I'd just like to say "Welcome" to all the group members who vist this site. We are trying to put together a web presentation here that will promote group communications and will provide useful and interesting information. Your comments are invited.

Don McConnell 10-21-1998 20:32:55

I want to thank CMSgt. Ted Zambos for undertaking the enormous task of this Web Site. If all that sign in would take the time to add something of interest this will be an ongoing history of the 4000th Support Group and those that served with the "BEST"!

Ted - You've done a great job with this web site. As the date for our reunion approaches, I've received many calls telling me that they heard about the Sep 2000 reunion from the web site. Jim Wheeler(Former 1000SOG/CC),John Patterson (Former Det 2)and I reviewed 30 years of scrapbooks today looking for items to include in our "Memories" section that will be displayed at the reunion. We are going to have a great time in Colorado Springs next September. Come One, Come all to the 4000th/1000th/6th/DMSP Space Operations Reunion between 7-11 September 2000 in Colorado Springs!

I'm not really sure but I think there's a federal statute forbidding use of the terms "Becker" and "crew control" in the same sentence. Be careful, Mitch!

Wow, DMSP has an impressive history. It'd be nice to see more from/about 1000 SOG / 6 SOPS people (like me). I have some pictures if you ever decide to expand. It'd also be nice to see the 4000th reunions become DMSP reunions for all of the generations of DMSPers.

Great Website. I'm still working at the previously closed "Spokane Satellite Tracking Facility."

Bill Huey 01-23-2001 19:18:41
Montgomery, AL, USA

I thought all of you would be interested in knowing that the latest DMSP satellite was scheduled to be launched from Vandenberg's Space Launch Complex 4 West on 01-20-2001. Sort of an "Inauguration Special". Now days the DMSP rides on top of an old Titan II ICBM rather than on the Thors that were used when I was in the program. The Titan II to be used in this launch sat on silo alert at McConnell AFB, KA from 1967-1986. I haven't heard whether the launch went on time or if it was successful.

Angola, Indiana, USA

Hello, fellow four granders, I was just checking in and reading the comments by you all. There is another web site on Loring.that I communicate with also The E-mail address is Loring_AFB@yahoogroups.com if anyone is interested. It is for all people that served at Loring over its life. and on occasion they post pictures of the base as it is today.A lot of the housing has been torn down.It is sad. after I retired in 82, I worked with Jerry Kersey in Topeka Kansas and Lived on the old Forbes AFB,In the officers wherry. It also was so sad, I would walk around the housing area and see it all grown up and just think at how it must have been when the Air Force occupied it.

great web site, thanks Ted. First two reunions were great ,the third will also be great as the people involved are the best. We must get more of us to enjoy. Please help to spread the word. There are many rooms at the Ramada Express and the rates are inexpensive,so invite all interested. Please add a note here if you would like to attend, your attending may convince an old friend to attend. We do not need to make a final head count until early Sep but we must find out how many people are interested in tours or boat rides and transportation between Las Vegas and Laughlin.EitherJohn Rogers or I will provide any information needed. Thanks again Ted,could not have bought a better web site at any price.

Ted Zambos 02-12-2002 21:32:02
Las Cruces, NM, USA

Thanks to all for the comments and participation. Sorry to say I no longer have the time for routinely updating this web site. I've removed some of the pages in an effort to streamline and reduce maintenance. I left pages that I felt would require little or no maintenance but would still be enjoyable to members. I will try to keep up with Email address changes so members can continue to locate each other and stay in touch. I did add a page for the 2002 Reunion using info provided by John Rogers. That may help get the word out. Best regards to all you 4-Granders!

Just wanted to say, what a great job Ted has been doing. Pat and I missed the first renion and are trying to work out a way to attend the next one. Looking at the web site brings back a lot of great memories. Good luck to you all.

The 4G lost Jean Walker 05/16/02. She was a retired former Commander's secretary with 50 years service to various DOD units including the 4G. She was just a great gal, who will be missed by all who knew her.

