
John, You did a great job putting together the pieces of this puzzle!I am certain your Plausible Theory is right. I'm sure Tom remembers, as I do, our being told as children that our great-grandfather John walked all the way home from Appomattox. I remember hearing that when he got home, so filthy and covered with lice, that he wouldn't let anyone near him until he had bathed, and that his old clothes were burned.

My grandfather was Homer Flynn (he never used Sr. that I remember). He lived in Oak Ridge, La. His brothers and sisters were John Harold, J.W. (Ted), Bennie, Jewel, Sunshine... all of which I saw in your info today. I think my father said his grandfather was Elijah... he'll have to clear that up for you. I hope we can be of some mutual interest and information to each other. --Kevin

To: John Gwin, jmcdgwin@zianet.comMy father is Homer Flynn Jr. He is not computer literate, so I'll print this information for him. He said he would be glad to talk with you and exchange information. His phone number is <private--not posted here>. If you choose to contact him, give it a few days for me to get this material to him and for him to "study it".

Kevin Flynn,Are you who I hope you are? Is Homer Flynn, Jr., who I hope he is? I mean, is your line something like: Kevin, son of Homer Jr., son of Homer Sr., son of John Flynn, son of Burt Flynn, son of Benjamin Anderson Flynn and Susan Watson Flynn?
If so, then you and I are 3rd cousins once removed, and you and my son are 4th cousins. And your dad and I are 3rd cousins, and I REALLY want to talk to him. Are you sure I can't call him now? Huh? Huh? Can I? Please, canIcanI?

Excerpts from my first two letters from Homer Flynn, Jr.:23 Feb 2002
Cousin John--
...A little side story--My wife's name, before we married, was Abney Dell Scanland. Her father was Abney Downs Scanland, and his mother Adelaide Amelia Abney. The Scanlands and the Abneys lived in Bossier Parish, LS. Adelaide had a brother named Frank Abney, who lived in Charleston, WV, and was president of the bank there. I never met any Abneys and don't know how he got from Louisiana to WV, but since you had some connection with Charleston, I thought it would be interesting if you had ever known or heard of the Abney family.I have sent a copy of the material from the internet to my cousin Brenda Epinette Grammer, Sunshine's granddaughter. She lives at Archibald, LA, and has spent many hours researching the Flynn family. Also I have sent a copy to my cousin Hugh Parker, Jewell's son. Hugh is an architect and lives in Bastrop, LA but has his office in Monroe, LA. Hugh is a paraplegic, having had polio when he was about 17. Nevertheless, he went on to LSU and became an architect. I respect him greatly for what he has done, and his outlook on life. He is 67 years old, has two daughters, three granddaughters, and wants to retire.
John, it is a great pleasure for me for you to have come into my life with all of the family information you have. One day we will meet, and talk, and enjoy every minute.
Best regards, Homer Flynn, Jr.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 April 2002
Cousin John:I was in Oak Ridge last month and took some pictures at the cemetery; copies are enclosed for you. This is the Baptist Cemetery, with the oldest grave on record to be 1847--William Davis, who, I believe, was somehow related to Rebecca Davis Flynn, wife of Elijah. I have not been able to verify this yet.
...Homer, Sr. (Doby) was my father, and was nicknamed Doby all his life. My mother was called Tin-tin by my children, trying to say Mrs. Flynn because that is what my wife called her.
I have just today noticed something that we need to straighten out. I have a little booklet, penned by Sunshine, that says Elijah was born Sept. 3, 1844. Your data, taken by my son from the internet, says that Mary Ann Flynn was born 17 Mar 1845. Since they were brother and sister, and since these dates are only 6 minths apart, obviously something is wrong. I spent several years trying to learn something about Elijah with no luck until your information came along. I began to wonder if Elijah was trying to hide his past for some reason. Anyway, there is still a lot to learn.
Best regards to you, and to any of my cousins that you are in touch with.

