1977-1978
Keith Millett <keithmillett@kcmtruck.com>
My name is Keith Millett & I would like to consider myself part of the DG Alumni.  I was there with NMCB 74 in 77/78 I think, I can tell you that when I arrived there we slept in Sea Huts & when I left we were in air conditioned mods.
     Unfortunately I have cooked to many brain cells over the years to accurately create a timeline of certain parts of my life, i.e. 1976 thru 1982.
     I have been able to find a couple of the guys from my battalion, but would like to find more. We spent a lot of time together in Okinawa, Phillipines & Diego Garcia as a GREAT finale.  Please contact me if you think you could be of any help.
Thanx, Keith

1971
My father, FT Calvert, was there in 1971
NAME = Kyle Calvert Grimes
MY QUEST = To find someone who knew my father
E-MAIL = Kyle@igrimes.com

MY WARSTORY = My father, FT Calvert, was on the 9 man advance team in 1971.  I am looking for anyone who knew him and can relay any stories to me.  Sadly, he passed away in 1994.  Thank you.

NAME = Diana Strickley
MY QUEST = Serious one: My daughter wants to find info on her dad
VT of a SWALLOW = Hey - terminal is terminal - does it really matter how fast (unless you have to clean up the mess...)
E-MAIL = dianastrickley@yahoo.com
NATIONALITY = US
SERVICE = was NAVY
UNIT = R-site
RANK/RATE/JOB = Was ET2, now blessed civilian life
MY INTEREST IN DG IS = Geo-political Rabble Rousing
SUBJECT OF MY STORY: = Actually, I Have a Real Story To Tell
MY WARSTORY = OK - first, for all that thought I "got what I deserved" when I got pregnant - sorry, have to disagree on that one!  Don't think I really deserve the great kid (almost adult) I have!
    Anyway, REGARDLESS OF PERSONAL FEELINGS OR LOYALTIES ABOUT EITHER MYSELF OR STEVE, PLEASE HELP!  THERE IS A YOUNG ADULT WOMAN WHO WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHO HER FATHER IS.
    Her father is (former?) Royal Marine Steve Peter Morgan. He was a radio operator and was on the island until December 1989.  He followed on to the Command Training Centre in Lympstone, Exsmouth, Devon.  I have not heard from him since I was about 6 months pregnant, and have had difficulty tracking him down because his name is so common.  A mutual Brit friend indicated Steve may have married an American and left the service not long after leaving the island.
     Again, if you have any information that may help me to find him, my daughter would really appreciate it.
[Editor's Note:  Come on you guys, I know someone out there knows Steve.  Tell him to be a man about this and contact Diana so his daughter can make contact!]

Jody Pasalich <tale_feathers@yahoo.com> is looking for RM2 Leslie Ann Salko from Pennsylvania.  They were stationed together at Hampton Roads in 89-91 and Jody thinks Leslie went to DG after that.

REUNION ANNOUNCEMENT - AMERICAN AMPHIBIOUS FORCE ASSOCIATION

HERE WE GO AGAIN “GATORS”,

It’s time to mark your calendars and start planning the  AAFA Reunion being held at the home of the LST 325 in Evansville, IN.  What a great week has been planned for you to take advantage of either all or in part.

The dates run from Tuesday, the 25th of September 2007 to Sunday, the 30th of September, 2007. The base of operations will be: The Executive Inn Evansville, 600 Walnut Street, Evansville, IN 47708.  We have rooms blocked in anticipation of a large turnout.

You may make your room reservations by calling the Executive Inn Evansville, in Evansville by calling their toll-free number 1-877-424-0888. Please acknowledge to them you are part of the AAFA to get the favorable rate of $75.00 per night (plus taxes), which includes breakfast for two (2) each morning. You will be given coupons upon check-in.
Because of the large turnout for the weekend, I would strongly recommend you making your reservation EARLY, as rooms go very fast. They are already sold out of any unblocked rooms on the 28th and 29th. Make your reservation as you will have the opportunity to cancel 72 hrs prior without any charge.

