1. My father's oldest brother, James Bassett Gwin II, had an interest in researching and preserving genealogical information on his--our--family. A year or so before he died, Uncle James rode the bus from his home in Metarie, Louisiana, to ours here in Las Cruces, New Mexico, to visit us and take care of the "preserving" part, having chosen me as custodian of his work. I accepted that responsibility, and while I'm not yet the researcher he was, I can at least protect his papers and make the fruit of his effort available to others. I started this page June 1, 1999, planning to add to it as I could and as I learned more--as indeed I already have--from people like you! Uncle James' statement: "These records collected and compiled in the year 1949 [and following] by James Bassett Gwin II, 2918 45th Street, New Orleans, zone 20, Louisiana, from information submitted by members of all families herein recorded."

Ancestry.com mistranscribed this as
Geoyn, and I can see why. The enumerator wrote "Gwyn", but when he
wrote the "w", the tops of his 2nd and 3rd upstrokes joined, making it
look more like an undotted i and an o, and the transcriber saw it as
"eo". William is my gg-grandpa. |

This
is Isham Griffin Gwin, William's son, listed here as a "steam

From this listing, one might think that he was an engineer (operator)
of a steam locomotive on the railroad, and that is entirely possible.
Another possiblity, however, is that he was in charge of the
steam-driven saws in his father's lumber mill. |

I
earlier had questioned the parentage of this son Thomas because I had
mistranscribed his
father's report to the enumerator as Thomas' being born in "Louisiana"
and his mother being born
"at sea", and I had listed my error here, suggesting that he might thus
have been "adopted". A Dec 2008 letter from the wife, Mrs. Judy
Lochridge, of one of Thomas' descendants, however, challenged that
suggestion, and I looked again at the original listing in the 1920
census and realized and corrected my error. The listings for Thomas'
parents' birthplaces are clearly Alabama and Louisiana, respectively. Thanks, Judy, for
catching and helping me correct my error! :-) A
positive result of that erroneous listing is that Judy has now provided
me with some additional data on Thomas' descendants, which I have added to the family outline above,
listing it in this
green color. |

John,
Thank you for sending the pictures. It is wonderful that you were able to acquire them. My wife is the daughter of John William HAM and Dorothy MACKLIN. Her name is Lois Gail. She was born 11 SEP 1947 in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. John William HAM was the son of William Russell HAM and Mary Alice LOCHRIDGE. We have no photogaphs of her father's family and only one of her father. John and Dorothy divorced in 1950, when Gail was 3 years old.
Sincerely,
Mark Hall
John,
You are welcome for what I sent
you. I think your
website is wonderful.
I noticed that someone sent you
information that Robert Guy
LOCKRIDGE
was married to Mary E. on the 1860 Callaway County, MO census.
I don't think this is his
wife. I believe he is living with his
sister
Mary
E. and brother James A. LOCKRIDGE
They are living next door to their
sister Martha Jane, who
married
James
Washington DOUGLASS.
These same siblings were on
the 1850 Callaway County census
in two different
households: Martha, James, and Robert were
living
in the household of John & Elizabeth PEYTON while Mary
and another brother William were living with John and
Margaret
CALLISON.
There were also two older
siblings named John and Nancy
who were born in the late 1820s; I haven't found them on any
census.
Their parents must have died
sometime in the 1840s. I think
this
is the family of John LOCKRIDGE and his wife Mahala BROWN.
They were enumerated on page 14 of the 1840 Audrain County, MO, census.
This Lockridge family is mentioned
on page 402 in a book titled A
History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri by William S. Bryan
and Robert Rose and published in 1876 by Bryan, Brand & Co., St.
Louis,
MO. I have no proof of this yet but I am still searching.
Sincerely,
Mark
P.S. Robert Guy
LOCKRIDGE must have moved to
Alabama about
1862 or 1863 because he enlisted in Company D 8th Alabama Infantry
CSA
in
April 1863. He drew a pension for his service and was
on the
1921 Census of Confederate Soldiers in Alabama.

