In 1963, an earthen dam was constructed upon the waters of Sapillo Creek
and Lake Roberts came into existence. An Emerald of the Gila Forest and
home to almost every creature that inhabits the wilderness and it has
proven to be a vital and welcome man-made addition to this rugged and
sometimes arid country. It is located about 20 miles north of Silver City
and proven to be a heaven for recreation and relaxation. It has a surface
area of approximately 70 acres, 35 feet maximum depth, and a land drainage
area of approximately 87 miles. There are two courtesy docks, five
restrooms, bear-proof trash cans, and turn-around and boat launch area.
There are two campgrounds associated with Lake Roberts both located on a
hilltop above it and located among Ponderosa and juniper trees. Some sites
overlook the lake. The sites are widely spaced and
pull-through sites will accommodate large RVs. There is approximately 36
sites available, all have BBQ Pits, Tables, and restrooms are available
nearby.
Lake Roberts is a favorite fishing "hole" where Lake Trout (stocked)
and catfish entice the fisherman. Also another man made lake which is located
about 18 miles south of Roberts has in addition to trout and catfish,
Crappie and Bluegills. Sitting at lakeside, line in water, the clear starry
nights, and listening to the night sounds of the forest, you can really see
why they call New Mexico "The Land of Enchantment."
Former Supreme Court Justice William 0. Douglas may have captured the
feeling when he said, "Wilderness helped preserve man's capacity for
wonder ... the power to feel, if not see, the miracles of life, of beauty,
and of harmony around us." The Gila Wilderness was established in 1924 as
the first designated wilderness in the country.
