Dear Readers,
More
milestones this summer with great nephew Zachary James Williams graduating from
highschool in Michigan.
Right: Graduate Zachary Williams
We
made a road trip the end of May to Prescott, Arizona to see Marilyn’s 17-year
old daughter Becki graduate from high school. She will attend the University
of Arizona in Tucson in the fall with her brother Ryan, who will be a sophomore.
Back at home while enjoying the roses blooming in the front garden, Marilyn fell
and fractured her collarbone. She was tested for bone density and has
osteoporosis, at age 46. The really good news is she only has to take a weekly
pill to stay on top of it along with her daily calcium. Marilyn is enjoying
another new puppy, a black Shar-Pei, that Ryan named Duke after Duke Ellington.
We do not know if he will exhibit any musical talents.
I celebrated my 68th birthday in June and I have to keep reminding myself, "Yes, you really are 68 years old." I have some ambitious plans and will tell you about them next issue. I always wanted to do take a river raft trip and about the only far-away-places I would really like to go see are the Great Wall of China like Martha Sweeney did this Spring and that ancient city in the mountains of Peru. However, my trips for the forseeable future will only be as far as Marilyn and Dick can accompany me.
I am looking forward to a relaxing lazy summer as Barb DeFeo assisted by Carol Stover have kindly consented to take on Doll Values. I am so pleased that this will free up more of my time to spend with the family. Barb will concentrate on the antique portion and Carol will help out with the modern portion this year. Barb would welcome your photos if you wish to share some of your collection with her for the book. You may contact her via email: janara@pacbell.net or you may write her, Barbara DeFeo, 863 Misty Meadow Ct., Chula Vista, CA, 91910. Barb has been a member of UFDC for many years, a collector and dealer and has published an antique newspaper in Southern California. Carol Stover can be contacted via email: User105697@aol.com or you can write her, Carol Stover, 81 E. Van Buren St. Chicago, IL, 60605. Carol has written the books on Ideal dolls with Judith Izen and her Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s was recently published by Collector Books. Because for family health reasons, I will not be attending any conventions for the foreseeable future. I strongly encourage you to share your outstanding doll finds with Barb and Carol. I am very grateful for their help with this; aren’t doll collectors some of the nicest people in your world?
Recently,
I was delighted to hear that the Tonner Doll Company purchased Effanbee Doll
Company. With Robert Tonner adding his talent to this venture, I was pleased to
see their new line already showing just how much fun these new dolls can be. We
take another look at Effanbee, old and new, in this issue starting with new for
2003, Ducky and Me on the cover of this issue. I just loved this one especially
with her towel that says "Patsy".
In
the "it’s a small world department," do you remember a few issues
back (#87) with the article on Shirley Temple Pastime Book? It had "A Story
about Yourself" and was filled in by Betty Jane Marquis, of Clinton, Iowa,
nine years old and she mentioned the names of several of her friends. Well one
of the girls mentioned in the book has contacted me with information on her
childhood friend who owned the book. I bring you an update on some of her
remembrances.
Also, this issue, we bring you a Patsy paperdoll by Sylvia Kleindist and a pattern by Lisa Bye to fit an 8-inch Kripplebush Kid doll. Lots of good stuff in the classifieds and lots of good letters from readers, including Earl’s Pearls from Earl Theaker, humble husband of his wife for over 50 years, Jean.
As the roses bloom in glorious shades of color, and the green leaves of the front shade tree sway in the wind, the sound of baby birds chirping for their food, I look out my office window at the shimmering purple Florida (floor-rita) mountains to the south and I am hoping it remains peaceful, calm and serene at my New Mexico home. I hope your summertime is just as blissful. Enjoy your family, friends, and dolls.
Cheers, Patsy Moyer
