About the time Isham Gwin (and his neighbor, Kinsey Veatch) disappear from the Baptist church records in Crowson's Cove, Sevier County, Tennessee, an Isham Gwin (and his neighbor, Kinsey Veatch) appear in Crawford County and Orange County, Indiana, again involved in Baptist church work. We now believe these Ishams to be one and the same person.

A David Denton bought land from Susanna Richardson in Crowson's Cove, Sevier County, Tennessee. Witness to the transaction was a William Gwin, whom I believe was probably a brother to Elizabeth Gwin Denton (David's wife and Isham's daughter) and John Gwin (my ggg-grandfather). 3375 iii. Isom DENTON was born in 1808 in TN. He died in Sep 1888 in Blue River Twp., Harrison CO, IN.	Isom must have been named for his grandfather Isham Gwin, Elizabeth's father, who owned 249 acres of land in Crowson's Cove, Sevier Co., TN, in 1807,

"I am descended from Isham Guinn/Isom Gwin who was a Baptist preacher at Tuckaleeche Cove, Blount Co., TN about 1809 and at Sevier Co., TN around 1810. He later was a Minister of the Gospel in Harrison and Crawford and Orange? counties. He was preacher at El Bethel Baptist Church, Crawford Co., Indiana until 1817 and at Providence Baptist Church in Crawford/Orange, In., until his death around 1830. He was listed in a book listing Baptist preachers, printed in Boston, MA in 1811.

Greenfield Township, Section 26 - T1S R1W

The Providence Cemetery is located in Greenfield Township near the Providence Baptist Church in the community known as Fargo, this being about 12 miles south of Paoli, and 2 miles west off of State Route 37. From the history of Orange County, Goodspeed 1884: "Providence Baptist Church, at Pittsburg, in the southern part of Greenfield Township, is said to have been organized as early as 1819, in what is now Crawford County, at the house of Robert Sands, although there is some doubt as to the date. Prior to 1880, when the present church was built, there had been in their turn a round and a hewed log-house and a frame that served each a period of usefullness and then abandoned." Note: The first two buildings were on the grounds where the cemetery is located. The cemetery and building are now separated by a few hundred yards.

The Presbytery, composed of Brothers Isom Gwin and Kinsey Veatch, met at the home of Robert Sands in Crawford County, Indiana. After being constituted, 21 chartered members took their seats and gave themselves the name of Providence. The church appointed Brother Robert Sands to write a letter to the Blue River Association and Brother Samuel McMahan, Brother Robert Yates and Brother Robert Sands to bear the letter and sue for admittance therein. The church agreed to call Brother Isom Gwin as pastor and sent a request to El Bethel to give him a week for that purpose and sent Brother John Lee, Sr to bear the request.

The Church chose Brother Gwin as moderator and took into consideration the business of choosing deacons. The church agreed to commune three times a year.

6 April 1820

The Church chose Brother Robert Sands as Deacon and Brother Walter Alexander as their writing clerk. In August of the same year Brothers John Davis and Cornelius Newkirk were messengers to the Association. In September they agreed to grant Brother John Davis liberty to exercise his gift in the bounds of the Church and in the bounds of the Sister Churches with his laboring brethern.

August 1827

Providence Church called on her trustees to make a report on what progress they had made in building a meeting house. They reported that they have the house built to the square by choosing the male members in four classes and they agreed to go on in the same until they have the house covered in. This first building was built of logs and was also used as a school house. Amos Critchfield taught school here in 1830.

Crawford County was formed from Harrison County and Perry County in 1818. The act was passed January 29, 1818, to go into effect March 1, 1818. Originally, Crawford County had 4 townships. Over time it was subdivided into our present 9 townships.

The first courthouse for Crawford County was located at Mt. Sterling in a log structure. In 1821 the court moved to a new two story brick building built by Allen Thom at Fredonia. In 1843, the court moved to Leavenworth, and it stayed there until 1896, when it was moved to English.

The first town in Crawford County was Leavenworth in 1818, or some say as early as 1809. Fredonia was started in 1818-1820. Milltown was started by Zeb and Seth Leavenworth when they built a mill on the banks of Blue River about 1826. Gaithers Wood Pile or Nebraska, now called Alton, was started in 1838. Marengo was started in 1838, and Springtown, or old Marengo, had settlers by 1825. English was platted about 1838.

