and Anna Louisa Turner |
The Gwin families came from Wales, where the name means "white". All known spellings of Gwin are believed to be related, including Gwinn, Guyn, Guynn, Gwyn, and Gwynn. The first Gwins in America settled on the east coast in the 1740's in Virginia and migrated into Georgia and Alabama.

*1 Annie Turner--We know that Rufus King Gwin (16 May 1853 - 20 Aug 1927) married an Ann Turner. If this is the Annie Turner who is living at the William Gwin home in the 1870 census, then she is very likely the oldest child (excluding Walter Roark) of Rufus King's Aunt Mary--i.e., Mary Gwin, William's sister, widow of Drury Roark, and bride of second husband Mr. Turner on 17 May 1849--this date would make Mary Gwin Roark Turner's firstborn about 19 in the 1870 census, the exact age of the above Annie Turner. It would also mean Rufus and Ann were first cousins. We know that Mary's first husband Drury Roark died when their only child, Walter, was just 3 or 4; we know Walter himself was killed at Gettysburg in 1863; and we know that Annie was living with Will and Roe in 1870. Could Mr. Turner have also died and Mary just not been able to handle it? Could Mary also have died, leaving Annie as an orphan? Aha! Today (25 Oct 2001) I see from the 1850 census that indeed, Mary and Abel Turner's daughter IS named Anna, who is listed as 4 months old on Nov. 7, 1850, when the census was taken!
25.01--Mary Ann Elizabeth Gwin b. 23 April 1843; d. 23 Jan 1882; m. 25 Jan 1866, Dallas Co., AL, to Robert Guy Lochridge (b. 2 Feb 1838; d. 15 June 1926)--more at their Lochridge page--click links to go there;25.02--Martha Jane Gwin (1845-1847); -- died as infant
25.03--William Sutton Gwin, J. P. --b. 5 Jun 1848; d. 11 Sep 1916; m. 2 Dec 1868 to Ida Eliza Basset, b. 5 May 1845; d. 8 Dec 1907;
25.04--John Wesley Gwin, M. D., b. 15 Mar 1851; d. 29 Aug 1877, age 26;
25.05--Rufus King Gwin b. 16 May 1853; d. 20 Aug 1927, age 74 (but Mark Hall, below, sent the following: "His death notice was in the Tampa Tribune dated 31 August 1929. His funeral notice was in the Tampa Tribune dated 02 September 1929." And tonight, 12 Apr 2003, Mark sent me more, as follows: "John, I found Rufus K. GWIN on the 1910 census of Hillsborough County, Florida. He is in enumeration district 41, sheet 13-B, household 224, stamped page number 20-B. The names listed are Rufus K., Anna, and Lillian GWINN. Mark"); bd. Woodlawn Cem., Tampa, FL; m. "at the residence of Mr. William Gwin, Wilsonville, 24 Dec 1873, by Rev. N. H. Self" (from The Shelby Guide, Columbiana, AL, Thursday, 1 Jan 1874) to Anna Louisa Turner--(b. ca. June-July 1850--age four months on 7 Nov. in the 1850 census and age 29 in 1880 Census; d. 13 Mar 1913; bd. Woodlawn Cem., Tampa, FL);-3 ch. ** All evidence seems to point to this being the same Annie Turner who is living at the William Gwin home in the 1870 census [see above], and if so, then she is very likely the oldest child (excluding Walter Roark) of Rufus King's Aunt Mary Turner--i.e., Mary Gwin, William's sister, widow of Drury Roark, and bride of second husband Mr. Abel Turner on 17 May 1849--this date would make Mary Gwin Roark Turner's firstborn about nineteen years old in the 1870 census, the exact age of Annie Turner. It would also mean Rufus and Anna were first cousins.]

26.03--Lilly N. Gwin [Mark Hall, below, quotes the 1900 or 1920 census: "Lilly N. Gwin", and a gravestone says "Lillian Noble Gwin"], b. ca. 1878 (age 2 in 1880 Census); d. 06 Nov 1967, according to that gravestone; bd. Woodlawn Cem., Tampa, FL; m. never; no known ch.; [Mark Hall Note: Lillian Noble GWIN was enumerated on the 1935 & 1945 Hillsborough County, Florida state census. On the 1935 Hillsborough County, Precinct 18: go to image #6. She lived at 2818 Nebraska Avenue in Tampa, her age is listed as 54, single, born in Alabama, she had a B. S. degree, and was a school principal. If you then go the 1945 census, she was in Hillsborough County, Precinct 28, image #1920. She still lived at 2818 Nebraska Avenue in Tampa, her age is listed as 55, college education and still a school principal, (she was 54 on the 1935 census & on the 1880 Shelby County AL census dated 29 JUN 1880 she is shown as 2 years old. I have her birth date as 15 JUL 1878 but on the social security death index it is 15 JUL 1880).]
The sources of Uncle James' records are undocumented; nevertheless, he has Rufus and Anna having four daughters, not three (this concurs with Anna's 1900 census report that she bore four children, only three of whom lived to 1900) and in a different order, as follows:26.01--Lillian Gwin, unmarried

