El Paso Del Norte Lions Club's first charter night was February 12, 1955. The Club is in District 2T3 of Lions Clubs International. The principal activity of the Club is raising funds to use for charitable purposes such as providing transportation for children to the Texas Lions' Camp for Handicapped and Diabetic Children located at Kerrville Texas. The Club also supports the Lions Southwest Eye Health Foundation, Hearing and Speech Clinic Examinations, varied Youth activities including, but not limited to, scholarship awards, as well as seasonal charitable activities. Funds are raised by an annual golf tournament, donations, and the Club's Casino Night Program, which is contracted out to various organizations. The Fourth of July Independence Day Holiday is commemorated each year by a "people's parade" which was started by the Del Norte Lions Club for East El Paso in 1980, where everyone is invited to be a part of the festivities by walking along with the marching bands and flags. The Parade Marshal is always Uncle Sam in costume and the "Spirit of 76" marchers are always with him. The Club's Casino Night Program is conducted using a large trailer holding 24 blackjack tables, 2 dice (craps) tables and a roulette wheel, which is transported to the scene of the program and quickly set up. The club members act as dealers and play money is used by the players. At the end of the evening an auction is held, using the play money to bid for prizes obtained by the sponsor. |