The first settlers in what is now Crawford County were Thomas Stroud, the Spencers, the Peckinpaughs, the Wisemans, and the Haskins, just to name a few.

The forests of Crawford County were the main source of income for many families. Ties, staves, hoop poles and lumber were farmed in great number and sold mainly in the early years at the port at Leavenworth. The forest also provided mast to feed your hogs. People from Orange, Dubois and Martin Counties would have hog drives through Crawford. The hogs would get fat off of the mash and would then be killed, processed and shipped at Leavenworth.

Early manufacturers in Crawford were Pekinpaugh & Harrison at Alton, which made furniture, among other things. R.D. Tucker and David Suddarth were gun makers in Crawford County. Carding mills, tanneries and sawmills began to spring up, and by 1871 over 21 sawmills were working in the timber.

During the period of 1865-1875 Leavenworth was booming because of the building of flatboats. Flatboats were built to haul hay, barrels of lime, pork, apples, cabbage, potatoes, and onions to southern markets.

The railroad opened up the northern part of the county when it was finished in 1882. New towns sprang up, like Taswell, Eckerty, Riceville, and Temple. The railroad was also a boom for older towns like Milltown, Marengo, and English.

Because of soil erosion, farming was on a downward spiral in the 1800's. People started leaving in large numbers after the soil and forest were depleted, and the economics of Crawford waned downward.

Knob Creek Church was one of the churches which organized the Blue River Association in 1816. Messengers from Knob Creek Church at that time were Elder Thomas Acres and Bro. Frederick Leatherman, who reported 17 members.

El Bethel Church (or, Whisky Run, as it was first called) was one of the churches which organized the Blue River Association in October 1816. Elder Kinsey Veach and Bro. Jacob Keith were the first messengers, who reported 38 members. Elders Isom Gwin and William Noblitt were also members of this church.

Since Isham and Mary CANTERBURY's marriage is established at 25 Jan 1787 in Montgomery Co., VA, and Polly's DOB is (probably) the same year, the most likely scenario is that Isham never married a Cleveland, this name having been recalled in error by the person quoted in The Compendium of American Genealogy, either John Gwin or his daughter Sarah Gwin Basset. Regardless, I would certainly like to see the source of this list of children!]

Note from Jim Wall: Note that Mary Gwynn, age 80, born Virginia, is blind. Also, note Isom Denton (named for his grandfather? Isom Gwin)-- this Isom Denton died during the Civil War about 30 days after being drafted. He is buried in National Cemetery in Indianapolis.

The Presbytery, composed of BrothersIsom Gwin and Kinsey Veatch, met at the home of Robert Sands in Crawford County, Indiana. After being constituted, 21 chartered members took their seats and gave themselves the name of Providence. The church appointed Brother Robert Sands to write a letter to the Blue River Association and Brother Samuel McMahan, Brother Robert Yates and Brother Robert Sands to bear the letter and sue for admittance therein. The church agreed to call Brother Isom Gwin as pastor and sent a request to El Bethel to give him a week for that purpose and sent Brother John Lee, Sr. to bear the request.

Isum Gwin was born 17 October 1826 in Harrison County, Indiana. His parents, Holmes and Mary Gwin, came to Indiana from Virginia before 1809.

Thomas Gwin and his brother John Gwin came to begat Holmes who begat Isum
 

Isum Gwin eventually moved to Alfordsville in Daviess County, where he was a farmer. In 1862 he became a trustee of Rutherford Township in Martin County.
Gwin volunteered for the Union army 9 August 1862, joining the 80th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, Company D. He had a distinguished service record, rising in rank from first sergeant in September 1862, second lieutenant in January 1863, first lieutenant in February 1864, and finally captain on 1 July 1864. Isum mustered out of the army 22 June 1865 in North Carolina.Ý
Gwin married Louiza Mosier on 25 December 1870. He died on 4 April 1907 in Shoals, Indiana, and is buried in the South Martin Cemetery in Rutherford Township of Martin County, Indiana.ÝÝ

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection is comprised of Isum Gwinís Civil War diary, and a transcription of the diary. There are also photo copies of his death announcement, a list of voters in the 1809 Harrison County Territorial Election, and a letter to his parents from 4 July 1864.
The diary begins 24 February 1864 and ends on 16 December 1864. The entries discuss life in camp, Isumís experiences on picket duty, and the different places that his regiment went. Also included in the diary are lists of expenses, the amount of money that he sent home to his parents, and supplies issued to his men. Gwin spent much of this time marching through Georgia, engaging in several skirmishes near Kennesaw Mountain, Decatur, and the Etowah River. The diary also discusses the men who were wounded and killed. The transcription of the diary begins with the 26 April entry.
The 4 July 1864 letter to his parents discusses the view from Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia and the rebel troop movements.

