Bulletin, July 25, 1999--This just in from another Rhodes descendant, Mary Jo Dearing: She has found Emmett M. Rhodes in the 1880 census of Jackson County, WV (next county over to the west from Roane) listed as age 8, along with his siblings, parents, and paternal grandparents. A quick call to Dorothy Stalnaker substantiated several pieces of the information (Emmett's birth year and a sibling's name), leading me to believe that it is in fact the same family! I am now in the process of entering these data onto this page. What fun! :-)

I have...an 1880 Jackson county census record here that lists Emmett M....age 8. Father is Isaiah and mother is Manda J. with children Agnes, Manuel, Cordelia,Mary A., Ezra,Bennett and Alfred C. If you have Emmett as having first child in 1890, he would be about 18...possibly the one you're looking for.

...it has W014 beside the family...is another family on this page with same no.
...Alexander age 74 and Mahala age 69, so could possibly be Isaiah's parents...

re... the code numbers... the W is for the location...the other no. is household no., so I would definitely say that the Isaiah and Alexander are related.

This is Sharon's maternal grandmother's side of the family.   The resident historian for this branch of the clan is Mabel Starcher Chapman, Sharon's first cousin once removed, whom I met at a reunion at Mabel's home in Ripley, West Virginia, the summer of 1994 and who still lives there.    Most of this information so far, however, comes from another of Sharon's first cousins once removed, Dorothy Raines Stalnaker of Dunbar, WV, in Nov 1996 and following, and from the families themselves.  I'm attempting to list here the generations before and since Emmett M. Rhodes.

*1.-- Mr. Rhodes b. abt 1702 d. abt 1735
          He (first name unknown) lived among the foothills of VA with his wife and 3 children many years before
          1738. He was tomahawked and scalped inhis doorway about 1735 during an Indian uprising.   His wife and
          daughter were carried into captivity with other women and children; his sons hid in bushes and escaped
          to a fort. The women were killed because they couldn't keep up with the Indians' flight across the
          mountains, but a chief took a fancy to the daughter and adopted her.

     *2.2--  Christopher Rhodes, Sr. b. abt 1724; d. abt 1839 Christopher escaped the Indians (see above), married,
                and settled in Rockbridge Co VA with his family. A widely known marksman and hunter, he lived to
                be 115.   When Christopher was over 100 he won a Christmas shooting match, sitting in his doorway
                and steadying his long rifle against the doorface.   (This is probably Sue Moore's Christian Rhodes
                b. abt 1730 d. aft 1830 in Botetourt Co VA; hunter, Indian fighter, married several times)
