Poomse (POOM-sae):
A pattern of techniques used against an imaginary opponent. In some competitions, an athlete's poomse is scored and specific
moves are required, similar to the compulsory round in figure skating.

Taegeuk Il Jang   represents keon, the yang: positive energy, the beginning of Creation , and Heaven.

Taegeuk Yi Jang represents the taeTae signifies internal firmness and external softness. Such as peacefulness supported by inner strength.

Taegeuk Sam Jang   represents Ra, fire.  The heat and brilliance of Ra encourages the Taekwondoist to pursue training with both passion and intensity.

Taegeuk Sa Jang   represents Jin in the Taegeuk: thunder, which in turn signifies power and courage.

Taegeuk O Jang   represents Seon, the paradox of air: the might of a powerful wind and the weakness of still air, reflecting the strength and weakness within all things.

Taegeuk Yuk Jang represents Kam, water, it's incessant flow and softness.  While not irresistible at all times, it persists and carves canyons & valleys; reducing stone to grit.

Taegeuk Chil Jang   represents Kan, a mountain: solid, ponderous, firm and majestic, wise.

Taegeuk Pal Jang represents Kon in the Taegeuk: um and earth.  As yang is positive energy and the representation of heaven and origin of all things, so um, negative energy, represents earth, the opposite of heaven, and the end of all things.  Considering the cycle of mortal life, earthly energy is also a beginning.
