1.  Most of the following information  is from a copy of excerpts from the book The "Connection" in East Tennessee by Olga Jones Edwards and Izora Waters Frizzell, which copy was sent to me in December 1999 by Cousin Edith Walker, my newly-discovered cousin from Georgia. I now own a copy of this book myself.

Note: On this page and the "Magill" page, the code "TCIET" refers to this book.
For example, TCIET#432 is the book's reference number for John Walker, Sr.

2.  Today, 15 Mar 2003, I found in my WALKER files a printout entitled "Descendants of John Walker, Sr." that I must have copied from someone's online Genealogy page.  I'm sorry I cannot now give you the source of this information, but I share it with you here in hopes that someone may recognize it and identify the owner.  All material from this source appears below in this italicized green text, and all of it should be taken as unproven.

3.  The sources for John and Jane Walker Gwin's information may be found on their page.

4.  Cousin Alice Foster-Blevins is the source for the details in this orange color of the descendants of 3.7(2) Rebecca "Becca" Walker and Elijah "Lige" Hatcher, below.

5.  5th Cousin-once-removed Rhonda E. Harrill Jones has provided an extensive insight into her own line descending from John Walker I  of Wigton, Scotland, through William Marion Walker. Her notes are included throughout in these green-background boxes.

6.  Cousin James Melton checked in as well and provided his connection to the William Marion Walker line.

7.  Cousins Robin Holloway Waddill and Anthony Cooper also contacted us, providing two more connections to William Marion Walker.

He and his family along with three of his brother Alexander's children, left Strangford Bay in May 1726. He transported his family and settled in Chester Co., PA, where he died in September 1734; his wife died in 1738. Both are buried at Nottingham Meeting House in Chester Co., PA.)

21.05--John Walker, Sr., b. WFT est. 1713-1744 in what was then Greene Co., NC--after 1796 was/is Greene Co., TN; d. 1796, Greene Co., TN; m. Mary Anderson; TCIET#432; 5 children;

John Walker, Sr., lived and died in Greene Co., NC (since 1796, TN), at his home on Meadow Creek. (Descendants often refer to him as "MCJW"--Meadow Creek John Walker.) His will, written on Feb. 18, 1796, was probated later that year. Except for the information it contains, we know almost nothing about John Walker.  A Joseph Walker who married into the Magill family (just as John's children did) witnessed his will and may have been his brother, as he did not have a son Joseph.  A close association also seems to have existed between John Walker and Charles Kilgore, Sr., who was one of the executors. [John M. Gwin Note: This Charles Kilgore is perhaps the brother of Martha Kilgore who married this Daniel Walker on 26 May 1788. Perhaps Charles married one of the senior John Walker's daughters and is thereby his son-in-law. IF THIS IS THE CASE, then any descendants of Daniel and Charles would be double cousins.]

John Walker, Sr., received two land grants for a total of 275 acres on Meadow Creek.  Grant 459 is recorded in Book 2 page 30, the other in Book B p. 259.  Both were granted 20 Sep 1787.  On 1 Nov 1786, a John Walker received two grants for 500 acres on the French Broad, but these may have been to another John Walker.

Mary, the widow of John Walker, outlived her husband by seven years, as her estate was settled on 28 Jan 1803.  Apparently she made her home with her son Anderson after her husband's death, as Anderson was in charge of her financial affairs when she died.  A copy of the settlement follows:

Anderson Walker exhibits in court an Inventory of the Estate of Mary Walker, deceased, in the following to wit:  "a just and full inventory of all debts goods and chattles belonging to the estate of Mary Walker of Greene Co., Tenn., deceased, as came to the knowlege of the subscribed administrator of the said Estate as follows:"
"To two smocks, to two aprons, to three bed gowns, to four petticoats, to one habit, to two pair stockings, to one feather bed and bedding, to one side saddle, to twelve and half years of female slaves time."
       To cash per Thomas Walker.......L 5
       To cash per self...........................L 21
       To ditto per Daniel Walker.........L 13-10
        ditto per Charles Kilgore............L 1-16
"Per Anderson Walker, Adm.  Friday, Jan 28"

John Walker's will is interesting and factual.  Some punctuation has been added some spelling changed. Part of the preamble is omitted.

