Counterfeit Report: Still More Michael Jordan rookie card Fakes Surface
on eBay
Another in a long line of poor
quality 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan RC fakes, this one began
showing up at the Beckett Grading Services offices in mass
quantities in April 2002.
Within a short time period, multiple orders were submitted to BGS every
single day containing copies of this card. Although of very inferior
quality, the counterfeit obviously fooled countless online auction
bidders. The style of this version is a typical photocopy, meaning every
design element was simply copied without any improvements.
The photo itself is extremely grainy, and the Fleer Premier logo is
about as fuzzy and indistinct as any MJ fake. The outer black border
lines are again comprised entirely of print dots.
On the back of the card, the printing and the logos are all fuzzy, as
though printed on an ink-jet home printer. The ® and © logos are
completely illegible, while the NBAPA wording on the bottom right is
also unreadable.
Another major flaw this version shares with other Michael Jordan
counterfeits is the Chicago Bulls logo. Looking at the eyes of
the bull, the real card should clearly show the whites of each eye, but
on this fake, the left eye of the bull is almost completely filled in
with blue ink.
The counterfeit card also weighs slightly less than normal (1.63 grams
compared to 1.86 grams).
It's a shame to see so many collectors getting ripped off by these
fakes, so be careful out there and always use a discerning eye,
especially if something seems too good to be true.

These are 300 dpi scans. The one on the
left is fake, and the one on the right is real. You can tell by the
black line above and below the yellow, the one on the left has more
blurr to it the one on the right has a more clear black line with no
bluring.
These are 600 dpi scans, so
they are blown up quite a bit. Notice that you can actually read the
text on the real card (the one on the right), while the fake's text is
legible, without magnifacation its tough to read the lettering but some
are so poorly printed it it easy to tell.
With
the development of technology in the print world, counterfeit
cards are getting better every day. As a buyer of raw (ungraded)
cards in today’s card market there are a few things you must
know. First, you must do your research on current counterfeit
cards. Knowing what to look for is important. Second, an
important piece of equipment that every collector should have at
his or her side is a powerful magnifier, at least 10x
magnification. With this you will be able to effectively detect
the subtle differences in the printing of counterfeits.
Most of today’s counterfeit cards are sold at shows and as
auctions on eBay. If a buyer is not aware of what to look for on
the card he or she wants to buy, the purchase could be an unwise
investment. The old standard of caveat emptor or buyer beware is
more needed than ever. This is advice that should be heeded by
all who don’t want to get burned.

1986-87
Fleer Michael Jordan #57 (Rookie Card)
|
This
month, we are presenting Michael Jordan’s RC. We don’t want
to alert the counterfeiters to all their mistakes so we will
show you the most obvious ones.
On the front of the FLEER PREMIER red crown examine the red
crown logo. In Example 1, you can see in the blow-up that the
crown is printed in a dot matrix pattern. In Example 2, you see
only the PREMIER is in the dot matrix pattern and the red crown
is solid. Example 3 is from the genuine card. Notice that on the
real card both the crown and the PREMIER are solid.

The second part of the card we are going to examine is the NBA
product logo on the back of the Jordan rookie. In Example 4 we
see the entire logo is in a dot matrix pattern. Example 5
reveals the ® in the NBA product logo to be indecipherable.
Example 6 shows us a genuine logo.
The final part of this card we will examine is the NBA
basketball logo. Example 7 shows us the words around and in the
ball are all unidentifiable. It also reveals the ball as a solid
blue dot; the lines that distinguish it as a basketball have
disappeared. We show you in Example 8 the genuine logo.
