not just bugs...

There is always something interesting to see

Tiger Salamander at Harshaw, Arizona.

When you're out goofing around at night in the summer, you're likely to encounter all sorts of creatures besides bugs.

I've seen many snakes, birds, bats, spiders, illegal aliens, deer, fox, drunks, coyote, and unidentified eyes shining back at me from the distance. Other collectors I know have had run-ins with bears, skunks, coati-mundis, and disbelieving sheriff's deputies. The most fun (not really) is when a couple of deliverance-types roll up in a beater pickup in the middle of the night and need to know "Wut the hayell are you doin', boy?" I guess it's difficult for lots of folks to understand why a grown adult would rather be out chasing insects than sitting in a bar looking at football on the TV. I'm sure they'll get over it.

AT Box Canyon, a swarm of honey bees
swarmed in before dark and
balled up in a tree
that we had to walk under
