Descendants of Thomas GREEN

Notes

James EVANS

James Evans ancestors seemed to have moved about a bit before re-settling in Warren County, NC.
A James Evans appears in the 1790 census as head of household with 9 family members in Warren County. By 1800, he was still the only Evans living in Warren County. By 1810, three Evans turn up in Warren County: Charles, who was previously in Orange County, Leven, and Matthew, but James is gone. In 1820, four Evans Heads of Households are now in Warren County: Archibald, Griffin, Joseph, and Richard. All of these Evans were Free People of Color and were never slaves. I have been under the opinion that if James Evans wasn't his father, then Archibald Evans was. It is still something I am puzzling on.

Penina "Penny" COPELAND

Nickname:<NICK> Penny

Louisa MANLEY

Louisa had 7 children, all of whom were dead by 1910.
Not sure if she was referring to children she had born, or all of James children, since do not know if she had any children between 1880 and 1900.

Louisa was previously married to Joseph Copeland of Halifax County.
COPELAND, JOE MANLY, LOUISA 31 Jan 1866 Halifax NC

Louisa said she was born in March 1850 in the 1900 Census, and her death certificate says she was 80 years old, in which case she would have been born about 1844. But the 1850 census says she was 13 years old at the time, which is probably closer to her actual age, which would make her born about 1837.

18. William Alexander GREEN

Also Known As:<_AKA> Alex Green
Possibly, the following pertains to this William Alexander Green, although there was a person with those initials living in the 1860 Warren Co. NC census, Pg.32, h/h #223, aged 16, with the family headed by W.H. Green. More research needs to be done to confirm the identity of this person:

Isabella UNKNOWN

in 1910 Census Bell Gree age 50 , shows had 9 children, 5 alive

Ann UNKNOWN

Married Name:<_MARNM> 1st wife of Pilate Green
Pilot married Julia/Judy Davis Williams by 1902, so Ann must have died by then.

Julia Jane DAVIS

Julia Davis was a young dark skinned African American who grew up in North Carolina just at the end of slavery times. She met and fell in love with Pilot Green, who lived one house from her family at the time. But due to Judy's mother's, Mary Ann, opposition to a relationship with a much lighter skinned person, Pilot who was also born a free person of color, she was not allowed to marry him. Also during that time, there were laws in the state that forbade marriages between free blacks and slaves, and this would have been something engrained in Mary Ann's thinking. Judy left home and married a much older man, Hubbard Williams, who was a former slave who also lived in the neighborhood. She & Hubbard stayed together and raised a large family until his death shortly after 1900. At about the same time, Pilot's wife, Ann, also died, thus clearing the way for Pilot and Judy to finally marry. They spent their final years together in Warren County.

Leroy Lovett ALSTON

LEROY LOVETT ALSTON was the son of ADAMINA ALSTON of Warren County,North Carolina.

William TONEY

This WILLIAM TONEY could possibly have been a son of MATTHEW TONEY and CELIA EVANS; or he was the brother of Matthew, named in the will of JOHN TONEY (written Aug.20, 1823, proved February 1825, Halifax Co.,NC, WB4/1). The Bondsman for William's marriage to JANE EVANS, was the same person, EDWARD GREEN, who was bondsman for JAMES EVANS and MARTHA GREEN. James Evans was Jane's brother, from all indications. Also, another small indication is that MARIAH TONEY, the daughter of WILLIAM, named one of her sons MATTHEW.
William also appears to have had an earlier marriage if he was the same person in the Census Records for 1830, but I have been unable to determine anything else about that one yet.

John Haywood CAUDLE

The family was inconsistent in the spelling of their last name. It is sometimes listed as CORDLE.

82. Betsy CAUDLE

Betsy Caudle was shown to have Consumption in the 1880 Census.

31. John EVANS

Married in Warren County 2/3/1858 - Bondsman: Hawood Cordle

33. Emily GREEN

**Emily may have been the mother of the two boys below also. Was she perhaps a daughter of SAMUEL GREEN, FCP, who was in the 1820, 1830 census? I believe the age of Samuel by 1830 he wasn't any older than 36 years old, and could very probably have been Emily's father.
EMILY GREEN appears to have been unmarried when she had her children, and judging from their ages were born during her time of Apprenticeship to John H.Hawkins. So, it wouldn't be too surprising if Hawkins was the father of at least some of these children.

A Henry Green married Nancy Hawkins, Dec. 20, 1858. Bond: James Green. Minister: N. A.Purefoy , in Warren Co. NC
However, in 1870 Census, Warrenton, NC, Pg.433,#71/72, this family’s age is too old for above mentioned Henry.

(Record of Estates, Warren Co.,NC, 1852-1868,Estates found in Court Records, Vol.4)
(Entry 890) HENRY GREEN and wife et al petitioned for a division, Nov. Ct.,1862. One-third of the land was allotted to Woodley Hawkins, one-third to Nancy Green (wife of Henry Green), and the remaining third was divided into four equal parts among Thomas Carter, Elizabeth Carter, Hawkins Carter, and Matthew Carter.

(Entry 556) Plummer Carter- HENRY GREEN, free person of color, was apptd. Gdn. of the orphans Matthew Carter and Hawkins Carter, Feb. Ct., 1863.

It is possible that this family is part of same a few houses away since the following circumstances:
Bondsman for Henry Green/Nancy Hawkins marriage was James Green. *James Green married Nancy Carter, Dec 24, 1847, Warren Co.NC Bond: Thos. Twitty

Here is rest of Families in neighborhood at that time:
1870 Warrenton, NC,(Ridgeway) Pg.431, #54/55:
James Green - 76 (b: 1794) B - Retired farmer - NC
Jennie “ - 56 (b: 1814) B - NC
Doctor “ (male) - 15 (b: 1855) B - NC
(the James Green who signed Henry’s bond?)

(Somebody Knows My Name, Marriages of Freed People in NC, County by County,)
Warren County- James Green married Ginney Christmas in 1822

(After close study with census and wills, the 1870 James & Jennie Green family look to be former slaves of various Green Family, who were freed at the end of the Civil War) But where does that leave both Henry Greens?

Matthew GUY

Matthew Guy disappears from the census records after 1860 in Warren County, North Carolina. It appears that the last child he and Sabrina Lowry Guy had was Theny Guy, born in 1864.

Also as note, MINS GUY was listed as the bondsman for Archibald Evans marriage to Lucretia Green, and found that GUY was married to THENY HAWKINS on Jan. 1, 1825 Warren Co. May be related to FRANCES HAWKINS, who was married to BENJAMIN COPELAND. It also is likely that Mins & Theny were the parents of Matthew Guy, judging from the naming of one of his children with the name of "Theny", which probably was short for Parthenia. In 1820, there was a DANIEL GUY, FCP, who I believe was probably the father of Mins Guy, in Warrenton Co,NC,Pg.7, as follows:
1- M= 14 1 -F= 26
1-M=26
1-M=45+

Other info on MINS GUY, was still alive on 7/19/1844, when he was Bondsman for the Marriage of Howell Chavis and Harriet Jones, in Granville Co.,NC.
