263. Lucy RODGERS

Mrs. Lucy Rodgers (Alston) was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Evans Rodgers. In 1920, she was joined in holy matrimony to Frank W. Williams and to this union three children were born; two, children, Mary and Martha, preceded her in death. Later, she married William Alston.One daughter, Mrs. Creola Marie Williams of Passaic, NJ survived at the time of Lucy's death.


265. Mary Ellen RODGERS

Mary Evans Rodgers was born 10/12/1908 in Warren County NC. She spent most of her life in NC and as a young woman married Walter Davis. Together they first lived in Greentown,then raised nine children. They were: Willie, b. 1930, Robert L.,b.1932, Betty, b.1934, Romeo, b.1935, Roger, b.1936, Doris, b.1938, Panthea, b.1940, Matilda, b.1944, and Brenda Ann, b.1945. She was widowed in 1949 when Walter died. Later she married James Edward Debnam (Nan), a cousin of Walter's, who was a widower and also had children from that marriage. Mary and Nan had one child together, Celestine, born 8/31/1951. In 1968, Nan became very ill and went to live with his children in Maryland, while Mary chose to live with her daughters in Boston,MA She spent the rest of her life in Boston with her extended family,until she died in 1994 from throat cancer. Mary was buried in Warren County NC where she had spent most of her life, at Spring Green Cemetery.


Walter Scott DAVIS

Walter Scott Davis was born 1/6/1906 in Warren County, NC. He was the son of Robert Davis who had been married at least 3 times. Walter had 12 siblings from these marriages.They were as follows: from Betty Hodges who was Walter's mother: Ivy Mae andRobert Garland Davis. From Emma Cheek: SallyWill, Percy,and Charlie King Davis. From Patty C. Davis: Virginia Lydia, Cleo Bernadine, Melvin, James, Macy,and Connie Davis. Walter attended college at A & T of North Carolina at Greensboro. He died at the age of 53 years on 10/1949.

JAMES EDWARD DEBNAM


James Edward Debnam was born July 23, 1908, son of the
late James and Isabelle Debnam. James attended public
schools in Warrenton, North Carolina. He joined St.
Matthew Baptist Church in North Carolina at an early
age. In 1928 he was married to the late Jessie Edna
Davis of Warrenton, NC. From this union nine children
were born; Rose B. Prewitt, Plummer Earl, Willie P.,
Bernard Leon, Ernestine Dancy, Larry, and kelly and
the late Joseph Debnam and Rossie Dunson.
James later married Mary Davis. A daughter Celestine
was born.
James Edward affectionately called NAN enjoyed playing
and watching baseball.
In 1972 James moved to Baltimore where he made many
friends. In 1979 his health began to fail and finally
on Saturday, September 25, 1982, he departed this life
at the Sinai Hospital in Baltimore at 5 A.M.
left to mourn their loss are his wife, five sons,
three daughters, 40 grandchildren and 30 great-
grandchildren, 1 brother, Robert Debnam, 2 sisters,
his twin Jessie Wright and Pearl Allen, 6 sisters-in-
laws; Alice,Dorothy, Carrie, Gladys, Enolliah and
Lillie Mae, 1 brother-in-law, James, 5 daughters-in-
law, 2 sons-in-law, nieces and nephews and a host of
relatives and friends.

Funeral held: Thursday, Sept. 30, 1982, 2:00 P.M.
at St. Zion Baptist Church, Liberia, NC
