Richard Walton Gwin
and
Nancy Elizabeth Watkins
.

Signature of Richard Walton Gwin on the  9 March 1857 receipt of his portion of the inheritance on the document--dated
"Tuesday 3rd April AD 1855"--probating the will at the death of his mother, Mary Canterbury Gwin. Evidently
Richard lived far enough away that he could not attend the probate settlement, waiting almost two years for his portion.

The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, Mar 2009

.

Born, respectively, in Tennessee and Kentucky, Richard Walton Gwin and Nancy Elizabeth (nee Watkins) Gwin also lived in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas. They lived their last years in southeast Kansas on their farm in the Sycamore Valley between Neodesha (pronounced /nee-OH-deh-SHAY/) and Independence.  The town of Sycamore lies ten miles south of Neodesha in Montgomery County.  They are buried in the Neodesha City Cemetery. Neodesha is in south Wilson Co., 23 miles due north of the seat of Montgomery Co, Independence.
To find their graves, ask anyone in town how to get to the cemetery.  Upon arriving, find this thirty-foot- high statue of a Union soldier facing north (left photo). A short road leads north from the statue and tees into another going east and west (center photo). Just across this second road are the Richard Gwin plot and the Silas Gwin plot. Down the second road (to the east) is a third plot, that of Richard's grandson, Albert Wells.

Albert's family plot is marked with a huge block of granite with the name WELLS as the only inscription. Smaller stones in front and beside it mark the five individual graves there.  The large stone is visible from the statue and appears (in the right photo) to be just in front of the cannon's muzzle, though it is actually a hundred yards ENE of it.

Richard's and Nancy's plot (photo, right) contains markers for the following five graves:

1-2. Their own monument (see photos, far right)
3. Daughter-in-law Mary Elizabeth Gwin, w/o Richard W. Gwin, Jr.;
4. Grandson Earl W. Gwin, s/o Richard Jr. and Mary; and
5. Son-in-law Ezra T. Wells, h/o Eliza Louisa Gwin;

more individual photos appear at those links.  Visible in the distance is the large white marker of the Albert Wells family plot

[John M. Gwin Note: In July 2006, Cousin Cordelia Fisher sent me photocopies of the news item and obituaries I have transcribed here in this purple, all of which appeared in the Neodesha Register, Neodesha, Kansas. The last item was dated Friday, July 10, 1885. An unrelated legal notice on the same page as the R. W. Gwin obituary was dated Neodesha, Kan., Jan. 15, 1885. See more from Cordelia below.]
Mrs. E. T. Wells has been called twice of late to the bedside of her aged father, R. W. Gwin, living near Independence, who is not expected to live.  He is 82 years of age. [Cordelia Fischer Note: This is Eliza T. Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells.]

R. W. Gwinn (sic), father of Mrs. E. T. Wells, was buried in the Neodesha cemetery last Friday.  He was a resident of Sycamore Valley and was aged 82 years. He had been a pioneer in the settlement of four territories, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas, and was the father of fifteen children, fourteen of whom are living; his wife, whom he had lived with 63 years, is still living but was too much prostrated by the death of her companion to be able to attend the burial. The old pioneers are passing away and will soon live only in the memories of their children.

E. T. Wells received on last Monday a dispatch from Kansas City telling of the death of his motherinlaw, Mrs. Nancy Gwinn (sic), in that city. Mrs. Wells, who has been absent for some time, was with her mother at the time of her death. It has been but a short time since we chronicled the death of Mr. Gwinn (sic), husband of the deceased. May peace and salvation be there.

from the Friday, July 10, 1885 Neodesha Register
[John M. Gwin Note: Cordelia also sent me a photocopy of a typed transcription (of what appears to me to be page 82) of a "Marriage Register, cont." which is labeled in someone's hand, "Harrison Co., IN, Marriages, 1817-32". I have transcribed here the last entry on this page.]

According to license issued the 12th day of April 1824 I joined together in the holy state of matrimony on the 13th day of the month my son Richard Gwinn and Nancy Watkins the daughter of John Watkins. Given under my hand this 14th day of May 1824. Isom Gwinn M. G.
[John M. Gwin Note: Cordelia also sent me a photocopy of a Mar. 5, 1992, typed letter sent to her from a Terry Harper of the Loran Fawcett Funeral Home, 704 Indiana, Neodesha, Kansas 66757, the text of which I transcribe here.]