Mark A. Hall[John M. Gwin RESPONSE: Thanks, Mark--fantastic work! Sure enough, when I went to Tampa Florida's Woodlawn Cemetery website and did a search for GWIN, the following table with these five results popped up.
Of the five, Anna, Lillian, and Rufusare clearly the same as the family members above of the same names.
Lula K. Gwin, however, is listed as having died in 1991. Because she is buried in the same plot and the dates of birth and death work out to fit this theory, I believe this to be Rufus and Annie's daughter, Lula K.(King?) Gwin, and that her date of death is 1891 instead of 1991, the error being on the cemetery webpage.
Further, since the grave of Charles W.(Wesley?) Gwin is also in the same plot, I believe there are only three possiblitie s: either he is
(1) a late-in-life baby of Rufus and Anna (if so, C.W. G. would've been born when Rufus and Anna were ca. 49 and 52, respectively, or he isRegardless, though he was born too late for the 1900 census and died before the the 1920 census, the 1910 census should tell the story, if we can find it, as it should list Charles' parents.]
(2) the illegitimate son of the never-married Lillian Noble Gwin, in which case she would've been 24 when he was born;
(3) the only other possibility that I see is that Lillian could've been married long enough to have her son, then divorced and taken back her maiden name.

KING, William Rufus, vice president of the United States, was born in Sampson Co., North Carolina, 6 Apr 1786, and died near Cahawba, Dallas Co., AL, . His father, William King, served as a member of the North Carolina convention that was called to adopt the constitution of the United States, and was also for many terms a delegate to the general assembly.
The son was graduated at the University of North Carolina in 1803, studied law with William Duffy, of Fayetteville, and was admitted to practice in 1806. The same year, he was elected a member of the state legislature and was appointed by that body solicitor for the Wilmington district. He served for two years in that capacity and on resigning was again returned to the legislature for the years 1808-09. The following year Mr. King was elected to a seat in congress as a War-Democrat and, though the youngest member of that body, became conspicuous for his zealous support of President Madison.
He remained a member of congress until 1816, when he accepted the appointment of secretary of legation to Naples in association with William Pinckney, afterward accompanying Mr. Pinckney to Russia in the same capacity.
On his return from Europe in 1818, Mr. King removed to Dallas Co., AL, and served as a delegate to the convention that organized a state government. On the adoption of the state constitution, he was elected U.S. senator, and served until 1844, when President Tyler appointed him minister to France. The proposed annexation of Texas was at that time exciting the opposition of England, and it was believed that France might be persuaded to join in the protest. Mr. King, who earnestly favored the undertaking, insisted on receiving from Louis Philippe a frank avowal of his policy. The reply was satisfactory, and annexation took place without opposition from any of the European powers. In 1846 Mr. King was recalled at his own request, and in 1848 he was appointed United States senator in place of Arthur P. Bagby, who had been made minister to Russia. In 1849 he was elected for the full term of six years, and in 1850 he served as president of the senate.
In 1852 Mr. King was elected vice president of the United States on the ticket with Franklin Pierce, but failing health forced him to visit Cuba in 1853, where the oath of office was administered by special act of congress. He returned to this country, but with health so completely shattered that he died the day after reaching home. President Pierce paid a tribute to Mr. King's memory in his annual message, and the usual resolutions were passed in both houses of congress. Mr. King was about six feet tall and remarkably erect in figure. He was a fine talker and a most interesting companion.
His elder brother, Thomas D. King, soldier, was born in Duplin Co., North Carolina 22 Sep1779 and died in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 24 February 1854. He was educated at the University of North Carolina and was frequently elected to the legislature, in which he served in both houses. He became major in the 43d United States infantry on 4 August 1813 and remained in the service until peace was declared in 1815.
This is the Alabama home of Vice-president William
Rufus DeVane King, neighbor and friend of Isom Gwin of Athens, Dallas Co., AL, who served with Isom's brother, Chesley R. Gwin, as an executor of Isom's will after Isom died. He is the namesake for Isom's nephew, Rufus King Gwin. This photo was published in a magazine just after Vice-president King died. |
