The following information was copied from the good query
posted
at the address below, not for the purpose of claiming authorship or
ownership
or for monetary gain, but for the purpose of possibly expanding the
exposure
of its content and for the putting of its information into my format
for
its possible meshing with my own Gwin family and to increase my own
understanding
of it.

We have not yet found any indicators that this family and
ours
are related; however, we believe that this is a good possibility.
Double-fifth

Also seeking living descendants and info on GWIN
family in VA, NC, TN, IL, MO, KS--oldest known ancestor on this line is
Elias
GWIN who was married first to Rebecca Beckham in Warran
Co.,
NC, then to Tabitha WEATHERFORD in TN. After Tabitha's death
around
1830, Elias and his 10 children moved to Macoupin Co, IL.
Sons, James H. GWIN (my gg grandfather) and Elias GWIN

married into the STROUD family) moved to Bourbon Co., KS.
There is a schoolhouse still standing, though
probably
not for long due to Highway improvements, on the old GWIN homestead

Particularly looking for info on Carrol DOBBINS
who married Amelia H. PERKINS prior to 1847, possibly in Vernon
Co., MO. Amelia was living in Lawrence, KS in 1870 (I
believe).
Not sure what happened with this marriage. Carroll DOBBINS is not
listed
with her in 1870 list of settlers in Lawrence, KS. Divorce? Death?
Amelia
may have remarried in Douglas Co., KS around 1890 or so.
Also seeking any living descendants of any of
these lines.

Subject: Macoupin County IL Gwins
John and Jim,
I took a little time tonight to work online on William Gwin whom we
found in the 1850 and 1860 Macoupin Co., IL censuses (censi?).
There is a George Gwin family on the same page as William in
1850. George was born abt 1788 in VA. I decided to google for him and
got

Subj: TN Query Date: 1997-11-28
From: DarleneA@aol.com
My gggg-grandfather, Elias GWIN married first Rebeccah BECKHAM in
Warren
Co., NC. Rebeccah must have died before 1813 or so as he married
Tabitha
WEATHERFORD, daughter of Money WEATHERFORD about that time and
they
lived in Bedford Co., TN for about 20 years. Tabitha died about
1830 and Elias GWIN took his/their 10 children to Macoupin Co, IL where
her mother and brothers had moved around 1820-ish after Money died.
I have been told the Bedford Co., TN, courthouse records burned before
the Civil War. Is there another source for records from this area???
Any help appreciated.

These two posts appear to be from the same person, but the second has
some additional details.
I have seen this Elias Gwin connection in Virginia a lot on the web.
I gather either he isn't in our lines, or isn't related at all. Do you
guys know anything about him? (Incidentally, I am also related to the
Meek
family, most likely. Joe Meek, the mountain man was the son of a Walker
woman, and also probably the cousin of Joseph Reddeford Walker and Joel
Walker, two other famous mountain men.)
Still looking!

Hi Mr. Gwin -
Got your message. Have you had time to check my posted Gwin info? I
am related to Elias Gwin who traveled from TN to Macoupin Co., IL, when
he lost his wife, Tabitha Weatherford, daughter of Money Weatherford.
Elias's
son, William Gwin, was my next ancestor in line, then on to William's
son,
James H. Gwin, who moved to Bourbon Co., KS, and had my
great-grandmother,
Sarah Elizabeth Gwin. Does any of that ring any bells? I really don't
know
much about that line other than names. Any info you might have to share
(or pictures) would be greatly appreciated.

Macoupin
Co., IL
[John M. Gwin Note: The
photo of the census page below was sent to me by Cousin Mike Walker
who suggests that the William Gwin
in line 37 below could be the firstborn son of our subject, William
and Susanna Gwin, and I agree, since:
(1) his age is right, according to
the
above-referenced 1830 census,
(2) his name is right (to be a "junior"),
(3) his state of birth is right,
(4) his current place of residence would make
sense if, for example, he had decided to "agree with Grandpa Isham" and
move north to avoid his dad's and uncle's attractions to slavery, and
(5) the places of birth of his children fit.
Mike's theory seems to me to be very
plausible,
and I think we should pursue it.]

