B-2 "Spirit" Operations

B-2 Landing Diego Garcia

From the Air Force Times:  B-2 "Spirits" from the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Missouri, flew three days of missions early in ENDURING FREEDOM.  The bombing mission was a 40-44 hour mission, bombing en route to a recovery at Diego Garcia.  The inbound crew (of just 2 pilots!) would deplane, and a waiting crew would fly the aircraft directly home to Whiteman.  A 30 hour flight.  The engines would run in excess of 80 hours continuously on these missions. The 509th Bomb Wing has the distinction of being the onlyBomb Wing in any Air Force to drop nuclear weapons on the enemy.