I believe that Josiah is the descendant of one of the Gwins of Harrison County, descended from George Holmes Gwin of Pittslyvania County, Virginia.Ý He is the person whom I found described as "a reformed liar, alcoholic, embezzler, etc." in a broadside in the New Albany-Floyd County, Indiana Library.Ý I believe that he edited a local paper in New Albany, and held a position in the New Albany government.

GUINN, VARNELL
John B. Guinn married Sarah Varnell on Nov. 25, 1807. They had 6 children Matilda, Sarah, Covington, Mary Ann b. 1813, Charles Tellis b. July 4, 1821, and John(Jesse) Pierce b. Dec.24, 1825. All of the children were born in Sevier Co. as far as I know. I believe John's father to be either Isham Guinn or Charles Guinn. They were both in the area during the early 1800';s. Any help would be very much appreciated.

John, I find the name Pierce to be of interest.Ý I believe that there were a Pierce and a Bartlett Guinn who are related somehow to George Holmes Guinn.Ý Yesterday at the Family History Center, I found a number of land transactions involving George Holmes Gwin/Guinn, Holms Guinn and Richard Guinn.Ý They were in Goochland and Albemarle counties.Ý I believe that the Guinns were in those counties before moving south to Pittsylvania, Lunenburg and Halifax counties.

Did you see the information on Isum Gwin of Martin County, Indiana-- hisÝfather, Holmes(sp?) Gwin being from Virginia.Ý I am sure that I saw him listed in the will of George Holmes Gwin, Pittsylvania County, Virginia about 1793.Ý Somebody joined the DAR based on George Holmes Gwin providing beef? to the army during the Revolutionary War.Ý However, I also ran across something about him being indicted for harboring a deserter, one of his sons who was dodging military service.

John, I am providing you a transcription of the will of Isom Gwin and the settlement of his estate about 25 years later, after the death of his wife. Two of my ancestors collected shares ofÝ the estate for money due their wives: David Denton, who married Elizabeth Gwin; and Benjamin Weathers, who married second Mrs. Jane Gwin Tipton.

One of the heirs was named Childers--that is interesting to me, because in Virginia one of the Gwins who was probably married to a relation of George Holmes Gwin married a Childress.ÝIn Martin County, Indiana, Isum Gwin married a Chattin--I believe that Gwins and Chattins married in Virginia.

It appears that there were 9 heirs.Ý There were only two sons listed I. [Isom] and Richard W. Gwin; there was not William Gwin shown.ÝUnfortunately,Ý the daughters names are not clearly stated.ÝI. Gwin was Isom Gwin [Junior]-- I think he may have left Indiana for Illinois. I found Richard W. Gwin living in Iowa and Kansas later on.

Orange Probate Court, January Term for 1831:

Benjamin Ratcliff produced in open Court the last will and testament of Isom Gwin of which probate was made by the Reuben Whitt(en) one of the subscribing witnefses, ordered that the said will be recorded and that Benjamin Ratcliffe one of the executors named therein file bond in the Clerks office with a penalty of one thousand Dollars with Samuel Stallcup as his security and that he otherwise qualify to as as executor according to law.