transcribed
the GWIN entries on the following page from the
16 Oct 1850 U.S.
Census
of Macoupin County, Illinois,

This person is currently unknown to

that her husband, George, moved to

This is the William Gwin (Jr.) whom
Mike Walker
has theorized could be the son of William and Susanna Gwin (and
grandson
of Isham and Mary C. Gwin) as explained above. His estimated year of
birth,
1812, is the same year John Gwin and Jane Walker married and the year
before
William and Susanna joined the Miller's Cove Baptist Church (see
item #3 above). Based on the places of birth of these Gwin children
of William and Jane in this very census, these Gwins were living in
Alabama
in 1833 and in Illinois by 1837. |

Jane evidently married William in the
early 1830's,
no doubt in Alabama. If Rebecca is their firstborn, Jane would've been
about 20 when Rebecca was born and therefore about 19 when she and
William
married (ca. 1832). |

Redfield Herald --
November 1906
- February 1907
Bourbon County's Redfield Herald
was a
weekly newspaper. The first issue, dated April 8, 1905, was published
on
Saturdays, with W. E. Stockmyer [referred to as Edd], as Editor. In
October
1905, when Mr. and Mrs. Stockmyer left Kansas for New Mexico,
publication
changed from Saturdays to Fridays and J. Frank Pool replaced Mr.
Stockmyer
as Editor. At that point, the paper was considerably expanded; in
addition
to community news, coverage also included courthouse news and property
transfers/deeds. Another editorial change occurred in October 1906 when
Mr. Pool retired and Harry E. Luman became Editor. These extracts have
been copied as accurately as possible, but errors may still occur.
Minor
printing errors have been corrected, but otherwise the information is
presented
as it originally appeared. Please consult the individual reel to verify
an item. I do not have any further information about these individuals
or families. Contributed by Ellen Knowles Bisson

The Kansas Heritage Server would like to thank Darlene
(DarleneA@aol.com)
for contributing this material.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have learned that my great-great grandfather, James
W. Gwin, had a schoolhouse named after him in the Godfrey
neighborhood
of Bourbon Co., near Ft. Scott. I assume it was of the one-room variety
but have been unable to get info on it as yet. It was said to be built
on the old family homestead in Godfrey. If anyone has any info on this,
please submit not only to me, but to Lynn and Rene too. Someone on one
of the KS lists suggested I write to the Superintendent of Schools for
Bourbon Co. in Ft. Scott, but I have yet to do that. It is a
possibility
though.

John,
Yes, Francis Curtis was my great great grandfather and I have His
decendants information if you would like that. He and Ann gave
birth to Francis Edward Gwin who married Cora maude Stratton who
gave birth to Roy Elmer Gwin who married Gennevive Anna Brooks and my
dad is Francis Burdette Gwin and my mother was Mary Arlene
Mastin. My Mom died when I was 6 1/2 and my father remarried
Margaret Anne Widrig Treaster .
I am collecting information from cousins who come from Harry Newton
Gwin who was a son of Arthur and Mary Jane Gwin. I will have 11
pages from my cousin Shirley in Garnett, Kansas soon.
I am still trying to find Arthur Gwin's or Mary jane Porter's
parents. If you have any information about that could you please
send it to me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for emailing me!

I am the daughter of Boyd Bernard Gwin, youngest son of Merle Dennis
Gwin, grandson of Francis Edward Gwin, great-grandson of Francis Curtis
Gwin. You have none of Boyd's and his oldest brother Elmer's
geneology. May I fill you in? I knew many of the Gwins who were
Merle Dennis Gwin's siblings---after MANY trips to Washington and
Morrowville, Kansas. Have also been in contact with the family of
Harry Newton Gwin, another son of Francis Curtis and Ann
Somerville/Summervile.
I'm very interested in the early Pennsylvania history of Arthur Gwin
and wife Jane/Jana Porter.
I left this message in your
guest book---but thought I'd also send it to you this way.

