Graphics and Photography

Java

One of my interests is learning how to use Java effectively. JavaPage.html is my "test bed" page for some of the java programs I have "played" with.

Graphics

Repeating geometric patterns have always drawn my interest. The art of M. C. Escher with his repeating designs makes a person wonder how he can produce such work. In helping to prepare some graphics for Dr. Patrick Morandi, New Mexico State University to use in one of his math classes, I became interested in the fish pattern and how it could be reproduced from one single square. After many attempts, I found a way to rotate the single square around it's own corner and reproduce half of the pattern. Then by rotating the same single square around the opposite corner, the other half of the design can be reproduced. This is illustarated in the fish.html page. This is a 357 kb file so it takes some time to download.

The pattern can be generated by rotating a single square at two of its opposite corners. My goal is to find out if I can generate different patterns using the same technique as I used on the fish, but with digital images. The results of my first attempt are shown in girl.html. This was done with a "stock" photograph. My ultimate goal is to generate more patterns using images from my own photographic efforts. That sets a goal for my photography, finding the right model willing to pose in a position so the picture can be used for the first single square.

Photography

My first love in photography is "people pictures" but do not have any with model releases for use on the web. I will show a couple of examples of my scenic photography. The first picture is titled "The Organ Mountainis at Sunset". This is a 171 kb file so it will take some time to download. This was taken with the "old fashioned" N50 Nikon 35mm camera using color print film. The second example is a Christmas cactus. It was taken with a Fuji MX1200 digital camera on Christmas day, 1999. The file size is 408 kb. . Both of these pictures are copyrighted and may not be used for any purpose without my written persmission.