JOHN WALKER'S WILL--FEB. 18, 1796

In the name of God Amen.  I, JOHN WALKER SENR., of Green County and State of Tenn. being disordered in body but not in mind, do make my last will and testament; item, my beloved wife MARY WALKER should have the negro wench and her child Phebe, one horse, jack, saddle and bridle and one bed and furniture and what she thinks she needs.  And likewise it is my will that whoever of my children's hands the young wench Phebe shall fall into, that she should be free at twenty five years of age and to keep her and pay her for her work and not to let her run through the country.

Item, it is my will that my sons JOHN, THOMAS, ANDERSON, and DANIEL WALKER and MICHAL BLEW, my son in law, should have equal part of all my movables.

Item, it is my will that my negro man Charles should choose which of my sons he will have for his master and whatever he is appraised to, for his master to pay all the rest their part of praisement.  Land divided between my sons ANDERSON and DANIEL WALKER.

My son DANIEL WALKER and CHARLES KILGORE should be my executors of this my last will and Testament.  I revoke and disclaim and disannul all other wills.  This is my last will.  To witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this Eighteenth Day of February 1796.  John Walker (his mark)

Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of JAMES BROWN SENR. Jurat, JOHN WALKER Jurat, JOSEPH WALKER Jurat.

It states that John Walker of Tuckleechee Cove was a member of the Friends (Quakers). This may--or may not--have to do with the reason that Isham Gwin did not name John Gwin in his will. We know that Isham was a Baptist preacher (with quite a temper, we understand!) who was sent/released from the Wear Valley Baptist Church (along with his wife and son William) to pastor/preach at the church in Tuckaleechee Cove. We assume this is where John met Jane Walker, whom he married on 8 Apr 1812 (John and Jane are my ggg-grandparents). We also assume that if this marriage had the blessing of Isham and Mary, that Isham would have married them. But as it was, they were married by Joseph Walker--Jane's brother and a Justice of the Peace! Furthermore, John would have left soon afterward to fight with Andy Jackson in the Indian Wars in Alabama, and as Friends/Quakers were pacifists, this may not have set well with Jane's parents (that is, if Thomas and Elizabeth were also Friends/Quakers). So perhaps John and Jane moved to Alabama in order to physically separate from BOTH their parents. (The abovementioned son William, who married Susanna Beard and also moved to Alabama, is also missing from Isham's will; he shows up in Alabama also, so perhaps he, too, was intentionally left out of the inheritance because he sided with John.) Regardless, we know that Isham and the rest of his family moved to Indiana where Isham and Mary both died and are buried. In 2005: and now we may have the rest of the story. The biography of one of Isham's Indiana grandsons tells of Isham's growing hatred of slavery and how he freed his own slaves and left Tennessee with others of his family and neighborhood to move to the free state of Indiana in order to be away from this evil. Meanwhile, sons William and John (and perhaps Chesley as well) moved to Alabama in disagreement with their father.
The earliest settlers [ie. of Blount Co.] were mainly Scotch Presbyterians, and the first churches were organized by them. In 1786 Eusebia Church was organized in the McTEER neighborhood, it is thought by Hezekiah BALCH. A large log building was erected, and later a camp-ground was constructed near by. In 1792 or 1793 New Providence Church was organized in the vicinity of CRAIG's fort, now Maryville, by Rev. Gideon BLACKBURN, who also established Baker's Creek Church soon after. In 1796 the nucleus of a colony of Friends was formed near where Friendsville now is, by John HACKNEY, James MATTHEWS, James ALLEN and John WALKER. The next year William GRIFFITH located in the vicinity of Unitia, and Thomas JONES and William and Daniel DURHAM on Cloyd's Creek. The land in the vicinity of Louisville was obtained by Robert, John and James GILLESPIE under the act of the Legislature to promote the erection of iron works. They build a small furnace and forge, which they ceased to operate as soon as they obtained a title to the land.