Dear Ms. Fischer:

The information I obtained from cemetery records is as follows:

R. W. Gwin, Sr.
Age: 80-11-6
Died: 1/7/1885
Nancy Gwin (Wife of R. W.)
Age: 78-3-21
Died: 7/6/1885
Mary E. Gwin
Born: 1848
Died: 1931
Earl Gwin:
Age: 1 yr., 6 mo.
Died: 1/15/1881
(Son of Mary)

These people were buried on the north half of a lot that had a large, family monument in the middle of the lot. The name on the stone was Wells.
An E. T. Wells was buried there. (10/17/1883 - 7/3/1904) The lot was bordered by a concrete bordering with the name of Gwin on it. I don't know if the Wells were related.

Sincerely,
Terry Harper

Martha--"Marthy"--is the oldest child still at home in Sep of 1850. She will marry a neighbor, William Snyder, who is living in residence 622.
The four oldest children have each married and/or are living elsewhere:

1. Mary and Gideon Bear are living next door (res. 662);
2. William is still single and unaccounted-for, but his soon-to-be bride, Catherine Bush, is living with her parents four doors away (res. 659);
3. Jane and Jehu Haigler are unaccounted-for but probably nearby; and
4. Sarah and Enoch Haigler are three doors from them (res. 660).
(Res. 661 is the home of William and Elizabeth Haigler, in their late 60's, who are probably Enoch's and Jehu's parents.)

Richard W. Gwin

This data was found on the 1880 Census Online. Richard's POB almost has to be on the 249-acre farm of his father, Isom Gwin, in Crowson's Cove, Sevier Co., TN. This also verifies that his parents, Isom Gwin and Mary Canterbury Gwin, were born in Virginia.

Nancy Gwin
wife 73 ca. 1807 KY MD MD My book on Harrison County, Indiana marriages shows the following: 4/12/1824? Richard W. Gwinn, c. of f. Isom Gwinn and Nancy Watkins, f. John Watkins by Isom Gwinn. (Richard W. Gwinn and Nancy Watkins were married in Harrison Co., IN, 12 April 1824; Isom Gwinn gave consent for his son to marry; consent of John Watkins, father of Nancy, was given by Isom Gwinn.) This data was found on the 1880 Census Online. Cousin Cordelia reports that Richard and Nancy were married by his father, Isom Gwin, a "Minister of the Gospel."

{John M. Gwin Note: In her notes on the illness and death of R. W. Gwin, Sr., above, Cousin Cordelia Fischer identified "Mrs. E. T. Wells" as being "Eliza T. Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells". If her identification is correct (and I have no reason to believe it is not), then this Mrs. Wells could be this Eliza Louisa Gwin, since cursive capital ells and tees are often mistranscribed for each other.
Mrs. E. T. Wells has been called twice of late to the bedside of her aged father, R. W. Gwin, living near Independence, who is not expected to live.  He is 82 years of age. [Cordelia Fischer Note: This is Eliza T. Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells.]}

Subject: History of Washington County, Iowa

This is a pretty good read, and it mentions the Gwins and Bears that were in the county early on. (Start on about page 294)

http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/historical/LightOn/1880wash_1.htm

"Between the years 1840 and 1846 there was a heavy immigration into the north part of the county. There was probably a larger per cent of increase in that section during that period than in any other part of the county.

"
William M. Gwin, who settled in the vicinity of Richmond in 1843, still resides on his original claim. He has probably lived in the State longer than any other inhabitant of the county, he having come to Des Moines county in 1835. Mrs. Mary Bear, Mrs. Martha Snyder and Mrs. Elizabeth Adams, sisters of Mr. Gwin, are also very early settlers, they having come to the county about the same time. Absalom Bush settled on a claim one mile west of Richmond in the year 1846; he says there were but three houses in the town at that time."

Cheers!

24.10--Margaret Gwin
, b. ca. 1842 in IA [age 8 in 1850 census]; [age 16 in 1856 Iowa State census of English River Twp., Washington Co., IA] ; d. unk.; bd. unk.; m. unk.; unk. ch.

