The splinters on your lips
Make you hesitant to touch me
And the chipped paint where my heart should be
Makes me hesitant to let you
I have laughed like a child
And roared like a lion
I have loved and lost
Despised and driven away
I have stood firm like a red wood
Deeply rooted in my morals and beliefs
I have fought losing battles
And always found myself able to get back to my feet
I have been beaten by balled fists
And embraced by open arms
I have expected the former
And become suspicious of the latter
I have found my tears covered in rain
And my smile warmed by the summer sun
I used to be a real boy
If only you had known me then