The erection of small tub mills was begun with the earliest settlement of the county. The first is said to have been built near McTEER's fort. After the organization of the county, in 1795 and 1796, permits to erect mills were granted to the following persons: John CRAIG, on Pistol Creek; John WALKER, in Tuckaleechee Cove; Samuel THOMPSON, on Crooked Creek; Thomas GIBSON, on Gallaher's Creek, and James McNUTT, on Pistol Creek.

The raising of cotton being an important industry in the early history of the county, a large number of cotton-gins were erected. Those in operation in 1802 were owned by Thomas BERRY, James SCOTT, Samuel HOUSTON, William STANFIELD, William LOWRY and Patrick COLLINS.

Hello Dan--thanks for writing--great to meet you!

John Gwin;
I am researching various Walkers of early East Tennessee. Your Crowsons Cove Gwins settled very near Thomas Walker's family. It is not yet clear whether Thomas lived in Millers Cove or Tuckaleechee Cove, but both are near Crowsons Cove.
I don't know which either, but if I were a betting man (and if I had any money!), I'd put it on Tuckaleechee Cove, as that is where Isham Gwin (John's father) preached at the Baptist church before John and Jane moved to Alabama, perhaps even before they were married--which would explain how they met. Isham then moved with most of the rest of his family to southern Indiana. [John M. Gwin Addendum: On the other hand, we now know (from Jan Thomas' transcription of Miller's Cove church minutes) that John's brother, William, married a Susana (nee unk.) and lived in Miller's Cove; William and Susana were members ther for about a year before they left and moved to Alabama with John and Jane. So perhaps Thomas was from Miller's Cove.]
This Thomas Walker was descended from "Meadow Creek" John Walker of early Greene/Cocke Co., TN. The exact location of the Meadow Creek homestead has not yet be determined. The "Meadow Creek" Walkers have been connected via DNA results to Isaiah Walker of Little River in Blount Co. No known connection exists between these two other than the DNA. These Walkers remain unconnected to any other Walkers--either by research or DNA. A mysterious Henry Shields appears involved in a lawsuit with John Walker, Samuel Walker, and Robert Walker which all remain unidentified. It has occurred to me that you may have some infomation on the Richard Shields line that would trace them thru time/location so that we may be better able to properly identify Henry Shields.
No, I don't have any more than I have presented on the various pages you've already seen--sorry.
By the way. I have discovered a few tidbits about your John Gwin and Jane Walker that you do not include in your website information. Occassionally they visited the Millers Cove Baptist Church. They are recorded several times in the church Minutes Book which has been recently published.
This is indeed very interesting to me! Can you tell me where I can see a copy of these minutes?
I went back to my local genealogical library to review this book after discovering your website and found it missing. I do hope it was only misshelved and will again appear. Dan Welch
Best to you and yours,

[Mike S. Wallace, born some time before his father’s death on 3 Jul 1819.  Elizabeth then married William Sparks in 1829 and had a daughter, Rebecca, with him.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Magill, and  was indeed born in Tennessee, most likely in Blount County, or maybe Green County, depending on when her parents moved.  I have not verified the sources thoroughly, although it seems to be the consensus of many  people.]

COLONEL JOHN WILLIAMS
  • DESIGNATION:  Mounted Volunteers of East Tennessee
  • DATES:  December 1812 - March 1813
  • MEN MOSTLY FROM:  Blount, Grainger, Knox, and Washington Counties
  • CAPTAINS:  Samuel Bunch, David Vance, William Walker.
  • BRIEF HISTORY:
    While the volunteers under Andrew Jackson were gathering at Nashville for their expedition to the Natchez region, a similar gathering was taking place in Knoxville.  Their destination was the territory of East Florida, under the domain of Spain, and the leader of the expedition was John Williams of Knox County.

    Williams, along with approximately 250 volunteers, marched to East Florida to join with the combined forces of U.S. troops and Georgia "patriots" to "liberate" this region from Spanish control.  Ostensibly, the expedition was raised to eliminate the threat of marauding Creeks and Seminoles on the borders of Georgia.

