The Chiricahua Mountains were the homeland of the Chiricahua Appaches.
From these mountains the Apaches, led by Cochise and Geronimo, launched
attacks against the tide of pioneers for more than 25 years.
About 15 miles north of Douglas, Arizona (which is located
in southeastern part of the state) Geronimo, last Apache Chieftian
and Nachite with their followers surrendered September 6th, 1886 to
General Nelson A. Miles. The surrender of Geronimo in Skeleton Canyon
on that historic day, forever ended Indian warfare in the United States.