The program for the week is as follows:
                  Registration fee $25.00
                  Banquet $25.00 (Friday 9/28/07) They will give us reserved tables!
                  USO Show $10.00 (Saturday Eve 9/29/07]
                  Breakfast aboard LST 325 – FREE (*)
                  (or you can opt for having breakfast at the hotel)
                  LCVP “Higgins Boat” rides – FREE (*)
                  LVT “Amphibious Tank” rides – FREE (*)
                  Casino Aztar (Evening) reception – FREE (*) [Wednesday 9/26/07]
                  Reception “On Board” LST 325 – FREE (*) [Thursday Eve 9/27/07]
                  Hotel “Presidential Suite” Hospitality Room – FREE (*)
                  Bus to Evansville Shipyard site (where the LST’s were built – FREE (*)
                  Bus to Eastland Mall (shopping) – FREE (*)
                  Bus to Evansville Museum (tour) – FREE (*)

(*) PLEASE NOTE THE ITEMS MARKED; THESE EVENTS ARE ALL INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION FEE ($25.00) PER PERSON.

Here is the BIG ONE: They are going to have a couple of cruises on the LST 325, which will last approximately 2 to 2 ½ hrs on Thursday 9/27/07. The only catch to it is, AND THIS IS BECAUSE OF INSURANCE PURPOSES, you must be a member of the LST 325 Memorial. Some of us are already members. After having discussions with the powers to be, they have agreed to give the AAFA an exclusive cruise (AAFA people only) if we can come up with 150 members in the LST 325 Memorial. The cost would be $20.00 per person and this would give you membership and the AAFA exclusive cruise. Please see the form to be filled out and returned to the treasurer, Dave Miller.

Also, if you are interested, for $20.00 you can have an “airplane flyover of the LST and city. Check our sign up sheet for that.

We will have a SMALL hospitality room, which will be available for each LST to hold a meeting, if they wish, or do with what we want.

The $25.00 registration fee gets you into ALL the FREE events and BUS transportation to the events and the ship all week.

It is really a very busy week and you can participate in all and/or any part of it. It sure would be nice if we could get enough to participate and have an “EXCLUSIVE” cruise on the “325”. You could not “BUY” this cruise at this price, anywhere! I already know of 4 or 5 who are members of the LST 325 Memorial.

Looking forward to having “EVERYONE” there.

Respectfully,

The Reunion Committee

I'm looking for a Deb Garris that worked as an ET at NCTS (R-Site) on Diego in 1988. Can you help?

Jeff Sharp <jeff.sharp@yahoo.com>
I was stationed on Diego Garcia from 1992-1993 with Patrol Wing one. I was wondering if you would post my contact info in your war stories section. I am looking for AW2 Steven Gessner. He has my dam shark teeth :D While there I enjopyed deep sea fishing. My last day on the island I caught an 8' black tip shark. Steve was going to get it's teeth mounted and forwarded on to me at my next duty station. Anyway, I'm sure it's mounted over his mantel somewhere. LMAO! Anyway, I love your site, has been great to walk down memory lane.  Thanks, and fair seas!

I am looking for ET1 Angel Garcia (Ret), used to be stationed in Diego Garcia.  Wondering if you have any information on him.  Trying to let him know of a fallen comrad.

MY WARSTORY = My daughter, Andrea, was a member of the crew of the L.Y. Spear, out of Norfolk, VA. Her ship was called up during the Iranian Crisis in 1980.  She was never where she was supposed to be at the time to be there, she had more Captain's Mast's than anybody else I know of. She wound up in the brig and in the engine room, on bread and water, while in Diego Garcia. But, she was a brilliant woman of 18 who didn't know who she was. She could have attended Annapolis, but puposely flunked the test so she could follow in her father's footsteps (he was in the Merchant Marine at the time)around the world. So, she opted for a ship, and she got the SPEAR. She became one of the first women Shellbacks on a non-combatant vessel. Her father never became a Shellback, since he was on non-navy ships while crossing, but he was an Officer in the Naval Reserve, so Andrea saluted him when they were together. Andrea was a sweet, kind, and generous woman, who loved her family very much - maybe that is why she screwed up her naval career and lasted only two years until it was mutually agreed upon that she exit the service. She was married, first marriage, to Fred Cosier, who was aboard the LY SPEAR - has anyone heard of him? or heard from him recently? He doesn't know that our Andrea, at age 40, died of breast, lung and brain cancer on July 19,2002. We miss her terribly and these websites really contribute to our well being. She is up in heaven now, looking down upon all of you, all of us, sending nothing but golden words to cover our heads as we plow along in life. If you knew her, please send me an e-mail at: Clara19126@msn.com - I am Trish Schiesser, her mother. God Bless everyone of you.