In the name of God Amen, I Isom Gwinn of the County of Orange and State of Indiana, being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory {for which I thank God} and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, and being desirous  to dispose of all such worldly estate as it has pleased God to blefs me with I give and bequeath the same in manner following that is to say
1st I give to my wife Mary Gwin all my estate both real and personal for and during the term of her natural life, except such as heretofore been provided for our maintenance and suport

John, I am providing you a copy of the DEATH RETURN of Allen Denton, age 79, filed 22 Dec 1883.ÝIt indicates that his father was David Denton and that his mother was a Gwin.ÝIt also indicates that Allen was born in Tennessee. The 1860 Census showed Allen Denton, age 56 years, birthplace E. [East] Tennessee, living in Stampers Creek Township, Orange County, Indiana. The DEATH RETURN indicated the father's and mother's birthplace was unknown.ÝHowever, the 1850 Census for Southeast Township, Orange County, Indiana shows that David Denton, age 72 [born ca. 1778], was born in Virginia; his wife Elizabeth [Gwin] Denton, age 63 [born ca. 1787] was born in Tennessee.ÝSince Tennessee was not established until 1796, I guess she was born in North Carolina, in that part which became Tennessee. David and Elizabeth Denton, Allen's parents, lived in Dwelling House number 35.ÝLiving in dwelling number 33 was Manervy Right [Wright], age 39 years, born in Tennessee.ÝWas she the widow of Elijah Wright? I believe that she could have been one of the last children of Isom and Mary Canterberry Gwin.ÝHer Right children were: Ruth, 21 (I believe she married a Childress. JTW); Susan, 19; Benjamin, 14; Leander, 10; and Elijah, 5.Ý(I recall seeing these names in the settlement of Isom Gwin's estate in 1855. JTW) Also living in the house was Mary Gwyn, 80, born in Virginia, who could not read or write, and was blind.ÝWas this lady the widow of my ancestor (4ggf) Isom Gwin/Isham Guinn? I must note that there is a marriage between Isom Gwin and Mary Likens recorded 20 Oct 1819 in Crawford County, Indiana-- is this Isom Gwin, Senior or Junior? When Allen's brother Isom Denton married Elizabeth Lincoln in Harrison County, Indiana, Allen gave the consent of his father David Denton and the consent of Josiah Lincoln, Elizabeth's father, on 17 July 1826. The papers of Lucien Williams were filed in the Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky, after his death around 1952.ÝMr. Williams was preparing a genealogical book on the Weathers (and other) family, but died before he could complete it.ÝHe mentioned in the notes that Benjamin Weathers' second wife was Virginia Jane Tipton, whose father Isham? Gwynn was a Baptist preacher, and her mother was a Canterbury.ÝHe did not indicate the source of his information. What do you think? Jim

WILLIAM W. SNYDER, a progressive farmer and stock-raiser, residing on section 34, English River Township, was born in Monongalia County, Va., [JMG NOTE: Now WV.] March 14, 1831.ÝHe is the son of Jeremiah and Anna (Rich) Snyder, also natives of the Old Dominion, and the parents of twelve children, of which number nine are yet living; George and John are deceased; Abram is a resident of Greene County, Pa.; Rollo, deceased; Cassandra is the widow of George Hogg, who was killed in the army; Jeremiah, Jr., is farming in Lime Creek Township, this county; Jacob, a retired farmer, is residing in Iowa City; Colby is farming extensively in Johnson County, Iowa; Samuel, in Adair County; Elizabeth is the wife of George Figgins, a farmer of English River Township, and W. W., the subject of this sketch.

The father followed the occupation of a farmer in his native State until 1842, when, hearing of the opportunities offered in the far West, and believing it would be for the advantage of his large family of children, he concluded to emigrate.ÝHe first proceeded with his family to Wheeling, thence by boat to Keokuk,ÝIowa, and from there overland to English River Township.ÝHe entered 250 acres of land in sections 1 and 12, and commenced to open up a farm.ÝAs one of the pioneers of this county, he became well known by all old citizens, and was a man held in high favor.ÝAlthough not connected with any church, Mr. And Mrs. Snyder were strong believers in the divinity of Christ and took an interest in all Church work.ÝThe mother died in 1860 and the father in 1873.ÝBoth rest in the old Snyder Cemetery, near which stood the Snyder Chapel.ÝMany lessons of truth, charity and in-

tegrity were presented in the lives of these good old people.

The early life of the subjectÝof this sketch was passed on his fatherís farm and in attendance at the common schools until he reached the age of twenty, when he started out for himself, and began working for $8 per month.ÝOn the 9th of December, 1852, he was united in marriage with Miss Martha Gwin, a native of Menard County, Ill., born March 27, 1834, and the daughter of Richard and Nancy (Watkins) Gwin, the former a native of Tennessee and the latter of Kentucky.ÝThey were married in Indiana, whence they removed first to Illinois at an early day and thence emigrated to Iowa, settling in Des Moines County in 1836, thus being among the pioneers of the State.ÝThe father died Jan. 7, 1884, and the mother July 6, 1884, in Wilson County, Kan.ÝThey were well-known and useful citizens in the different localities in which they lived.

