This event is sponsored by the Realistic Equine Sculpture Society and is open to all artists.
The
Realistic Equine Sculpture Society's mission statement is to encourage excellence in
realistic equine sculpture and associated artistry, promote an interactive
education oriented professional community and broaden artistic opportunities
through exhibitions, events, education, demonstration and critique.
Classes Offered:
1) Finish Class
2) Sculpture Class
3) Combined Finish & Sculpture Class
Class limits and Entry Fees:
Each artist may enter 2 pieces in each class.
Entry fee is $5.00
per piece.
Signed and dated entry forms and fees may be mailed (to be
received by September 30, 2006).
Entry forms and fees may also be delivered in person at the
event.
Artists may only enter their own work. However, proxy showing in permitted if the artist is unable to attend the event. For entrants exhibiting by proxy, all responsibilities, arrangements and liabilities beyond the scope of the “RESS Challenge Class at El Paso Equine Art” rest between the artist and the proxy agent. For work no longer owned by the artist, all responsibilities, arrangements and liabilities beyond the scope of the “RESS Challenge Class at El Paso Equine Art” rest between the artist and the owner. Directors and Officers of RESS are permitted to enter to receive a critique of their piece(s), however, these pieces will not be eligible for placing or awards.
All work must be completed entirely by the artist. No collaborations are allowed.
The RESS Challenge hosts and/or judge reserve the right to reject any piece that is not received by the deadline for entry, arrives in poor, damaged, or any other condition which makes the piece unsuitable for exhibition, or is not truthful to the description at stated on the entry form.Pieces must be delivered by the artist or agent to the show hall by 8:30 am Saturday, October 7, 2006. The artist or agent is required to set up the entries under the supervision of the RESS Challenge hosts and/or judge. Pieces will not be eligible to show in the El Paso Equine Art Model Show on Saturday, October 7, 2006, and will be required to stay in the designated area for the duration of the event. The judge will be doing the judging throughout the course of the day on Saturday, October 7, 2006.
Pieces must be set up no later than 8:30 am on Saturday, October 7, 2006. (The show hall opens at 7:30 am). Artists are responsible for storing their own packing materials. Pieces not set up by the deadline may be disqualified. Pieces will be judged by Jacquie Fernandez (or any guest judge) starting at 8:30 am and finishing by 4:30 pm. The exhibited pieces will be available for public viewing during the show hours.
Artists or agents are responsible for picking up the entries between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm on Saturday, October 7, 2006, at the showhall in the Radisson Suites Hotel, El Paso, TX. RESS and the RESS Challenge host are not responsible for pieces left after 5:30pm.
Scoring:
Pieces will be given a numerical score (from 0-5) with 0 being not exhibited or not present and 5 being excellent, on a list of criteria. Score sheets will be distributed to the artist or designated agent at the show, and are not made available for public viewing.
Pieces will be evaluated on the following criteria:
For the Finish Class: Only the finishwork will be evaluated, therefore any anatomical or biomechanical elements will be disregarded. Finish may be of any technique or medium, including but not limited to oils, acrylics, pastels, glaze, ink, pencil or other permanent media. The finish will be judged on realistic portrayal and accurate reproduction of equine color and pattern within the context and limitations of the medium. The finish must be appropriate to the stated color and breed. Effectiveness of shading, skill and technical aspects of the medium and techniques, artistic expression, believability, compatibility of elements and composition and design.
For the Sculpture Class: Realistic portrayal and accuracy of the equine anatomy and biomechanics as rendered in three-dimensional form of a tangible and permanent media. Sculptures may be full body, bust, or bas-relief. Sculptures must be either entirely original (from scratch) by the artist or customized from an existing body that is no longer recognizable as the original body in any way, without violating any rights retained by the original artist. Collaborative sculpture work is prohibited.
For the Combined Finish & Sculpture class: Eligible "combined" entries are the combination of the previous two categories onto one piece, all by the same artist. Both the sculpture and finishwork must be consistent to the eligibility qualifications. Collaborative work as well as minor, moderate, painted-only, etc customs are prohibited in the Combined Challenge.
Entered pieces must be permanent artwork, devoid of removable and interchangeable components. All elements must be the original creation of the artist with the integration of pre-made props, parts or kits prohibited. The exceptions are removable bases either original to the edition or piece.
Awards:
Rosettes for 1st , 2nd, and three Honorable Mentions.
A people’s choice award will be voted on by El Paso Equine Art Show participants and awarded by 4:30 pm on Saturday, October 7, 2006.All awards distributed at this event are awarded to and the sole possession of the artists and not the agent or owner.

I understand and agree by participation in the RESS Challenge Classes at El Paso Equine Art Show and all accompanying activities including but not limited to: seminars, socializing, setting up & breaking down of displays and exhibits can be hazardous and I voluntarily participate with the knowledge of the dangers involved and hereby agree to accept any and all risks of injury, death, theft, damage or destruction of personal property.
In
consideration for being able to participate in the “RESS Challenge Classes”
and use of the facilities at the Radisson Suites Hotel, I hereby agree that
I, my heirs, my distributes, guardians, legal representatives and assignees will
not make a claim against, sue, attach property of, or prosecute the El Paso
Equine Art Show,
the event hosts, RESS, judges, clinicians, the Radisson Suites Hotel or
it’s landlord, and their officers, representatives, assignees, agents and
employees for any claim I now have or may hereafter have for death, injury,
theft, property damage or destruction resulting from my participation and use of
facilities at the Radisson Suites Hotel, whether caused by my acts of
omission or negligence or any one else’s.
In addition, I will, at my own expense, obtain insurance coverage for my
property as I solely deem necessary or appropriate and it is also understood
that this insurance shall be primary.
To
the fullest extent permitted by the law, I shall defend, indemnify and hold
harmless the El Paso Equine Art Show, event hosts, RESS, judges, clinicians, landlord and
their officers, representatives, agents and employees for and against all
claims, damages, losses, expenses and liabilities of any kind, including but not
limited to attorney’s fees, in any way arising out of or in connection with my
activities under this agreement. This
indemnify shall apply regardless of any active and or passive negligent act or
omission of the El Paso Equine Art Show, event hosts, RESS, judges, clinicians, or
Radisson Suites Hotel landlord and their officers, representatives, assignees,
agents and employees.
I have
carefully read this agreement and release and fully understand its
contents. I am aware
that this is a release of liability, a waiver of legal rights and contract
between myself, the event hosts, RESS, Judges, clinicians, Radisson Suites
Hotel, and the officers, representatives, assignees, agents, and employees , and
signed it of my own free will. I further acknowledge that there are
no warranties, either express or implied, concerning the facilities, events, or
activities at the Radisson Suites Hotel.
