Aurora Borealis
Another in the series of Kaleidoscope quilts. The photograph
truly does not do this quilt justice. I was laying the blocks out on
the living room floor, trying to decide on a "set-together" color, when
Hairy-Legger #1 (by 15 minutes) Mark wandered by for a quick weekend
visit while he was in college here at NMSU. "OOOHHH," he said. I
explained that I was looking for a set-together. Mark (who had showed
NO interest in my quilting for over 3 years) agreed that the black I had
planned made it dull. And so, he just marched himself into my bedroom,
raided my stash, and came up with the PERFECT bright-navy -- and then
set about re-arranging the blocks so they washed together just right,
and then grabbed up the scraps from cutting the triangles off, and
designed the border.
Mark started college at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and has
seen the Northern Lights. He mentioned them as we spent that fun
afternoon together. A good friend and fellow retreater insisted on
hand-quilting this one -- it was Mark's (not Mark and Tammy's -- they
got other, community, presents) wedding present.
