Harry Jiron Memorial

Good Sportsmanship Award

Las Cruces Horseman's Association recognizes one of it's members with the Harry Jiron Memorial Good Sportsmanship Award each year. HARRY JIRON, one of the founders of LCHA, suffered a fatal heart attack while attending a gymkhana in the early 1970's. Chosen by a secret committee (appointed by the President) the recipient's name remains a secret until announced at the Year-end Awards Banquet. Honoring his memory, this award is presented to individuals who have shown the qualities or conduct of good sportsmanship, especially insistence on fair play accompanied by the capacity to win or lose gracefully, without arrogance in victory or whining in defeat. An overall good attitude, honesty, generosity, helpfulness, kindness, friendliness, respect for others and impartiality are all qualities that are included in being a good sportsman.