Mr. and Mrs. Snyder became the parents of five children: Ida, the wife of A. M. Turner, a farmer in Potter County, Dak; Charles F., pursuing the same vocation there also; Anna, the wife of S. A. Rodgers, a farmer of the same locality; Eva, at home, preparing herself for a teacher; Adella, at home.ÝMr. And Mrs. Snyder have given all of their children good school advantages, and all are members of the Missionary Baptist Church, thus comprising a devoted Christian family.

After the marriage of our subject, he continued to reside on the old homestead until 1869, when he purchased the farm where he now lives.ÝWhen he first took possession it had only a small frame house on it, in which the family lived and worked happily together until 1882.ÝThe old house was then moved back to give place to a more modern and convenient dwelling.ÝMr. and Mrs. Snyder are now in the evening of life, some of their children growing up around them and some leaving home to seek their fortunes in a new country, as did their parents before them.ÝThey have witnessed many and great changes.ÝTheir farm, which at the time of purchase was unimproved, is now under a high state of cultivation and one of the most valuable in the township.ÝThey have seen the building of the church upon the hillside and the school-house in the valley, and have taken an active part in all religious, temperance and public affairs.ÝDuring the past five years Mr. Snyder has turned his attention to the raising of high-grade stock, having on hand a number of superior Clydesdale horses, and a fine lot of Chester White hogs and Short-horn cattle.ÝPolitically, Mr. Snyder is a democrat, and has held various township offices.

Captain Isum GWIN was born 17 Oct1826 near Lanesville in Harrison Co., IN. He spent his childhood near his birthplace. In 1837 his parents, Holmes and Mary GWIN, moved near Haysville, Dubois Co. The family once again moved to Rutherford Township in Martin Co., where Isum resided until 1886. Isum married Sarah MOSIER on 8 Oct1857. Sarah died in an accident while making soap, her dress catching on fire and she being alone at the time in the cabin. Their son William was only two years old at the time. Leaving his son with his parents, Isum enlisted in D Co., 80th IN Vol. Inf. 9 Aug1862. Mustered out 22 Jun1865 at Salisbury N.C. Shortly after returning home he again faced sadness with the loss of his son William. He was married Aug1865 to Elizabeth CHATTIN, and unto this union were born two sons, Edmund and Zeno. Elizabeth died from pneumonia 26 May 1870. He was married 25 Dec 1870 to Louisa MOSIER, and to this union seven more children were born. Isum GWIN was one of Martin Co.'s best known soldiers, spending 60 years there as a devout member of the church, remaining faithful until death. According to his military service records, Isum Gwin was 35 years old and a resident of Alfordsville in Daviess County, Indiana when he was enlisted by John W. Tucker on August 9, 1862 into what became Company D of the 80th Indiana.Ý Isum was appointed by Tucker as the 1st Sergeant (also called Orderly Sergeant) of Co. D on August 16, 1862.Ý He was mustered into the Union Army at that rank for a 3 year term of service on September 3, 1862 at Camp Gibson near the town of Princeton in Gibson County, Indiana.ÝÝAt that time the Army noted he was a "Farmer" and stood "5 feet 7 inches" tall with "blue" eyes, "light" hair and a "fair" complexion.

As 1st Sergt., Isum Gwin was the highest ranked Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) in his company, and was fourth in command after 2nd Lieutenant William F. Green, 1st Lieutenant Jacob Scammahorn and Captain John W. Tucker, the company commander.Ý

Sergt. Isum was recorded as "Present" with the 80th from its official formation on September 3, 1862 until May 2, 1865.

On October 8, 1862 the 80th took part in the bloody fighting at Perryville in Boyle County, Kentucky. This was the first time the regiment was in combat ('saw the elephant' as they said back then) and it took place just 30 days after it had first drawn its uniforms and weapons. During 2 hours of heavy fighting the 80th lost 25 men killed, 116 wounded, and 16 captured out of the 738 men it took into the battle. This was a 27% casualty rate, and amounted to 45% of all casualties the regiment would suffer during its entire service.Ý According to his service records, Sergt. Gwin "Lost Coat and Blanket Knapsack Shirt [and] drawers in battle" at Perryville.