Hello John,
Thanks for writing.
Let me comment on a couple things.
Lokrig is a name we dreamed up to
include the various spellings that
have evolved, from the Scot Lochridge to the Irish Loughridge to the
Americanized
Lockridge, and other variations.
The Lockridge family were pioneers
(1740's) in western Virginia in
Augusta
County, and allied families with numerous intermarriages between them,
were Kincaid, Gwin, Gay, Carlisle, Graham, and
others.
From Augusta Co., members of these families were early in Montgomery
Co.,
KY and then as the country opened, went on west.
I don't have any more on the
Wilsons. I should have, as
my Lokrig line apparently came from Ireland carrying some kind of
Wilson
memory as the name Wilson shows up as the middle name of members of my
Lokrig family.
I hope you have been able to
contact Arthur G Lochridge.
I seem to remember that Robert
Lochridge, after the Civil War,
left
MO and settled in AL where his wife's father or other close relation
operated
some kind of factory, and Robert entered employment there using his
family
"in."
[JMG Note: this is likely William
Gwin's sawmill in Wilsonville.]
I have a file on Gwin which is one
of the our VA, Augusta allied
family
files. Several pages of the History of the Gwin Family
by Jesse Blaine Gwin are there which tells of the migration of
the
Gwin family from Wales to North Carolina in the early 1700's and then
to
Augusta Co, VA: "Robert Gwinn, moved from North Carolina to
Highland or Augusta Co., VA sometime before 1745 and became an Indiana
fighter and a Rev. War hero." Also have Augusta Gwin data from early
area historians Cleek and Chalkley. There was so many
Gwins
in Augusta, I am surprised there were any left in Carolina.
Thanks for responding.
"Joe" from Idaho
[However, Lloyd D. Laughridge, jopoho@juno.com reports, "We finally discovered that Robert, one of the missing boys, showed up in AL after being enumerated in the 1860 Callaway Co., MO., census, aged 22 with wife Mary A E aged 20 {Mark Hall reports that he believes this MAE is Robert's SISTER, age 20, not his wife; and this would explain everything--see the following questions that can't seem to be answered if this MAE is his wife but are easily answered if she is a sister}. Robert's family came to MO from KY and before that were of the Augusta Co., VA family where Gwin and Gay/Guy were allied families. In the 1880 Shelby AL census, a Texana Wilson 25 is part of the family household and your (i.e., mine--John M. Gwin's) entry explains that."] There are discrepancies, then, in Mary Ann's birth year (1843 or 1840?) and their marriage year (1866 or 1860--or earlier). Several questions arise. How did they meet? Did Robert go to Alabama and meet (and marry?) her there, return to MO so she could meet his parents, then return to AL where they show up in 1880 in the census? Or was Mary Ann for some reason in Missouri where they met and married, then she brought him home to meet her parents and they stayed? If the Lloyd's 1860 census story and James' year for her birth are right, then she would have been married at/around age 17, not 23.
And my cousin Jack Vardaman told me today (1 Dec 2001) that he found that this same Robert Guy Lochridge is buried in/near Sylacauga, AL, next to his (RGL's) wife, Amanda; this is not surprising, however, if Uncle James' above date of death for Mary Ann Elizabeth is correct, as Robert could easily have remarried this Amanda and lived with her another 20-30 years. [Sure enough, in Jan 2002, Jack Vardaman and I indeed found his grave at the Hill Family Cemetery in Talladega Co., AL (from Sylacauga, take Co. Rd. 8 toward Fayetteville, turning right on Co. Rd. 34 about three miles after crossing US 231 in Sylacauga--the cemetery is atop the first hill a few hundred feet up Rt. 34 on the right). His stone reads: Robert G. Lochridge, b. 2 Feb 1838, d. 15 Jun 1926; her stone reads: Amanda, wife of R. G. Lochridge, b. 16 May 1848, d. 1 Jul 1916; buried next to them are two children, the first of whose stones reads, James I. Lochridge, b. 27 Apr 1874, d. 2 Oct 1957; the second reads, May Lochridge, b. 12 May 1887, d. 5 Jun 1976. James I. Lochridge, then, is clearly the same as the 6.3 below and the third child of Mary Ann Elizabeth Gwin, while May Lochridge is the daughter of Robert and Amanda and not related to me.]
Letters from Dr. Arthur
Lochridge:
No. 5 Laxcats to face No. 4 BYU in televised
matchup
By James Kelley
Arizona Daily Wildcat --- Friday
March 7, 2003
Not only does the men’s lacrosse
team get to travel to No. 4 Brigham
Young, they also face No. 8 Colorado and rising Utah in a series of
road
games so big, they will even have a game televised.
This weekend, the No. 5 Laxcats (5-1, 3-0) embark on their first
road
trip of the season, facing unranked Utah tonight before going to Provo
to battle No. 4 BYU on Saturday. UA then takes on No. 8 Colorado on
Sunday,
at BYU as well.
Head coach Adam Hopkins feels that this is not only the toughest
road
trip Arizona has embarked on during his time here, one year as an
assistant
and a second as head coach, but it is his most difficult road trip
ever.
"Well, we're playing the No. 4 team in the country and the No. 8
team
on TV and in front of a lot of fans, so it's big," Hopkins said. "It
will
also be pretty hard staying up after the emotional high of playing the
No. 4 team."
Utah is coming off a 23-8 win at Boise State. BYU is coming off a
sweep
over Tennessee, No. 7 Texas A&M and the No. 10 Longhorns, all in
Texas.
Colorado enters play after defeating No. 25 Illinois.
All three Laxcat opponents are Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate
Lacrosse
League teams, against which UA is 1-1 this season. Previously, Arizona
lost to then No. 2 Colorado State, 6-5, and beat Fort Lewis, 15-0.
Hopkins feels that BYU is better than CSU, which the UA had a chance
to tie in the closing seconds, but ended up falling to while playing
with
injured midfielder Bryan Moore and without attackman Josh Morrison.
BYU plays Colorado on Friday.
On top of the big match-ups Arizona is playing in, No. 1 Sonoma
State
hosts No. 2 UC Santa Barbara, which UA will play next weekend.
The cold Utah weather should not be a factor, goalie Sean Koffel
said.
"If you're a better team then you're a better team," Koffel said.
"We
are just excited to go on a big road trip, to be on TV, and to let the
people watch us come and beat their team."
For the injury-laden Laxcats, attackmen Tom Ghaney and Moore will
play,
but Morrison and midfielder Scott Black won't.
The BYU game, which is one of only five Cougar games on television,
is on at 7 p.m. on Saturday and at 11 p.m. on the local Provo PBS
affiliate,
channel 11, KBYU-TV.
BYUTV is available on the internet at byutv.org/streaming.
The game is also available on select cable, Dish Network and
DirectTV
packages. For more information go to byutv.org/getbyutv.
This will be the first time the Laxcats have been on television
during
the career of senior attackman Tom Ghaney, whose parent's are making
special
arrangements for the game.
"Oh yeah, they're pretty excited," Ghaney said.