Hello to all the formed members of the BEST outfit in the USAF., I was proud to be involved from the start of Det 2 in 1963 through 1969. There are many fond memories about time spent on the hill. After I got my computer in 1997 I started trying to contact former members of Det 2 and was fortunate in locating quite a few of the members. One was CMSgt Ted Zambos. Through his efforts he started this web site which at the time of this writing over 5000 hits have been made. I can't say enough about his efforts in maintaining the web site. With these pages we were able to plan on the first reunion of the Det. We had 24 members that met in Omaha. The 2nd reunion was held in Colorado Springs and I think there were about 250 that attended there. I never got a final count. At this time the 3rd one was planned and will be held in Laughlin NE. Please attend if possible. Details can be obtained at this site. Contact either Capt Almquist or CMSgt Rogers with any further information. I would like to assist but at this time I am legally blind. I would like to hear from all so if you can find time drop me a line or two. Betty and I are hoping to attend the reunion providing my health lets me. Until then our thoughts will be with you all. Thanks once more Ted. MSgt Don McConnell

Old Sac Inspector 08-10-2002 21:32:11

I don't know what all the admiration for the 4000th is all about. I had the misfortune to inspect the Offutt location, as well as the Fairchild and Lorring locations back in the 70s. What I found was an organization that was so busy slapping itself of the back that it did not have time to comply with basic training and standardizaion requirements that every other SAC unit had to follow. I found that training records were incomplete. (Maybe people were trained, and maybe they weren't. There was incomplete documentation.) Standardization was not objective. My observations were that buddies on the same shifts were certifing that other buddies were competent to do the job. No other unit in SAC would have bought that. The final evidence was that I had an over 60% failure rate when I administered the standard SAC communications security exam to the individuals in the 4000th. It was kind of pitiful. Thank God there was soon a change in command and my boss could say "Hey, let's see what new blood can do in this outfit."

As one who was in the 4G from 1963 to 1977, I can truefully say the advent of the SAC inspections tended to take the spirit out of the group. The SAC bureaucrats may feel they really shaped up Bomb and Missile wings, both of which I also served in, but to the average troop they were as welcome and helpful as a case of the flu, and in most cases just got in the way, until they headed back to HQSAC to their little cubicles.

Let me see if I understand what the Old Sac Inspector was trying to say to us backslappers. When compared to other SAC units (primarily flying wings and missile units) using SAC inspection criteria the 4 G didn’t measure up. Hmmmm……Let’s see. If my memory serves me well the 4 G maintained an operational effectiveness in excess of 99%, (usually 99.99% and often 100%) month in and month out for at least the 14 years I was associated with it. Mind you, we weren’t pretending to do the mission like most of the SAC “warriors”, or playing in simulators where mistakes could be taken back. We were actually performing our mission 24/7/365. If we made a mistake data was lost and there were no “take it backs”. And, to my knowledge, we never had a reportable security incident. Morale was high, even though we were at some of the Air Force’s least desirable locations. In spite of occasional mistakes in record keeping, training was effective. Crewmembers operated their equipment without the “benefit” of checklists. They did it correctly because they understood exactly how their equipment worked and they understood the task at hand. We didn’t measure up? Maybe SAC was measuring the wrong things?

I see on the internet that a new DMSP bird was launched on 10/18/03. It is called OPS 54. Whew, time has really marched on since we handled some of the old ones, such as 0815.

In an earlier message I advised I just didn't have the time to actively maintain this web site. I did say I would keep up on email addresses, etc. I think I have that caught up now and will try to be more timely in future updates. I also reloaded much of the existing content. The ISP computer that hosts this site crashed and corrupted many of the files. They should load O.K. now. Let me know if they don't. Last but not least, Happy Holiday Wishes to all! Check out the new Happy Holiday page.