According to a letter in the possession of the Gwin family, Sergt. Gwin fell in front of a horse-drawn Army wagon and it ran over his head in late October, 1862 between Lebanon and Danville, Ky.Ý

On January 30, 1863 Sergt. Gwin was commissioned as the new 2nd Lieut. of Co. D by Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton, replacing Lieut. Green who had resigned his commission and left the Army on December 20, 1862.Ý Isum received his commission on March 25, 1863, but then his promotion paperwork got lost.Ý This resulted in a 6 month delay in mustering him in at his new rank, during which he worked as an officer, but was paid as a 1st Sergt.ÝTo add insult to injury, 2nd Sergt. John W. Clark was promoted over Gwin's head to be the new Captain of Co. D when Capt. Tucker was promoted to be the 80th's new Major.

In August 1863 the 80th departed Kentucky and marched over the Cumberland Mountains into Confederate-held Eastern Tennessee as part of a large Federal force under the command of US Major General Ambrose E. Burnside.Ý There, on October 12, 1863 at Loudon in Loudon County, 1st Sergt. Gwin was finally mustered in as the 2nd Lieutenant of Co. D.

The 80th spent a very cold, miserable, hungry winter in Eastern Tennessee, primarily at Loudon, but also near Knoxville at Strawberry Plains in Jefferson County and at Mossy Creek.Ý

On February 24, 1864 2nd Lieut. Gwin was commissioned as the new 1st Lieut. of Co. D by Gov. Morton, replacing Lieut. Scammahorn (he had resigned his commission the previous June, but had not been officially discharged until February 1864).Ý Isum received his commission on May 11, 1864, but once again events transpired to delay his promotion and pay, this time due to the demands of an active military campaign.Ý At the time the 80th was in northern Georgia, taking part in the opening actions of the famous 4 month campaign led by US Major General William T. Sherman to capture Atlanta Georgia.ÝÝ

Three days after his commission arrived, the 80th took part in the bloody fighting at Resaca, Georgia, on May 14, 1864.Ý There it suffered 26 killed and 100 wounded out of the 270 men who were ordered to take part in a doomed charge against entrenched Confederate troops. This was a 47% casualty rate, one of the highest of any Federal unit in the battle.Ý Lieut. Gwin wrote the following about that day in his diary.

"Co D 34 guns...ordered to advance and charge the Rebble forts at 12 O'clock got in [no closer than] one hundred yards of the [enemy's] works [where we] remained until dark when I went to the Regt."

On July 1, 1864 Lieut. Gwin was commissioned by Gov. Morton as the new Captain of Co. D, replacing Capt. Clarke who had resigned his commission in mid-June.Ý Sergt. Warner G. Smoot was commissioned to replace Gwin as 1st Lieutenant, and the 2nd Lieutenant position was left permanently vacant.Ý During this period the 80th was marching and/or fighting on a nearly continuous basis.

In fighting on July 19, 1864, near Decatur, Georgia, Lieut. Gwin earned the following praise in an official report by Major Tucker, who was then commanding the 80th.

"...on the 19th met a heavy rebel force; attacked and drove them beyond Decatur, losing a few men wounded.Ý Here I wish to speak of the efficient, brave, and gallant conduct of First Lieut. Isum Gwin, Company D, who had charge of the skirmish line of my regiment.Ý He drove the rebels, having to advance through a field under a galling fire, yet with that courage rare and only belonging to the brave, led forward his men, being present at all times where most needed, steadily driving the enemy, killing and wounding many, proving himself on this occasion, as on every other, worthy of a better position..."

A step in that direction was achieved on July 25, 1864, near Atlanta, Georgia, when 2nd Lieut. Gwin was officially mustered into the Army as the new 1st Lieut. of Co. D.Ý About that time he wrote the following to his parents back in Indiana.

"To day has been tolerable quiet but little firing -- I think the Johnnies are getting tired or they certainly have reason to be quiet their loss in killed wounded and prisoners is estimated at 25,000 men since our Army crossed the Chattahoochee River...our loss will not exceed 10,000 men.Ý Our Boys [in Co. D] are in tolerable good health and spirits...Ý Your Son untill Death."

