Welcome to Elephant Butte Lake, NM
Fishing Paradise of the Southwest

Elephant Butte lake, located 7 miles north of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico is a high desert reservoir, elevation 4,700 ft., which was formed by damming the Rio Grande River in 1916. At normal pool the lake is 43 miles long and holds 36,500 surface acres of water.
Elephant Butte Lake was first stocked with Striped Bass in 1974. The current lake record is 54 lbs. 8 oz. This monster was caught on April 1, 1992. For the first six months of 1992 there were SIX stripers caught that were 50 lbs or larger with untold numbers of Stripers from 30 to 50 lbs. No other lake in the country can boast of this quality. It's very probable that the next World Record Striper will come from this reservoir.
During the month of January-97 two over 50 lbs. Stripers were caught. If you really want a "TROPHY" this is the place! Elephant Butte is truly the home of the
"MUY GRANDE STRIPER!!!!!"