Subject: Geneaology of the Gwin
family...
Dear Mr. Gwin:
I discovered your website as I was researching to fill in the Gwin
branches of my family tree. My gg grandfather was Alexander Gwin (b. Dec. 1849 in
Illinois - d. 1937 in Oklahoma) who married Harriet A. Givens (b. Aug. 1854 in
Berry's Lick, Butler, Kentucky - d.1940 in Oklahoma). According to the
1850 and 1860 Censuses, Alexander's father was John Gwin. My dilemma comes from
each census listing different places of birth. Same is true for his
wife Mary Gwin. The 1850
Census lists Tennessee as his place of birth and the 1860 Census lists
Alabama.
I felt a sense of hope that our Gwins are connected when I saw the 1850
Census image on your website. The 1850 Census that I have lists John
Gwin and Alexander Gwin (my ggg - gg grandfathers) on October 17, 1850
(the day after the census on your website) in MacOupin, Illinois. To
the best of my knowledge, John Gwin was born about 1824 in Tennessee
(or Alabama). Could my John Gwin be related to your William Gwin or
others? There seems to have been many Gwins in the MacOupin, Illinois
area.
Then I came across the table on your website that lists the Gwins on
the 1880 Census of Drywood, Bourbon, Kansas: my John Gwin was listed on
the 1860 Census of Drywood, Bourbon, Kansas with children Hulda,
William, Alexander, Arrena, Octavo and Orvil (Orril). Could #3 and #7
on that chart on your website be the same Arrena and Octavo (Octava)
that would be my gg aunts?
Alexander Gwin is found on the 1880 Census in Green, Lawrence, Missouri
with his wife, Harriet. Octava is listed under his name and as his
sister. I wonder if John Gwin died in Kansas.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you have on this Gwin family.
If you are interested, I will keep you informed on what I find in my
search. I am new to genealogy, so any advice is welcome! Many blessings
to you and your family...I enjoyed your website and will visit often!
Thank you in advance for any time you give to this search.
In Christ,

John,
I came upon your website pertaining to the Gwin's and need some help
placing these two guys. They were in William and Jane Gwin's
household in 1850 in Macoupin Co, IL. I'm attaching a family
sheet including documentation.
I would appreciate corresponding with you on these families. I
have corresponded with Darlene Almer but think I have a bit more actual
documentation.
I look forward to hearing from you.

At the bottom of the pages, it lists Raymond L. Streeter as the
producer; however, I'm doing this for him and his family. He is
the actual descendant of Elias Gwin.

James H. Guin was born in Macoupin county, Ill., on December 23, 1835,
and died at the home of his
daughter in Crawford county, Kan., June 16, 1910, at the age of 76
years 2 months, 21 days. He was
married to Eliza Mayberry October 1857. In 1861 he accepted Christ as
his savior and became a member
of the Methodist church, in which faith he continued until death. In
1866 he moved with his family to
Kansas and located six miles south of this city, where he has since
continued his residence. His life
companion was called to the better world a few years ago. He leaves
five children and several
grandchildren to mourn their loss. The funeral service was conducted
Sunday at 1 p.m. from the Pleasant
View school house by Rev. L. G. Wood of the Brethren church. James Guin
was well known throughout
the county and was highly respected by all who knew him, which was
evidenced by the large concourse
of sympathizing friends who attended the funeral. He was a loyal
citizen, a good neighbor, a kind father
and a devoted Christian. May these characteristics be held in sacred
memory to help and bless the living.
His last request was that his grandsons act as pallbearers and bear his
body to its resting place, which
request was carried out in full, and interment was made at Pleasant
View cemetery by the side of his
companion.

______________________
Services Held Yesterday Afternoon
At 2 O'clock at Cheney Chapel
Burial in Evergreen
______________________
The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Meyer was held yesterday afternoon
at 2 o'clock from
the Cheney chapel, 119 South Main St. conducted by Rev. L. G. Wood, of
the Brethren
church.
Rev. Wood took his text from Psalms 23:1: "Yea, though I walk thru the
valley of the
shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and
thy staff they comfort
me."
A trio consisting of Mrs. Thurman Orr, Vern Dixon, and L. G. Wood sang
the songs,
"Beautiful Garden of Prayer."; "Where the Gates Swing Outward Never",
and "I Need Thee
Every Hour."
Among the many floral offerings was a beautiful double spray of snap
dragons inscribed
"Mother".
Interment was made in the family lot in the Evergreen cemetery. The
pall bearers were W.
F. Farris, C. C. Packer, C. A. Culp, Geo. Hare, Charles M. Grimes and
G. R. Hughes.
The services were largely attended.

