Useful Links

There are a lot of good lepidoptera-related sites out there on the internet. Some of them are extremely useful, and others consist of endless lists of species names that reside in some locked cabinet in someone's basement. Others are nothing more than commercial sites where people sell insect specimens. Here are some of the best informational sites I've found.

The Moths of Southeastern Arizona is a great reference for the moth fauna found in the Southwest. Lots and lots of pictures to help ID just about any moth in the covered area. It's maintained by Bruce Walsh, who invited me on my first trip to Pena Blanca, and is a hell of a guy.

SE Arizona Butterflies is the companion site to Bruce's moth site.

Large and Showy Moths of North America is a good site that has lots of photography, and it also contains many links to other sites. Bill Oehlkew (that name is about as bad as ours... pronounced "Oakey") runs "The World's Largest Saturniidae Site" as a pay site. If you are into Saturniids it is worth the one time fee.

Kirby Wolfe's Saturnid Collection is a photographic site with outstanding photography of some of the most incredible moths from around the world. It is hosted by Insectcompany, along with Oelkew's site.

Butterfly and Moth Lifecycles contains mucho information and links. Good site.

TexInsecta.com is a great site administered by Robert jr. and Robert III Nuelle of Houston, Tx. They have some great collecting info on it and it's a good source of data for SE Texas. Also listed are links to some other good stuff.

InsectNet.com has about the only "message board" type forums I've found on the net for bug collectors. There forum subdivisions for just about everything entomological. There is a lot to learn from the discussion boards, but at times some threads can seem kind of tedious... there is a lot of commercial trading going on here too.

BioQuip is the standard source of supply for collecting equipment. They sell a LOT of good stuff (their collapsible nets are outstanding) but as in any other specialized market niche, they are very proud (i.e. $$$) of their stuff.
