Birthing Emergencies:
It is important to remember that dogs and cats have been having puppies and kittens for hundreds of years. Even though it maybe frightening, the majority of births occur without any problems!
IF YOU SEE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING EVENTS, YOU SHOULD CONTACT OUR HOSPITAL RIGHT AWAY!
Gestation (length of pregnancy): Puppies and kittens can be born between 57-72 days from the breeding date. The average time for delivery is 63-65 days. If it has been longer than 68 days, we need to examine your pet.
Discharge from the vulva: Watery discharge (breaking water): the puppies/kittens should be born in the next few hours. Watch for signs of labor (abdominal contractions, labored breathing, etc..) If you see any bloody discharge or brownish/green discharge, you should call the hospital immediately.
Hard Labor (strong abdominal contractions) for 30 minutes with no presentation of a fetus...call the hospital immediately.
Weak labor which fails to produce a fetus in 2-3 hours...call the hospital immediately.
Dogs: Four hours since last delivery of puppy, and pet still has contractions...call the hospital immediately.
Cats: 24 hours can pass in between delivery of kittens. If your pet continues to have contractions and produces no kitten...please call us immediately.