Subject: Watsons in Monroe CountyI saw your posting of Thomas Watson's will on genforum. He was my ggg-grandfather. His sons George and Josiah are both my gg-grandfathers. George's son Jackson was father of John Franklin, my g-grandfather, and his son Josiah was father of Mary Susan, my g-grandmother. My brother has been interested in genealogy for a long time and has spent much time in the Monroe and Conecuh Co. courthouses and the cemeteries in the area. He has a lot of information that came from a genealogist with good documentation. He has gotten me interested. He has a copy of the Zachary family Bible with the Zachary family and Thomas family. It is very hard to read, but it shows Susanna Watson, born 14 Aug 1797 m. Nathan Coker, and Polly Watson, born 28 Apr 1787 m. Thompson Coker. According to all the information I can find, Thomas left Columbia Co., GA, around 1815 with son George and maybe 1-2 other sons. Wife Susanna most likely had died. Thomas m2. Ann Dunnam 18 Nov 1817 in Baldwin Co..
My ancestors remained in Monroe Co., so they are pretty well tied down. I am real interested in finding how Thomas got to Columbia Co. GA, and what the migration path was.
The passenger list for the Georgia Packet has George Watson and wife Mary, with son Thomas, 12 years old and 3 other children. We have his dob as 10 Oct 1764.
I live in Melbourne Beach, Fl, but go often to Monroe Co. The little Heritage Museum in the old courthouse building has a good file on a Josiah who was in Civil War.
Two of Thomas' sons, Peter and Thomas, were killed by Indians in Three Notch in 1836.
I don't know if any of this is interest to you, but if you think I might have access to information that will help you, let me know. Thomas and his sons had several land transactions that are available at www.glorecords.blm.gov
Miriam Watson McKinley
The George and Mary Watson who sailed on the Georgia Packet are thought to be Thomas Watson's parents. The book "Passenger and Immigration List index 1st Edition, Volume 3 O-Z, edited by Wm Filby with Mary K Meyer, published by Gale Research C. Book Tower Detroit 48226. I also found the same information in a book by Coldham, but I haven't located the reference to that. At any rate, it says they sailed from Newcastle on the Tyne to Georgia. Lists George 36, shoemaker, Mary 33, children Thomas 12, Isabella 10, Mary 5, and Douglas, 2. The dates and Thomas age would be consistent with our Thomas. My Mom was a Nichols. She had a sister, Pearl, who married Emmitt Coker. He would have been born in late 1800's. We had pretty much lost touch with her children, but we are planning a Nichols reunion for the fall. My sister called last night to tell me that she had located some of them and had addresses. I will question them to see if they have any information on their father's ancestors. They lived in Conecuh County back in the 1940's.
My focus now is to try to rule in or out the Thomas coming on the Georgia Packet. The Zachary's (his wife, Susanna Zachary) came into Georgia from Virginia. I have not determined where Thomas and Susanna were married.
The Watson-Green cemetery (where Thomas is buried) was long neglected, but my brother spearheaded a restoration, so that now it is fenced and cared for. His tombstone is well-preserved.

Reply-To: ran-clay@rootsweb.comTim, I'm very interested in the Mahala Easts that you've mentioned.
My GGGrandmother, was an Eliza Armour. She had a sister named Mahulda Armour, who married a Zealous East--Eliza, Mahulda, and another sister Mary; their parents were Andrew Armour, and Rachel Griggs.
I've always wondered if there was a connection with this Margaret Gregg. I believe she may have been in Troup Co. at one time.

Margaret Gregg-East is bd. at Liberty Ch. of Christ in Randolph Co., along with the family of John Nelson Gregg; he was killed in the Civil War.
John Nelson Gregg was the son of John Gray Gregg and Rebecca Gladney.
I have always thought there is a connection between the set of Greggs that married into the Armours. Linda

Mahulda Armour was my GGGGrandmother and I consider her one of the most interesting members of my family that I do not know much about. I would love to share information if you are willing. To share, I have some Bible entries, a tin type picture of a person named A G Armor (knew her dad was named Andrew but I have not documented it formally), and some family documents that have been passed down. The documents are mostly generated by her children dealing with estate matters. I also have many of the East grave markers photographed.
I would love to share information with any of you. I am still a novice genealogist, but I am trying to do a good job documenting what I do record. I would love to flesh out her family and know a little more about them as people.
Thanks! Bill Belcher

On another note. My HORN family has been linked back to Troup GA also.
The father of the Zealous East below is a Benjamin East b 1805, the father of my other Zealous East was Stephen East b 1780.

