Deming Luna Mimbres Museum - One of the best museums you will
find in
this part of the country. It has a little bit of everything. We call
it our little Smithsonian. There is an extensive collection of
Indian pottery, a collection of over 2500 bells, geodes, quilts, doll room,
transportation wing and on and on and on. There are displays of Fort
Cummins, Camp Cody and the Deming Air Base that was here in WWII.
St. Clair Vineyards - They have wine tasting every afternoon. On Saturdays they
give tours of the plant. A wine fest is held each October. A lot of
fun had by all.
Gila Cliff Dwellings - The cliff dwellings are about 95 miles
away. They are from the Anazasi era. Probably around the years of
1250 AD. They will actually let you walk right up inside the dwellings.
Columbus - This is a little town about 30 miles south of Deming.
It is the only place in the US that has been invaded by a foreign country.
Pancho
Villa raided Columbus coming up out of Mexico March 9, 1916.
Columbus has 2 museums and the Pancho Villa State Park is located
there. The park is located on the grounds of Camp Furlong.
Camp Furlong is the location of the first military air base in the US.
Rockhound State Park - The park is located at the base of the Florida
Mountains southeast of Deming just a few miles away. This is one state
park where you can actually pick up things and take them out with you.
Many treasured rocks have been found and taken back home. There is a brand
new visitor center there now.
City of Rocks State Park - A very interesting place to visit about 23
miles north of town. There are huge rocks formed by volcanoes, rain and
wind many years ago. They also have a cactus garden and visitor center.
Los Palomas, Mexico - This is a small Mexican town located 33 miles
south. There is shopping, dentist, eye doctors and many drug stores
located there.
Rio Mimbres Golf Course - A city owned 18 hole golf course is located
adjacent to the park and is open to the public.
The Catwalk - A beautiful park with a mile long metal walkway attached
to the side of Whitewater Canyon and over Whitewater River. The
Catwalk name came from miners in 1889 who constructed a 4-inch pipeline between
sheer rock walls to carry water three miles from a mining site to the mill and
town of Graham. You can watch the Whitewater River
running down below you and see the trout swimming.
