The Horse Ride
Neighbors know a lot of stories. This is one that my neighbor, Harlan Smith, told me about another neighbor and his horse. Harry Todd was a sewing machine repairman. He was a good repairman. Harry loved the west. He used to ride a horse from here (Hurley, NM) clear across country into California, just to cross the wild west years ago. On one trip he got caught in a blizzard. He was on his horse. The blizzard was so intense that it was as if the world had closed in around him and he didn't have any idea about directions. He didn't know where to go or what. Harry said, "I let the horse have the reins. After a period of time my horse pulled up to the front gate of a house. At the front gate which was closed, I couldn't get off the horse because I was frozen on the saddle. But that horse didn't give up. He let out such a scream that the people in the house heard him above the ball game they were listening to on the radio." Harry said: The people of the house came to rescue the horse, but found me frozen to the horse. They got me off the horse and took me inside to thaw me out and feed me. They took the horse to the barn and fed him and warmed him. The friendly people saved Harry's life and the horse. When Harry was ready to leave he thanked the people for saving his life. They replied, "Don't thank us friend, that horse of your's saved your life. We just came out when he called us."
Harlan told me that after Harry Todd got well, he gave the kind, but poor, people the very intelligent horse.
