Silver City Lions Club
Eyesight Assistance Program
Eye Van Screening in Silver City
5 May 2007
Was a great success
For many
years the Silver City Lions Club has responded to the admonishment delivered
to the Lions Club International by Helen Keller. Her short speach to
the Lions International so inspired the Lions Clubs that eye sight assistance
has been our major objective since 1925. To read her entire speech click
on her photograph.
The less fortunate citizens in Grant County and Southwestern New Mexico
who need eye sight exams or eye glasses receive assistance from the
Silver City Lions Club. Any child recommended by a school nurse and needing
help for eye examinations or glasses is given assistance by the Club
based upon their need. A special effort is made to contact private
schools to inform them on this program
.

Periodically the New Mexico Eye Van is brought to Silver City to provide
free eye screenings for all members of the community. It will be here for
two mini health fairs in 2008. In addition to screening the residents
of Grant County, this program has been provided by the Silver City Club for
residents in Catron County to the north, a quite rural area with no Lions
Club.
Screening have also been provided by the Silver City Club in Conjunction
with the Lordsburg Club in the rural Bootheel of New Mexico where medical
and eye services are not available Other Health services are provided in
conjunction with the eye screenings, including blood sugar screening for
diabetes.
The club participates in
Health Fairs and fund raisers for local and National organizations
that assist
those suffering from many
different diseases.
