And so, after 6 Rail Fence quilts, I thought I was ready for the big time. "I shall make a sampler, with a different pieced star in each block." ... A sampler of jewel-tones, sashed with black ( I had visioned a quilt made of star-blocks ... that idea ended when I tried to piece an 8- pointed star and ended up with a "volcano" in the middle). My mother volunteered to put the borders on, and she also decided that I should have "trademark" — a strip of cording between the middle and the borders.

That worked fine, until Mama tried to turn the corner with that cording. She began to cuss, and cussed the whole time, but she did it. She decided, however, that CORDING would NOT be my "trademark." Since then, I ALWAYS put a narrow "accent strip" (which has come to be known amongst my friends as a "Sarah-strip") between the "body" of the quilt and the borders.
