Project DescriptionThe primary objective of the field school is to provide advanced training in the field techniques of archaeology. Students learn the basic and advanced field techniques through the excavation of the Joyce Well site, a 14th Century, 300 room pueblo and ball court. Students also learn the basics of archaeological survey, site recording, and mapping. The 1999 field season primarily focused on the clearing and excavation of a ball court and some plaza areas while the 2000 and 2001 seasons shifted emphasis to the excavation of several pueblo rooms and conducting further mapping of the site along with taking archaeomagnetic samples for dating.Project LocationThe site is located in the extreme southwest corner of New Mexico, just several miles from the Mexican border. The site, located on the picturesque Gray Ranch, is in a very remote location about 60 miles south of the nearest town of Lordsburg, New Mexico. Nearest airports are in Tucson, Arizona or El Paso, Texas.AccommodationsLiving conditions are primitive. La Frontera provides showers and bathroom facilities, but the location lacks running water and electricity.
