The little town of White Oaks, New Mexico is the place to be on Saturday June 3th for the eleven annual Miner’s Day Celebration, always held on the first Saturday in June.

The Miners’ Home Musuem will be open for tours as well as the Miners’ Toolshed Museum and the White Oaks Schoolhouse Museum. Artists and crafters will have booths in downtown White Oaks. The White Oaks Post Office Station will be open to send off your letters with a special U.S. Postal Service Cancellation Stamp designed by event founder Ruth Birdsong (who wears many hats throughout the day).

This year the big parade will be at 10:00 am. The Lincoln County Out-Riders will be carrying our flag and leading the way. Those interested in being in the parade should line up at the north end of White Oaks at 9:30 am. 2006 Grand Marshall is Harlen Webb, who is a well know old time saddle maker and has been a resident of White Oaks for many years.

One can see Smokey Bear, cowboys, horses and buggies, children in turn-of-the-century costumes and participants are asked to join in the fun and dress in period costumes.

The annual children’s costume event will be judged after the parade ends at the stage area and awards will be given out then. First prize is $25.00, second prize is $10.00, and third prize is $5.00. Birdsong’s Shop also gives a prize to each contestant who enters.

Stinkbug Races: Bring your own stinkbugs and paint racing stripes on them for the famous rough-and-tumble race. Stinkbugs, for those who don’t know, are the black beetle bugs or dung bugs. A good place to find them is in a horse lot.

The Kiddies Korral is back again, this is where those little ones can have a real good time. Betty’s Border Collies will be doing their tricks for you all to see.

Ruth Birdsong’s performance as Madam Varnish is not to be missed. After that the Madam Varnish contest will be entertaining at 11:00 pm. The chosen lady will be awarded a banner and a bouquet of flowers and she will reign until next year when another lucky lady will be honored. The Temperance Ladies will be there also so one must watch their Ps and Qs.

Then at high noon is the famous Old West Shoot Out. Dirty Dave and his outlaw bunch are on the prowl and will be shooting it out with the local constable and his boys.

"Voices from the Past" returns with live portrayals of early settlers at the mock Cedervale Cemetary. Different folks are protrayed each year.

This year we are looking at some new additions: a Childrens’ Ore Car Races, which will be done by the Camp Sierra Blanca Boys. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be there to do face painting. Elizabeth Sinkovitz will be doing "The Life of Elizabeth Garrett", the writter of out state song "Oh Fair New Mexico".

The Libation Station will be open all day, so get on your glad rags and join in the fun.

White Oaks Miner’s Day is sponsored by H.O.M.E., (House Of Memories Echoes), Birdsong’s Gift Shop in White Oaks, Lincoln County Lodgers Tax, Wal-Mart in Ruidoso Downs, City Bank New Mexico, Wells Fargo Bank, Lincoln County Rural Tourism Council, New Mexico State Monuments, REDTT, Lincoln County Out-Riders and Sierria Blanca Brewery.