Laxcat senior Lochridge emerges as team leader
When the UA men’s club lacrosse team dropped seven of its last nine games in 2003, the cliques that had formed the team’s foundation began to conflict and unravel, sending the team into disarray.
“We had bad team chemistry,” said then-junior attackman Jeems Lochridge, who led the team with 4.24 points per game last season. “Everyone yelled and got down on one another. There was fighting and bickering between players, between coaches and players.”
Summer brought a changing of the guard. Head coach Adam Hopkins’ departure opened the door for assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Kenny Broschart to step up and assume command. The seniors also went their separate ways, leaving Arizona’s new team captains — senior defenseman Tom Wiley, junior defenseman Dan Young and Lochridge — to tend to a young but potent roster in 2004.
It’s a challenge that Lochridge, nicknamed “The Boy” by teammates, welcomed.
“I knew we had a lot of new guys coming in,” he said. “Being a new guy myself, I saw a lot of things I liked and things I didn’t like. I didn’t like the attitude, guys trying to bully you around, thinking they’re better than you just because they’re older, you know? So I treat everyone really as equal. I give them respect.
“Our team is like a family. You need to respect your family.”
Broschart instituted a number of changes during the offseason, including Lochridge’s move from attack to midfield, mostly to capitalize on the senior’s playmaking abilities.
“He is one of the most dominant players on our team,” Broschart said. “Last year, he led the team with 70 points and was one of the best players we had. We moved him this year, and he is really playing well.”
Lochridge, a business administration and finance senior, continues to take a controlled approach to his game.
“I try to do everything textbook; do the little things that, when not done, turn into bad habits,” he said. “I’m trying to be a role model, to do things fundamentally so some of the younger kids who don’t have much experience can see and learn.”
His fellow midfielders, including freshman Harrison Crawford, are quick to extol Lochridge’s demonstrative nature.
“He just gives 100 percent,” Crawford said. “Every day in practice, he’s there, and in whatever he does, he goes all out. Him being on my line motivates me to play better.”
Lochridge has let his offense take a backseat this season, in favor of letting sophomore attackmen Adam Paris and Greg Polheber light up the goal. Both rank in the top 10 of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League’s point standings.
Despite his efforts, Lochridge, who was third on the team in scoring through last week, remains just one of the guys.
“He’s not a leader and he’s not really a big brother, either,” Paris said. “He’s just a very good player who just wants to go out and play well.
“He’s the catalyst of our team. He gets going, and then everyone else gets going.”
Still, “The Boy” doesn’t quite consider himself “The Man.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s my team at all,” said Lochridge. “I wouldn’t say it’s anyone’s team. I start the offense, get it going like the quarterback, but it’s not my team at all. Everyone’s part of the team, and it belongs to them.”
With the team’s newfound collectiveness, Lochridge hopes 2004 turns out how 2003 never did — with a berth in the United States Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates national title game May 12 in St. Louis, Mo.
“We don’t have the talent we’ve had in other years,” he said, “but I’ve been having the most fun out of any of (my four) years. Other years, it was just a bunch of individuals. Being close-knit and getting to know each of the guys is better than having two or three friends on the team.
“I want to be in St. Louis, with my team
there, receiving the
championship
trophy.”
