| Throughout times, many composers have set the "Ave Maria" to music.
I dare say that the "Ave Maria" is probably the most used theme by composers
throughout times. This
listing will therefore never be complete. There are simply too many "Ave Maria"
compositions, and over time, probably more have been lost forever than
survived. |
| This website intends to be one of the more comprehensive listings of "Ave
Maria" songs available on the Web. The listed links, scores and MIDI-files can be a resource for vocalists, musicians and choirs wishing to expand their repertoires.
| This listing of composers is the result of an ongoing Web-search and files
found on the Internet are assumed to be in public domain for this
informational purpose. Please be aware that copyrights for commercial duplication and/or public performance of the work of contemporary composers might be reserved, either by the composer or the original publisher. Such copyrights would be in effect in the USA for all works published after 1923. Copyright laws may differ in your country. For this reason, any and all composers that I have not been able to find any time reference for; and those composers either known or assumed to be alive after 1923, have been included in the "contemporary" listing, unless the composition is dated 1923 or earlier.
|
| Many of the listed composers have only an Internet reference page listed,
without any additional information. If you have any additional
information (e.g. birth and/or death year), musical score (partiture,
spartiti), MIDI or other format
music files for these composers,
you are welcome to email them to me. I will post the information with appropriate
credit to the provider.
| MIDI-songs on the Web do not always have lyrics included. I may therefore not
always have
the correct lyrics to some of the songs. If you have an electronic version
of the song or a score where the lyrics are fitted with the music, please send me a copy,
or the link to such file on the Web and
I'll post it. | |
| Submissions of additional
links, composers and/or compositions are always welcome.
| Please, let me know if you find any errors or defective links. Be aware that some of the host sites may not allow you to download files from an outside link.
Usually, the URL of the home page of each host
site is provided so you can bypass this problem by searching that site.
| Some sites (e.g. www.classicalarchives.com) may require you to register before
you can download any files.

on songs entitled "Ave Maria": There are a number of songs and arias entitled "Ave Maria" that are not, in fact, settings of the traditional "Ave Maria" text. The most famous of these is Schubert's "Ellens Gesang III", Op. 52 No. 4 D.839; .../... Other composers who have written songs entitled "Ave Maria" but using other texts include:
While these are lovely songs they are not true Ave
Marias. | |||||||||||||||
| From another Site: * Pietro Mascagni did not actually compose an Ave Maria. What happened is that someone arranged the Intermezzo from his opera CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA as a vocal solo and set the Ave Maria text to it. This is probably the fourth most-performed Ave Maria out there, regardless of its strange provenance. | |||||||||||||||
| From a visitor: (Gamuto Niimi) Arcadelt's "Ave Maria" is an 18th or 19th century adaptation of his charming chanson "Nous voyons que les hommes" by a Frenchman. |