Note:
Sandra sent me the following information which she says she obtained from C
R East.Zealous Ray East served in Company G, 46th Alabama infantry, CSA army. Hefirst enlisted in the Wesobulga (now Cragford) Pioneers as a drummer. The Wesobulga Pioneers were organized July 21, 1860 in Wesobulga, Clay Co. He is found in the 46th Alabama as a private in Company E a member of Capt.
Handley's Company May 14, 1862 on an enlistment roll for 3 years of war. He next appeared as a Private in a list of POW's at Vicksburg MS July 11, 1863. Next Listing is a parole at Vicksburg, MS dated July 4 1863. He next is listed on a list of men furloughed at Enterprise MS July 22, 1863. One can assume he was furloughed for a period of time to return home. The next listing of Z R East in the offical records is a receipt for clothes dated April 30, 1864 as Sergeant in Company 5, 46th Alabama Infantry. The next listing is where Sgt Z R East appears on a roll of prisoners caught near Atlanta, Ga July 30, 1864. He was transferred to Louisville, Kentucky arriving there on August 5, 1864. He was then sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, arriving on August 6, 1864. On March 4, 1865 he was found on a record of prisoners transferred to Center Point, Virginia for exchange. The above is verbatim what Sandra sent me. There are a few problems with this that I need to research. First how can he be paroled on July 4 when he was listed as a POW on July 11. Second is it possible to go from Kentucky on August 5 and arrive in Ohio the next day? I presume this was on horseback.

This is so exciting!!What info I have, is sort of sketchy.
I have that the mother and father were Andrew Armour, and Rachel Griggs.
They were married in 1810 in Jackson Co. Ga.Rachel died, according to the info I have, and they migrated to Troup Co.
Ga.My Eliza, was married to Johnson Hodges, and her sister, Mary, was married
to Sherrod? Hodges, they were brothers.Mary and Sherrod, and Mahulda and Zealous East were married in Troup Co.
Ga., and Eliza and Johnson were married in Macon Co. Al. in 1843.If you will look at the info on USGENWEB for Green Co. Ga., someone has
posted info on the Armour's going back to a James Armour.I have that Andrew was born in 1781 in Tenn. I think he was from Giles Co.
I have that Rachel Griggs was born in 1837 in Jackson Co. Ga. I have a
feeling that her father may have been a George Griggs, as I did find some
info on a George Griggs, in Jackson Co. Ga., and they did name a child
George. It states that they had 14 children, and some of them were: Polly, Mahulda,
Eliza, Mary, Robert James, George and don't have info on any of the others.I know that some of them went out to Texas.
I have info that Andrew died in 1864 in Randolph Co. Al.
I have that Mahulda and Zealous East, were in Chambers Co. Al.

I have more information on descendants but this is as far back as I've been able to find. I have no idea what the A. stands for but it very well could be Anderson. If you have any questions about anyone or anything please ask. I'm not trying to be vague but I don't want to bombard you with information that is of no use to your research.
Thanks for all your information. Looks like "I" (we) have so much more investigating to do with these elusive FLYNNS.John Gwin <jmcdgwin@zianet.com> wrote:Thursday 11/30/2006 1:34:31pm

Comments: I am researching the surname FLYNN from Talladega. I am wondering if the Julia A. Flynn married to the Vardaman in your family is the same as mine. My Julia is the daughter of William A. and Polly C. Flynn. Julia was born about 1839. Thanks!
===========================Hello, Denise--thanks for signing the guest book--good to meet you! It could be that our Julias are related at the first cousin level. Mine is the daughter of Benjamin Anderson Flynn and Susan Watson who eloped and were married in Coweta County, GA. (I have copied that portion of the page below in case you want to refer to it again.)
The problem is that we know nothing of our Benj. A. Flynn's parents or siblings. Your Julia's dad, William A. (his middle name wouldn't be ANDERSON by any chance, would it?) could easily be his brother, and we wouldn't know it. If you know any more about this Wm. A. Flynn of yours, please let me know.
I'm copying this mail to my cousin Jack Vardaman who is also very interested in our Flynn line.
Thanks again, and best to you,
In Jesus,
John (Contact information:)
