Quote from a review written by the noted photographer, Wil Hanson-

"I've always been interested in those people who suddenly make a 90-degree switch in their vocations - psychiatrists who become pastry chefs - that sort of thing.

Painters change direction frequently; if they don't, they usually stagnate. But these changes are generally spread over a longish period of time and become apparent gradually. So when Paul Wilson suddenly, as if overnight, switched from painting fine, objective landscapes to even finer, fully-realized abstractions, I wanted to find out how this dramatic change came about.

Of course, for him it didn't happen overnight. He had been making abstracts for some time. But only privately. So when his first show of exclusively abstract paintings opened, the sensation was that of an abrupt shift.

Here's where it became, quite literally, an act of personal courage. Paul was known and respected for painting one way. His sudden change, without any gradual modifiers, had the potential of calling up all sorts of demons. Public display means being open to public criticism. Act two has to be better than act one.

Fortunately in his case it was. His paintings are imaginative, finely crafted, beautiful."