I am the Staff Sargent manning the PO console in the two Fair Ops pictures. I worked as a PRI and PO at Fair for two years (2/1976 - 2/1978) then transferred to HQ and worked as a Telem Analyst, Tech Training Instructor, then in Engineering where I wrote telemetry analysis programs for launch and early-orbit. I decided to separate instead of getting an overseas assignment and became a programmer for Telos Consulting working on the Ground Station upgrade project. I worked for several other aerospace companies in the Los Angeles area, then moved back to the SF Bay Area which is my home town (Livermore). I am now working at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab on super computer support. My wife Katie (of 31 years) stumbled onto this site and we just spent the last hour looking at all the pages. I still have a bunch of stuff from my 4 Grand days, like the DMSP Handbook and a print of a solar eclipse.

FAIRCHILD SSTF >>> 5th SCS / then DET1 6 SOPS .... .. 12/90 to 08/92. Most there would remember me, only 5 foot airman around and usually on the Commanders extra duty list. I remember then Lt.Ruff starting on our D crew. Went back to the old site for the first time in 12 years, sad to see it down, but FLAG still flying made me feel good. Havent heard from then MAJOR BRAZO wondering if anyone knows his whereabouts. Comedy FAIR: I remember carrying a stick with me from the ADMIN building to the FSOC, due to the two badgers that harrassed the crews when we walked down to the site and them attacking the SPs (who couldnt shoot them) but I heard later they carried extra rounds they bought at Walmart in case the badgers became a little to poed at us. Hope to hear from you all soon. 73 all.

Thanks Ted for the info regarding this site. I was In Det. 4 8th Weather Squardron at Loring ( 8/67 thru 9/70) It's great to see a web sight like this. Although not a membeer of th Four Grand, I still feel a kinship to others in Blue. Especially those stationed in Northern Maine. Thanks again. Tom Kane

What an honor to see this website, I current work with the wonderful folks at Colorado Springs at Schriever who currently take passes with DMSP at the Air Force Reserve Squadron who is currently under Lt.Col Mark Husted's command. I also used to work at Offutt AFB with the 6SOPS there before they turned it over to NOAA. I currently work at NASA at White Sands and I get the honor to see Ted Zambos on a daily basis. The history of DMSP is all we talk about at the 6SOPS. Great Website Ted!! Later Art

I am alive and well. Rode Katrina out in the house. What a heck of a ride that was. Wife evacuated to Indiana with all the dogs. We have some damage (roof, fence, out buildings). A lot I work with lost everything. Biloxi, Gulfport, Pass Cristian all hit hard. The eye passed over here and I am 60 miles W/NW of Biloxi. Just got phone back this past week. Took 2 weeks for power.

So are there plans for another reunion? Just spent an hour or so walking down the 4 Grand memory lane. I see the Old SAC Inspector was impressed, but he's still grumpy since we continued to excell despite the overburden of regs and rule.

Ran onto a 4 Grander the other day, Vito Tominelli, he retired in 1976 at the 4G Offutt in admin. He was wondering whatever happened to Ron Kalbflesh? I can't remember if he was still at the 4G when I retired or what.

Found the website while looking for an old 4 Grand uniform patch. Stationed at Blotner from Jan82 to Feb83 (2 winters!). I always thought Liza would live forever. Did anyone ever really know how old she was? Here's an interesting note to those who didn't already know it: 2 of my ucles worked with the Army Corps of Engineers and actually built the Blotner Site!

I want to add a comment to the old SAC Inspector. I don't know what his problem is but I sure would like to see his butt in the PO chair during a full load and data recovery and set all the clocks before fade.or put him in the ATO seat at max EL and have a tape slew. Then we would know who could not measure up. Thanks Jim

Sorry to have to do this, but it looks like I'm going to have to remove the guestbook. I just can't keep up with deleting all the garbage postings we get from spammers all over the world. If anyone from the 4G wants their own copy of what is here so far, I'll be glad to email it.