    Like Jackson's Natchez Expedition, the men of the Florida Expedition were considered to be from the finest families of the region and, like the Natchez Expedition, the excursion into Florida accomplished little.  Some Creek villages were destroyed, and the Tennessee volunteers suffered only one casualty.  John Williams later became colonel of the 39th U.S. Infantry, a unit instrumental in Jackson's victory at Horseshoe Bend (27 March 1814).

    John, in your notes for the census of 20 January 1920, you have listed that James Moore's wife must have been deceased at this time, as she was not listed in the census.  The true fact is that she left her husband and three children; no one really knows for sure where she went, but she came back later when my grandfather "Jack E. Moore" was around 17 or 18 and another child, don't remember his age right off but it is listed in my files and his name was Willie Oscar "Moore"; though none believed he was truly a child of James W. Moore's, "Jim" always treated him as his own.  This is from my grandmother who was the wife of Jack E. Moore, son of Jim "James" W. Moore.  Rhonda

    This is clearly the person reported to us by Rhonda Harrill Jones. Mary reports here that she has borne 13 children, only six of whom are living in 1900. But this report will definitely allow us to get a correct birth order for at least these six. At this time, we can only offer speculation as to the order in which the other seven were born.

    [BLANK] Living next door to this family is a "Kaylor" family who could be this Nancy's grandparents, parents, and siblings. The eldest is George Kaylor, age 85. However, there are other Caylors living on the other side of this Walker family, so Nancy's parents and siblings could be there as well. We'll perhaps learn which family is which by looking in the 1850 census.

    TN/TN/TN none This is Mary Ann's son Jack and his three kids. We earlier had assumed that his wife--their mother--was deceased, and that perhaps she died in chidbirth with Joseph B.  But Cousin Rhonda Jones has corrected that erroneous assumption of mine. She writes:

Moore.

From their ages in 1910, I'd say these boys were twins; further, there appears to be no sign of a married father. But now, looking at Carl's age in the 1920 census, perhaps it was the 1910 enumerator who erred--maybe Carl's age then should've been 5, not 12.]

    [John M. Gwin Note: This cousin signed my guestbook and made known to me her claim to Walker descendency on 19 Sep 2005.  I'm posting it here since I don't have any record of where Idaho Joe Walker fits into the birth order. If I have everything correct, she is my children's 6th cousin and my own 5th cousin once removed. (Catharine, if you have more you want me to add, please let me know! :-) Here's Catharine's post:]

    My name is Catharine E. Walker Lindsay. I am the great-granddaughter of Joseph Walker, son of John Walker and brother of the Greenbriar Walker sisters. When my aunt and uncle were teenagers, they visited the Sisters at the cabin. My ggf was known by his family as Idaho Joe Walker. I had a chance to come to Johnson City, TN, and some friends and I hiked to the cabin. In searching the net for general information on the Sisters I found your site. Grandpa Joe was not big on sharing family history, so we only had bits and pieces of his background. Joe married Catharine Belle Maggart and they had children, one being Edis Virginia who married Clive John Lindsay. They had children the oldest being Clive Walker Lindsay, my father. I really appreciated the information on your site--it helps fill out the picture for that part of my family. Thank you. Catharine Lindsay

    From the names and ages of his family, this is clearly our Giles. Living next door are several Dunn families I assume to be his brothers:
    James, 38, and Eliza;
    David, 33, and Milly;
    William, 48, and Mary;
    Dennis, 31, and Mary;
    J. D., 27, and Nancy; and a
    Peter Walker, 29, and Susannah, 25 (whom I am fairly certain is a Dunn); all of whom are b. in TN. Cohuttah today is just inside the Georgia line, directly n. of Dalton and just east of Chattanooga, TN. These families probably moved en masse from Blount Co., a trek of about 80 miles "as the crow flies". If they all came together, the ages and PsOB of their children pinpoint the move around 1854.

    I believe this to be 4.10--Peter W. Walker and his wife, Susan Dunn; Peter is a younger brother of Sydney, and I believe that Susan/Susannah is likely a sister of Giles. If this is true, then all their children are double cousins.