In trying to locate this elusive daughter of Richard and Nancy in 1860 and later censuses, my thinking has been
going like this:

(1) The reason she's not living at home in 1860 must be that she's recently married and living elsewhere.
(2) I don't think she's deceased, since Jason E. Freeman's comments on Richard Walton Gwin say that he "lived to see all [his] children produce children". Granted, Jason Freeman's comments are riddled with known errors, but perhaps this particular comment is true.
(3) If she's alive and newly wed, then it would be likely that she's married a local and they're still living nearby.
(4) So let's do a search of 1860 Washington County for any Margaret born in 1842 in Iowa.

Following, then, are the results of that search.

Search results
John M. Gwin Comments
Conclusion
Name: Margaret A Huff
Age in 1860: 19
Birth Year: abt 1841
Birthplace: Virginia
Home in 1860: English River, Washington, Iowa
Household Members:
Anna Huff 52
Margaret A Huff 19
It's clearly not this first Margaret, because:

she was born in Virginia;

she's not living with a husband but rather with her mother of the same name; therefore Huff, not Gwin, is her maiden name.

OK, you get the idea.

NO
Margaret Fulton English River, Washington, IA 19 abt 1841 Ohio
The Fulton one's out, too--she was born in Ohio and is also living with her parents of the same last name.
NO
Margaret Figgins English River,
Washington, IA
19 abt 1841 Ohio
And so for the third as well--Figgins. Thus endeth the locals.
NO
Clinkinbeard, Fich, France, Ludwick, Evans, Rup, Cornick, Robinson, Brennan, Cunningham, Gholdson, Lortz, Wilson, Stephens, Berry, Vicroy, Smalley, Vance, Stoner, Kincaid, Pruit, Wright, Vance, etc., etc.
And so we started looking in other Iowa counties. While many were born in Iowa, we had basically the same results for each of the Margarets with these last names.
NO
J. D. and Margaret Haughtelin of Panora, Guthrie Co., IA But here is a young couple who fit in every way. We'll check them out in later censuses and see where her parents were born, etc., to get a better idea.
MAYBE
Michael (b. Ireland) and Margaret Trace of Tipton, Cedar Co., IA
Here's another, though she's a year younger than we'd like. We'll check them out in later censuses, too.
MAYBE
Valentine and Margaret Lambert of Iowa Twp., Cedar Co., IA Here's another, though she's a year older than we'd like. We'll check them out in later censuses as well. MAYBE
Thomas G. and Margaret E. Lewis of Adel, Dallas Co., IA She's a year younger, but we'll check.
MAYBE
Larsing and Margaret Mitchell of Benton, Des Moines Co., IA She's a year older, but we'll check. MAYBE
Francis and Margaret Hewitt of Davenpost, Scott Co., IA She's a year younger, but we'll check. MAYBE

B--this small marker is set beside and to the left of the Dunn marker and reads "Father, J. H. Dunn, 1835-1923";
C--next is the small marker of Caroline Gwin Dunn which simply states "Mother" (however, I saw the  name  "C. C. Dunn" in the office copy of the cemetery directory that led  me to this plot, and I'm sure this is her grave);
D--finally is the stone for  Alvin W. Joyce (9 Feb 1873 -  1 May 1933)  and his wife Maude (8 Dec 1871 - 17 Jan 1957), the latter of whom I'm now convinced is the youngest daughter of John and Caroline.

BINGO! On a hunch that Caroline, last seen at age 16 living at home, would be married and living near her parents, I did an Ancestry.com search of the 1870 census of Stanton/Miami/Kansas for any female by the first name of Caroline. There were only three, and this one is
(1) ten years older than our Caroline was in 1860,
(2) b. in Iowa, and
(3) living only 3 doors from her parents and 2 from her brother! Further,  according to the 1880 census, she is
(4) the daughter of parents born in Tennessee and Kentucky, respectively!

No, this doesn't prove she's our Caroline, but I am personally convinced this is she. If so, then we know her middle initial and the names and dates of birth of three of her children.

Aha! Caroline reports here that she only had three kids, all of whom are still alive. An Edgar, age 1, was present in the home in 1880, whom they reported to be their son.
