Synopsis:
Intended as light action adventure MOW, this story features a team of four covert mission specialists, two men and two women, who have been assembled to transport a contraband shipment across Mexico in a turbine-powered experimental super-truck which has a computer personality called Buttercup. The romance and violence are both light, and played for humor, as they are pursued by a number of different antagonists.
Two Russian sailors wait on a boat off the coast of Cuba, with a package they are to deliver, a large trunk. A fast boat comes alongside, and in a flurry of gunfire, the package is snatched and rushed away into the night. At a rural California airport, beautiful redhead sailplane pilot Alexandra Peterson receives a message. In a rough biker bar popular with Marines near Quantico, rock-jawed, lean burrhead Melvin Hardy is interrupted by messenger Madrid, a small but tough Indian in a white linen suit, who gives him a message on a card. In a college classroom for computer mathematics, a pretty coed brings a message to young bachelor professor Dr. Bucky Tyler. They all meet in an office in San Francisco, with exotic young Mexican executive Victoria, who informs them she is in charge of a mission to transport a package across Mexico, one for which everyone who knows about it is looking.
The four of them do not get along quickly, but they embark on the trip. They parachute onto an island, pick up the package in a small plane, fly it to the coast, and are almost shot down by a pair of old P-51's. They rendevous with Bucky's vehicle, which looks like a big clunky RV, but which soon sheds its outer shape to become a small high-powered and armored all-terrain vehicle. With experimental engine and computers Bucky built on government contracts that got cancelled, it is a super-truck with another surprise. It has a lot of communication and sensory equipment which are controlled by a computer personality, whom Bucky calls Buttercup. She is a wisecracking hot-shot with an impressive bag of high-tech tricks.
They are pursued principally by a US Federal agent named Cologna, and his assistants, geeky Agent Miller and edgy Chicana Agent Garcia. They join forces with Mexican intelligence commander J.P.Vargas, and his team, sexy Elodia and eager hatchet-man Captain Moreno. Through several action and comic scenes, they make their way across Mexico, pursued by Mexican jeeps, a gang of militant Mexican revolutionaries, a black unmarked Cobra gunship, and a team of US Army all-terrain armored vehicles in Arizona.
The package is dropped off, and the supertruck is destroyed, but not before pulling out the attache case in which Buttercup resides. Some have become friends forever, and some enemies, and we know they will meet again, on some new adventure, with promises to keep, and debts to pay. Bucky buys an old B-26, and Buttercup happily announces that she is going to learn to fly.
