Who is John Edward Flynn?
 This portrait of Susan Watson Flynn, my
gg-grandmother, sat for years in the living room of my parents' home in
West Virginia on the old marble-topped wash stand owned and used all
her married life by her daughter, Julia Ann Flynn Vardaman.
Pencilled on the mat in the hand of my grandmother, Adrian Belle "Adabelle" Vardaman Gwin, one can read "Grandmother '95". The old Vardaman family Bible states that Susan died in 1902 at the age of 95, making her birth year 1807. If this photo were taken in 1895, then, her age in the picture is 88. (I think she looks a lot younger than that, but who knows?) |

sat beside it (see above).
Great-grandma Julia and I share birthdays! We were both born 29 Oct,
she exactly 107 years older than I. My dad knew her well, and since he was a writer by
profession, his works often included some very
interesting anecdotes
and stories about living with her in his early years.

took this photo of him, left, myself when I visited their home in 2004. We had an excellent visit that evening, and they put me up for the night before I headed back to Las Cruces the next morning. Susan Watson of
Georgia married Benjamin Anderson
Flynn
in Coweta Co., GA, on 6 Jul 1831. They lived in Randolph Co.,
AL.
Their son Elijah Elbert Flynn moved to northern Louisiana and,
with
his wife Rebekkah F. Davis Flynn, raised two sons, one of whom
died
young, the tombstone of the other of whom, John William Flynn,
appears below.