**Note by Darlene Dobbins Almer, Great Granddaughter of Elizabeth
Meyers - Notably
absent from this obituary are the children of daughter, Blanche Fetters
- Claude, Cleota, Opal
and Louise (my Mother, Cleota, and her siblings). I don't know who
provided information
for the newspaper but for whatever reason, they left out these
Grandchildren as survivors.
They apparently had already been sent to Oklahoma to the Brown
household (relatives by
marriage to the Gwin family).

SCOTT FELL DEAD
_________________________
Death Came Very Suddenly to Wm. E.
Scott This Morning, Just After He
Had Been Shaved
__________________________
Death came very suddenly this morning to William E. Scott, as the
result of heart failure,
just after Joe Long, a barber at the Sam Rudkin shop, had finished
shaving him. Although
he appeared indisposed this morning, nobody suspected his condition was
serious,
especially in view of the fact that he laughed and joked with those in
the barber shop. He
carried on a conversation with Joe Long while the latter was shaving
him, and seemed to be
in fairly good spirits. Just after Long had finished shaving him and
was powdering his face,
Mr. Scott commenced to slip from the barber chair. Mr. Long and others
present saw he
had suffered some kind of a stroke, and succeeded in preventing him
from coming to the
floor heavily. The extremities became cold within a very brief space of
time. It is thought
Mr. Scott was dead by the time he struck the floor.
Dr. E. B. Payne was called immediately and it took but a short time to
determine that
Mr. Scott was dead. The Cheney pulmotor was called just after Mr. Scott
had suffered the
stroke and although it was brought at once and immediately put into
use, it had no effect.
Mr. Scott, who was a man of 47 years of age, had been a resident of
this county for
many years, having for the greater part of the time made his home in
Godfrey and that
neighborhood. He removed to this city from Godfrey about three years
ago and took charge
of the restaurant at No. 9 Market street, which he has since conducted.
The deceased is survived by a wife, Mrs. Cora Scott, and three
daughters, Ida, Ina, and
Iva.
Mr. Scott had always been in good health until about two weeks ago,
when he became
indisposed, probably as the result of over work. He was a man who would
persist in
working as long as there was any task to be performed, and this fact
might have had

something to do with the fatal stroke which he suffered this morning.
About two weeks ago, Mr. Scott became indisposed, and his wife and
daughters, who
had been helping him at the restaurant, tried to prevail upon him not
to work at nights, as
had been his practice. During the past few days, his condition seeming
to be worse, he had
finally been induced to quit working for several nights and he had not
worked since Monday
night. Last night he told his daughters he felt considerably better and
he insisted on working
all night. However, his daughters would not allow him to do so, and so
he finally retired,
with the promise that he would be sure to be down to the restaurant
today to help them
through the dinner hour.
True to his promise, Mr. Scott came down town this morning and was
preparing for the
days work. He told the barbers at the Rudkin shop that he was feeling
considerably better
today than he had for several days and this was borne out by the fact
that he laughed and
joked as usual.
Mr. Scott, according to the statement of a physician who had been
attending him, had
been afflicted with heart trouble for more than a year. The physician
said this morning that
when he examined Mr. Scott about a year ago, he found that his heart
was missing about
every third beat. He advised him not to work at nights.
The funeral of Mr. Scott will be held tomorrow afternoon at three
o'clock from the
Christian church. Rev. W. Y. Allen officiating, and interment will be
in Evergreen cemetery.
The services will be in charge of the M. W. A. of which the deceased
had for a long time
been a member. The pall bearers will be chosen from among the members
of the three
lodges to which the deceased belonged, the M. W. A., Red Men, and
Knights and Ladies of
Security.
