Pictures of Infamous Referees
This is the second pictorial story of the referees doing the annual Whole Enchilada Fiesta Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Anyone who wishes to add to the historical record of this tournament or any other event can contact Andrew Bristol at abristol47@msn.com and he will try to create a web page of significant events. You will need to send photos by email with appropriate captions that you would like to add. Click on the link in each sentence to see a visual portrayal of the statement.
This year Pat Switzer, 2006 LCSRA President, used his "HI TECH" SLR camera to get some great action shots. Here is Andres making a professional looking run down the touch line. Seth is feeling good about getting that corner signal and throw-in signal correct. That's good signal, too, Ismael, but get the flag untangled. Jorge has his flag on the correct side, towards the referee! Jose Briones is about to take off; look at him go! What is it Gloria, offside or a minor foul? Is this the handling the ball that she has called? Efrain and Emily had some fast moving games. Lisa didn't get to stand there very long. She had to move with the counter-attack. Doesn't look like this is your first drop ball. Hey, Cathy is he going to get the ball or not? He does not seem to be bothered by the one he just missed. What happened, Bill? Where is the throw-in? Good signal for direction. Bill is telling them it is fine to substitute. Matthew is very serious about how he does his game. Matthew and Tim are you two discussing the present game or how you did during your High School game?
We had the pleasure of having a couple of assessors (Larry Grimes and Larry Suzuki) come down from Albuquerque to help us improve our officiating. Who is Larry assessing on HN-08 and where are all the spectators? He doesn't look that mean. Even a local referee helped the two Larrys with some mentoring. I think that Robert gave some tips to Cathy. Larry Grimes is enlightening the Willmans is the finer application of positioning and signals.
Saturday was rainy and very cool, with luck we did not have any lightning strikes nearby so the games went on. When not doing a game we tried to stay dry under the tent, even though breaks were few and far between. There was plenty of food and drinks and then there was pizza for lunch each day. Other than the weather, few troubles happened. The Tournament Director, Michele Hollomon, and the Referee Coordinator, Andrew Bristol, worked out those few little problems that did occur.
We had even more help this year from the El Paso Referee Association and other visiting referees from around the state. Those that were able to make it from El Paso were Samantha and Sofia Andujo, Freddy Andrade, Victor Castro, Jose Contreras, Raul Flores, Sandra Hernandez, Jack Jaime, Javier Ramos, Jesus Gomez, Martha Rivas. New Mexico referees that helped were Kevin Bendtsen, Ed Burke, Alex Cabos, Chase Clark, Derrick Hulce, Rueben Martinez, Pete Mertens, Trish Mertens, Tia Mertens, and Max Sappenfield.
