May 3 and 4, 2000

On May 3 the Dutch people celebrate the day Holland was liberated at the end of World War II. This year I created a memorial rainbow in memory of my dear friend the late Bert Schierbeek, the poet. Bert ran an underground newspaper during the occupation. Bert's widow stood with me watching the rainbow. We both could hear Bert's laughter through the rainbow.

On May 4 another rainbow was created in celebration of Independence Day. On this day the Dutch celebrate freedom.

Both rainbows were created in front of the Westercerk in conjunction with the Amsterdam Fire Department. (thank you Christopher Leather for making the Amsterdam rainbows real)
