Meet the Family of David and Elizabeth Gwin Denton!

2.0--Isom Gwin m. Mary Canterbury
3.2--Elizabeth Gwin, b. 1788 (ca. 1787) in [Sevier Co.] TN--[age 63 in 1850 census of Orange Co., IN]; d. 1858 Orange Co, IN; bd. unk.; m. David Denton (b. 1778 in Hampshire Co., VA--now WV--[age 72 in 1850 census of Orange Co., IN], [age 82 in the 27 Jul 1860 census of res. #172 of Valeen in the Southeast Township, Orange Co., IN--living in home of Barnett and Rebecca Stalcup, the seven Stalcup children, and a James W. 4.01--Allen Denton, b. 1804; m1. Hannah Anderson
; m2. 25 Nov 1845 to Clara Foster.
4.02--Jane Denton, b. in TN; m. William Watkins;
[JMG Note: Jim Wall has this Jane in the birth order's second spot, as shown here. Mary Goldman lists her first. While definite dates are offered my each for the births of Allen and Isom, no claim or evidence is offered by either for Jane. Seeing the four-year gap between Allen and Isom, however, tends to make me think that she is more likely to fit between them, so I side with Jim on this one.]
4.03--Isom Denton, b. 1808; m1. Elizabeth Lincoln; m2. Elizabeth Weathers;
4.04--George Denton, b. 1810; m. (Margaret?) Arreta/Aritta Weathers

4.06--David Denton, b. 1817 m. Eliza Emeline Bolt;

4.07--Thomas Denton, b. 1820 m. Fannie Mariah (Minerva?) Downs
[
JMG Note: I'm guessing that Fannie, Joel and Tempa Downs are siblings; if they are, of course, then all their descendants are double-cousins to each other.]

4.08--Mary Denton, b. 12 Jan 1822 m. Joel Downs;

4.09--Elizabeth Denton, b. 15 Nov 1823;
[JMG Note: Jim Wall does not list this child, but Mary Goldman does. Two things--the specific (though undocumented) date and the five-year spread between Mary and Rebecca convince me to go with Mary here.] ; [Is the following Elizabeth this d/o David and Elizabeth: Denton, Elizabeth m. Stalcup, Henry on 9-23-1847No, she is not.]
4.10-Rebecca Denton, b. 1827 m. Barnett Stalcup;
4.11--John Denton, b. 1830  m. Tempa Downs;

And now, here are their children's descendants in more detail:

From 5th Cousin Jim Wall:

John, I am providing you a copy of the DEATH RETURN of Allen Denton, age 79, filed 22 Dec 1883. It indicates that his father was David Denton and that his mother was a Gwin. It also indicates that Allen was born in Tennessee.

The 1860 Census showed Allen Denton, age 56 years, birthplace E. [East] Tennessee, living in Stampers Creek Township, Orange County, Indiana.

The DEATH RETURN indicated the father's and mother's birthplace was unknown. However, the 1850 Census for Southeast Township, Orange County, Indiana shows that David Denton, age 72 [born ca. 1778], was born in Virginia; his wife Elizabeth [Gwin] Denton, age 63 [born ca. 1787] was born in Tennessee. Since Tennessee was not established until 1796, I guess she was born in North Carolina, in that part which became Tennessee. [John M. Gwin Note: I agree--and most likely, in my opinion on the 249-acre family farm in western Sevier Co. where most of the rest of the kids were born.]

David and Elizabeth Denton, Allen's parents, lived in Dwelling House number 35. Living in dwelling number 33 was Manervy Right [Wright], age 39 years, born in Tennessee. Was she the widow of Elijah Wright? I believe that she could have been one of the last children of Isom and Mary Canterberry Gwin. Her Right children were: Ruth, 21 (I believe she married a Childress. JTW); Susan, 19; Benjamin, 14; Leander, 10; and Elijah, 5. (I recall seeing these names in the settlement of Isom Gwin's estate in 1855. JTW)

Also living in the house was Mary Gwyn, 80, born in Virginia, who could not read or write, and was blind. Was this lady the widow of my ancestor (4ggf) Isom Gwin/Isham Guinn? I must note that there is a marriage between an Isom Gwin and a Mary Likens recorded 20 Oct 1819 in Crawford County, Indiana-- is this Isom Gwin, Senior or Junior? [John M. Gwin Note: Junior.]

