The Mill at Graham

Just north of Glenwood which is located 60 miles north, on Hwy. 180, of Silver City is located the historic "Catwalk." Graham, also know as Whitewater, which was built here in 1993 for milling ore. Lets go back in time.

In 1879 rich gold and silver deposits were discovered in the mountains above Whitewater Canyon. Several mines were developed including he Confidence, Bluebird, Blackbird and Redbird. Ore from these mines was hauled in wagons to the mill also called Whitewater which was located at the mouth of the Canyon.

Water, to opeate the electric generator at the mill and to meet the needs of the 200 towns-people was obtained by constructing in 1893 a 4-inch pipeline that reached about 3 miles up the Canyon. In 1897, additional water was required and an 18 inch popeline was built.

Ore from the nearby mines was processed at the mill which was built in 1893 and had a capacity of 75 tons per day. Because of inadequate site processing methods the mill closed down in 1913 although the mines were worked from their discovery in 1889 until 1942.

Come joing me in a picture tour of Whitewater canyon and see the rugged area where this catwalk exists.
