South Padre Island
Sand Castle Contest

The competition was on Friday & Saturday.
There was no one there on Sunday - it was very windy and rainy all day. Many of the sculptures were starting to fall apart on Sunday.

After it stopped raining we went out to see the sand castles.

It was amazing to see how the artist created the effect of a blanket over these two hugging figures.

Sea Turtle, Inc

We visited Sea Turtle, Inc. which was founded by Ila Loetscher in 1977 to aid and assist the protection of the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle.

Here is the link to their website.
They have lots of activities for kids and teachers.

This board demonstrates how many turtles get caught up in trash and mono filament fishing line.

Our tour guide and turtle researcher, Lucy Guillen, talks about all the various tanks of turtles.

This turtle really wants that leaf of lettuce!

The turtle had to have metal weights put on its shell so that it could swim.