It was not until September 8, 1864 at Decatur, Georgia, just after the Confederates abandoned Atlanta, that 1st Lieut. Gwin was finally mustered in as the new Captain of Co. D.Ý The Army made his elevation retroactive to July 1st, which led eventually to his being paid at as a Captain for those months.

In the fall of 1864 the 80th was detached from Sherman's forces and ordered back to Tennessee.Ý There during a 3 day period in late November the 80th was force marched from Columbia to Spring Hill, where it narrowly escaped capture, on to Franklin, where it built breastworks and fought in a desperate 5 hour battle, and then through the night to Nashvillle.Ý There in mid-December it took part in the 2 day battle that effectively destroyed the Confederate Army under Major General John Bell Hood.ÝÝ

The 80th was then transferred to Washington, D.C. and on down to North Carolina to rejoin Sherman's forces.Ý It was camped at Raleigh in April 1865 when the war ended with the surrender of most of the remaining Confederate forces.Ý There on April 28th Capt. Gwin wrote the following request for a 30 day leave of absence.

"I have been in the service nearly (3) years and have never had a leave of absence.Ý I have been with my Company ever since the Regt was organized.Ý On entering the service, I left my businesses unsettled.Ý It is now in such a condition that it needs my personal attention."

Capt. Gwin's request was approved and he departed for Indiana on May 2, 1865, leaving 1st Sergt. John Harris in command of the company (Lieut. Smoots having been discharged the previous month due to disabilities).Ý Capt. Gwin was back with his company when he and the 43 others still in its ranks were honorably mustered out of the Army on June 22, 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina when the regiment was disbanded.ÝÝ

The surviving veterans of the 80th Indiana reached Indianapolis on July 3, 1865.Ý There on the 5th they were addressed by Governor Morton at a gala reception dinner, and on the 8th were paid off and released to their homes as civilians.

ÝÝ I found your web pages while surfing around and I must say I'm impressed with all of the info you have gathered and presented. I am a descendant of Isom/Isham Gwin through his daughter Elizabeth who married David Denton (through their son George Denton and Aretta Weathers, their son Joseph DentonÝand Miriam (Hobson) Purkhiser, their son Harmon/Herman Denton and Laura Timmons, their son Thomas Denton and Verna Marie Sparks, their daughter Marilyn (Denton) Sutton, who is my mother). I've made a few trips to Orange County, Indiana in search of Denton and Gwin info over the years and was just about to e-mail you with a copy of Isom Gwin's will and estate settlement, when I saw that James T. Wall had beat me to it and it's already on one of your pages.
ÝÝ I know you have a lot of info from some of the Baptist Church records in Tennessee, and the Sevier County Library site has been a great resource. I'm attaching a file I have that I copied from their site (plagiarism!) containing "Providence Baptist Curch Minutes, Jefferson County and Sevier County Tennessee, October 1797 to September 1828". I don't have the site address handyÝbut I can find it for you if you'd like. I copied every entry that mentioned Isom Gwin and edited out all of the rest. You may have seen this, but the January 19, 1805 entry plainly shows that Isom Gwin did in fact have a son named William and I know this was one of theÝthings you were speculating aboutÝon your site. I also found the Sept 19, 1812 entry to be a little comical, but that's another story.
ÝÝ One question I had for you was on Richard Gwin and Sarah Chesley. If they were married about 1773 as you estimate, and Isom was their son, how could Isom have married Mary Canterbury in 1787? He would have been a bit too young wouldn't he? Is there any other proof that links Richard to Isom? I know that Isom Gwin married a Mary Likens in Orange Co, IN about 1819 I think (I'll check on the date, I have it somewhere.) and that this was probably Isom Sr. and the Mary who died in 1855, causing Isom's estate to be settled then. There was also an Isom that married a Betsey Snowden (see Item 24 below)Ýin Orange Co.Ýand I think this is Isom Jr. I don't know for sure. I'll have to dig out my Gwin files, I'm going completely from memory at the moment.
ÝÝÝ Anyway, just wanted to say I appreciate your site and it will probably take me quite a while to digest all of the info you have there. Let me know if there is any way I can help the cause. I've been doing this off and on for 15 years and don't have much time anymore with 4 small kids, or much computer expertise (none really), but I know I have some notes on Isom from different church records from Orange, Crawford, and Washington counties in Indiana and the land grant info from Tennessee which youÝhave. I'll see what all I can find if there's anything you don't already have.

