The C-5, one of the world's largest aircraft, has carried unusually large, heavy cargo since 1970. This plane can carry fully equipped, combat-ready troops and heavy equipment at jet speeds to anywhere in the world on short notice. In addition, it can land in its landing gear of 28 wheels on shorter, less than perfect landing sites. Having both front and rear cargo openings, the C-5 can be loaded and off-load at the same time. The "kneeling" landing gear system lowers these openings 10 feet to truck-bed height. The entire cargo floor has a roller system for rapid handling of palletized equipment so as many as 36 pallets can be loaded aboard in about 90 minutes.
The massive payload capability has been demonstrated in many historic missions including it's transport of nearly 2 million pounds of equipment to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska following the March 1989 oil spill. During Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations, along with other Air Force transport aircraft, the C-5 airlifted almost a half-million passengers and more than 577,000 tons of cargo. This included 15 air-portable hospitals and more than 5.000 medical personnel to run them.
Kit Pack's support of the Desert Shield and Desert storm was described in Colonel Michael Pazak's letter of 24 April 1991 where he stated "your performance in this critical period will not be forgotten!"