When Allen's brother Isom Denton married Elizabeth Lincoln in Harrison County, Indiana, Allen gave the consent of his father David Denton and the consent of Josiah Lincoln, Elizabeth's father, on 17 July 1826.

The papers of Lucien Williams were filed in the Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky, after his death around 1952. Mr. Williams was preparing a genealogical book on the Weathers (and other) family, but died before he could complete it. He mentioned in the notes that Benjamin Weathers' second wife was Virginia Jane Tipton, whose father Isham? Gwynn was a Baptist preacher, and her mother was a Canterbury. He did not indicate the source of his information.

5.05?--M. J. Denton, b. ca. 1845 [age 15 in the 30 Jul 1860 census of res. #41 in the Stampers Creek Twp., Orange Co., IN]; d. unk., bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch. [JMG Note: Fact 1: In 1860, this young lady was living 19 residences away from Allen Denton's family in the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Grigsby and family. Fact 2: Allen's first wife, Hannah, died in March 1845, leaving him with four children, ages 16, 12, 4, and 3.  Fact 3: One of the chief causes of early death among married women in 1845 was complications in childbirth.  Theory: I speculate that Hannah died of complications surrounding the birth of a child--this M. J. Denton--who survived. Allen could not care for this infant and gave her to the William Grigsby family to raise, who kept her as their own even after Allen remarried to Clara Foster.  READERS: Can you offer any evidence to prove or disprove this theory?Possible evidence against: M. J. does not appear in the 1850 census of this William Grigsby family.

[
John M. Gwin Note:  Jim Wall contributed the following:]
Allen Denton, b. ca. 1804 in east TN; d. age 79, death certif. filed 22 Dec 1883; lived in Stampers Creek Twp., Orange Co., IN.; the 1850 Census for Southeast Twp, Orange Co., IN, shows David Denton, age 72 [born ca. 1778], b. in VA; his wife Elizabeth [Gwin] Denton, age 63 [b. ca. 1787], b. in TN. David and Elizabeth Denton, Allen's parents, lived in residence #35, and in res. #33 was Manervy Right [Wright], age 39, b. TN. Was she the widow of Elijah Wright? I believe that she could have been one of the last children of Isom and Mary Canterberry Gwin. Her "Right" children were: Ruth, 21 (I believe she married a Childress.

[JMG NOTE: Almost assuredly Isham Jr., who was probably also the husband of Betsy Snowden]

On 19 Jun 1880, the U.S. Census of Blue River Township, Harrison Co., IN, recorded on p. 26, l. 15, an Allen Denton, age  75, living in residence 201 with his wife, Clarisa, age 57, daughters Sarah, 29, and Debora A., 20, son Joel H. (or F.), 24, and grandson Wesley L., 1.  Living next door in residence 202 was William Denton, 29, his wife Mary, 25, daughters Ada, 10, and Mary, 6, and son Walter, 4; we believe this to be a son of either Allen or Isom. Living in residence 203 was the family of Allen's brother Isom Denton, 72, his wife Elizabeth, 62 daughters Hanna E., 20-something, Rachel, 23, and Mary A., 16, granddaughter Dora, 10, and grandson Benjamin Trobridge, 4.

The papers of Lucien Williams were filed in the Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky, after his death around 1952. Mr. Williams was preparing a genealogical book on the Weathers (and other) family, but died before he could complete it. He mentioned in the notes that Benjamin Weathers' second wife was Virginia Jane Tipton, whose father Isham Gwynn was a Baptist preacher, and her mother was a Canterbury. He did not indicate the source of his information.

4.02--Jane Denton, b. ca. 1806 in TN; d. unk.; m. 21 Dec 1824 to
William Watkins;

[John M. Gwin Note: I finally put two and two together and realized that this William Watkins could easily be the sibling of the Nancy Watkins who married this Jane's uncle, Richard W. Gwin. Sure enough, a Barbara Surratt had a post on Genforum's Watkins Family Forum that confirmed this! You can see Barbara's post at http://genforum.genealogy.com/watkins/messages/4193.html -- or read it right here!