BLUE RIVER TOWNSHIP

As published in the souvenir Cenntenial Program for the 1959 Harrison County Fair.

Blue River Township is located in the northwest corner of Harrison County; as its name implies, Big Blue River flows along and forms the west boundary of this township.

According to the records in the courthouse in Corydon, the first settlers of this township took land in the extreme northwest part of the towship along the river. These were Arthur Whitehead in 1817; Levi Taylor and John Coe in 1818; and Benjamin King in 1819. Josiah Lincoln an uncle of President Abraham Lincoln, settled in south west Blue River Township. Josiah Lincoln had six children; two sons Jacob and Thomas Lincoln and four daughters who married John Crutchfield, Isom Denton, John Briscoe, and John Sullenzer [Sullenger?].

In 1809 and early road ran from southeast to northwest across this township; this was part of the main road that extended from Corydon to Fredericksburg- the later place was located on the Old Post Road of the Vincennes Trace.

Four churhces have served this area- namely Hancock's Chapel, Blue River Chapel, Mt. Zion and Mt. Tabor. Each of these churches have cemeteries where many of the early settlers are buried. Hancock's Chapel is a Methodist church and Blue River Chapel is a Christian Church. Mt. Zion and Mt. Tabor were both destroyed by fire. The former was never rebuilt but Mt.Tabor, which had once been a Christian Church of Christ, was rebuilt.

The White Caps or the Regulators operated in this township for a number of years. On some occasions whippings were administered by the white hooded men and on several incidents, lives were lost.

In January 1834, William Gresham, the Sheriff of Harrison County was shot and killed as he attempted to make an arrest in Blue River Township.

One room schools once served as educational centers of the township; they were familiar names such as Hancock's Chapel, Brush College, Hati, Wyman, Babcock's, Steven's and Armstrong's. The Depauw High School was constructed in 1910 and served until 1950 when it was discontinued. Blue River, Spencer, and Jackson Townships have combined their efforts in education and all children of this area now attend the North Central Consolidated School at Ramsey.

The Hancock Chapel area was served by a school, church and store. This store was operated by Ed Routh who also served as postmaster. Routh later sold the store to the Wenning family who operates the present store in a building which had once been the original one- room school at Hancock's Chapel. Bill Trotter conducted a mail route from Fredericksburg through Hancock's Chapel to Ramsey on the railroad.

The thriving little town of Depauw is on the main route of the Southern Railroad. This town which is divided- part in Spencer Township - was platted by Felician Henriott, April 8, 1884. Logs hauled to this point by ox teams. Also at Depauw were Grigg's Cannery, Schuppert's Flour Mills, and numerous stores.

The southwest corner of Blue River Township is known as the "Milltown Corner". Here the river forms a pocket around this area. That part of Milltown (photo at left) that is east of the river is in Blue River Township, but the main part of the town lies on the west bank of the river in Crawford County, Indiana.

In this area known as the "Milltown Corner", there are extensive deposits of limestone. Here lime was burned and shipped to distant markets. The largest limestone holdings in this area have been by the Louisville Cement Company. Today poultry is being raised, as an experiment, in the abandoned tunnels of these quarries. During the past year the Southern Railroad has re-routed its tracks through this "Milltown Corner". The Road now crosses Blue River to the north of Milltown, has eliminated several sharp curves in the tracks and missed Milltown entirely.

Ade Stevens had a large orchard one and a half mile north of Depauw and J.H. Bruner had an orchard one mile southeast of Hancock Chapel. D.F. Adams of Blue River Township was one of the first in the county to raise pure bred Jersey cattle. Today Blue River Township is strictly and agricultural area; the farmers are thrifty and scientific in their practices.

Family names that have long been associated with Blue River Township are: Armstrong, Babcock. Briscoe, Bruner. Durnil, Goss, Horner, Hancock, Jackson, Lagel, Lincolns, Lofton, Mott, Seacat, Routh, Smith, Stevens, Totten, Trowbridge, Voyles, and Weathers.