Josiah Lincoln was the middle son of  "Captain" Abraham Lincoln; the oldest son was Mordecai and the youngest was Thomas, father of President Abraham Lincoln. So Josiah was an uncle of the president. It is sometimes confusing because President Abraham has the same name as his grandfather. Josiah Lincoln and Catherine Barlow named their first daughter Barbara, presumably for her grandmother Anna Barbara Moyer. I think all these women spoke German, because my grandmother, who was born in 1876, told me that her grandmother, who was the daughter of Barbara Lincoln, spoke some German. My grandmother used certain expressions in German.
Shelia

1._--Capt. A. Lincoln (m. Anna Barbara Moyer?)
2.1--Mordecai Lincoln
2.2--Josiah Lincoln m. Catherine Barlow
3.1--Barbara Lincoln
4.1--Sheila's grandmother (b. 1876)
5._--Sheila's parent
6._--Sheila
3.2--Elizabeth Lincoln m. Isom Denton (s/o David and Elizabeth Gwin Denton [d/o Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin])

3._--Thomas Lincoln m. Sarah Weathers (d/o Benjamin Weathers--d. 1881--and Glathy Bullington)

2.3--Thomas Lincoln
3._--Pres. Abr. Lincoln
This is interesting to me! The first wife of my second great-grandfather, Isom Denton, was Elizabeth Lincoln, daughter of Josiah Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln's uncle) and Catherine Barlow

Isom was the son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin

Also, Sarah Weathers married Thomas Lincoln, son of Josiah and Catherine. She was the daughter of my third great-grandparents, Benjamin Weathers and Glathy Bullington.

When Benjamin died in 1881, nine Lincoln grandchildren shared in his estate (his daughter Sarah Weathers Lincoln Sipes had died by then).

I have sort of lost the thread. Is there a relationship between the above-mentioned Anna Barbara Moyer and my ancestor Anna Barbara Weaver/Weber whose husband was Johan Georg Klaar/George Clore?

Jim Wall]

On 10 Aug 1850, the U.S. Census of District 43, Harrison Co., IN, recorded on p. 400, residence 234, an Isom Denton, age 42, and his wife, Elizabeth, 31; with a "student farmer" Joseph, 20 [JMG Note: I can't tell if Joseph is their son or some relative. If he's a son, then either Elizabeth's age must be wrong or Joseph must have been born to Isom's first wife and Elizabeth is the second wife. Her age is probably right, however, as she is still ten years younger than Isom in 1880.]; and children John, 13; David, 11; twins James and Wilford, 9; and twins Washington and Thomas, 7.

On 7 Jun 1860, the U.S. Census of Milltown (P.O.), Blue River Township, Harrison Co., IN, recorded on p. 4, residence 72, an Isom Denton, age 52, and his wife, Elizabeth, 43; with children Wilford, 18; Thomas, 15; William, 10; Hannah E., 8; Sarah E., 6; and Rachel, 4;

Living in residence 203 was the family of Allen's brother Isom Denton, 72, his wife Elizabeth, 62 daughters Hanna E., 28; Rachel, 23; and Mary A., 16; granddaughter Dora, 10; and grandson Benjamin Trobridge, 4.

So based on these census reports, at least some of the children should look like this:

5.0--John Denton, b. ca. 1837 (age 13 in 1850 census);
5.0--David Denton, b. ca. 1839 (age 9 in 1850 census);
5.0--James Denton, twin, b. ca. 1841 (age 9 in 1850 census);
5.0--Wilford Denton, twin, b. ca. 1841 (age 9 in 1850 census);
5.0--Washington Denton, twin, b. ca. 1843 (age 7 in 1850 census);
5.0--Thomas Dentontwin, b. ca. 1843 (age 7 in 1850 census);
5.0--Hanna E. Denton, b. ca. 1852 (age 28 in 1880 census);
5.0--Rachel Denton, b. ca. 1857 (age 23 in 1850 census);