MY WARSTORY = I was sittin here just remembering my time on the "Rock". Decided to look up this site and see if there were any new exciting or funny stories since I was there 2 years ago, (wow time does fly!)  Man you sure get sick of that place after a while. It was definatly fun as hell and I had some awesome experiences while I was there. I met some really cool people there, one in particular that I grew very fond of, his nickname is OZZ. We had some pretty fun and memorable times together,to say the least:)! He was so awesome and wish I was in contact with him now. He made my time there go by so fast, he left before me and I was heartbroken:( We kept in contact for a while afterward and for no apparrent reason I don't hear from him anymore and don't even know how to contact him. That makes me really sad because he was so awesome and I just hate someone as special as him  to just dissappear so suddenly out of my life. If it wasn't for this crazy island that I just so happened to get lucky enough to get sent to I wouldn't have had the amazing experiences I had or met some really cool people and saw such awesome things! The ocean is beautiful not to mention the beautiful white sand that looks like snow! The beautiful sunrises and sunsets on this "paradise". The tropical rains that last for days!! Ahhh the memories, seems like so long ago yet just like yesterday. Wierd to think that I was on such a long flight to and from that far away island!!!

    MARCH 24 2006

    I'M NOT A HERO JUST A MAN WHO SERVED HIS COUNTRY AND DID IT      WILLINGLY. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING THAT A LOT OF MEN WOULDN'T HAVE DONE. I DID WHAT I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO DO , AND I DID IT BECAUSE I WANTED TOO. I SERVED MY TIME AND WAS GLAD I DID/ AND I WOULD DO IT AGAIN EVEN/THOUGH I MIGHT DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY/KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW. I'M WRITING THIS STORY BECAUSE IT IS THE TRUTH AS I KNOW IT TO BE, AND MAYBE IT CAN HELP US ALL TO KNOW IT.
   THE SHIP I WAS ON THE USS EDSON DD946 WAS A GOOD SHIP WITH A GOOD CREW AND A VERY GOOD SKIPPER. WE DID OUR BEST TO SERVE OUR COUNTRY.
   WE WERE IN THE WATERS OF VIETNAM AND WERE IN DANGER MANY TIMES, CLOSE TO THE COAST AND NEAR THE SHORE. WE WEREW UNDER ENEMY FIRE MANY TIMES, AND EVEN GOT HIT.I REMEMBER BEING SCARED A FEW TIMES/ OR MAYBE YOU MIGHT SAY EXCEITED.
   ON THE MORNING OF MAY 8TH 1967, WE PULLED INTO THE HARBOR OF DANANG. VIETNAM. WE TIED TO THE PIER IN A FUNNY KINDA .IT WAS A SMALL PIER. THE FANTAIL OF THE SHIP WAS TIED TO THE PIER,AND THE BOW STUCK WAY OUT.WE HAD TO DROP THE STARBOARD ANCHOR AS THE SHIP WAS TOO BIG TO FIT THE PIER.I BIEING THE JACK OF THE DUST WAS ALONG WITH A FEW OTHERS,ALOUD TO GO ASHORE TO SEE WHAT THEY HAD IN THE LINE OF SUPPLIES THAT THEY MAY HAVE HAD ON BASE THERE. I SPENT ALMOST TWO HOURS ON SHORE BEFORE IT WAS TIME TO GET BACK TO THE SHIP.
   WE GOT BACK JUST BEFORE THE COMADORE AND HIS ENTARAGE GOT BACK.

   WHILE I WAS ON THE FANTAIL OF THE SHIP WAITING FOR THE SHIP TO GET UNDERWAY , AN AIRPLANE THAT WAS SPRAYING ON THE SHORELINE FLEW OVER THE FANTIAL OH THE SHIP. WHAT EVER IT WAS SPRAYING,IT SPRAYED ON ME. I THOUGHT IT WAS SPRAYING FOR BUGS AND I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO GET OUT OF THE WAY . I GOT A GOOD DOSE OF WHAT EVER CAME OUT OF THE PLANE.
   WE WERE YOUNG AND THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY THAT THEY TRY TO SPRAY A SHIP.WE HAD A GOOD LAUGH BUT I DIDN'T KNOW THAT IT WOULD CAUSE MY DAUGHTER TO BE BORN WITH A HOLE IN HER BACK . SHE WAS BORN WITH SPINAL/BIFIDIA.
   THE DECK LOGS OH THE SHIP SHOW PEOPLE GETTING ON AND OFF THE SHIP. THESE SAME PEOPLE WERE ON THE SHIP BEFORE WE DOCKED AND ANCHORED!HOW DID THEY DID THEY GET ON AND THE SAME WAY I DID THEY WALKED.
   YET THE VETERNS AFFAIRS STILL SAYS THAT I'M NOT AN IN COUNTRY VETERAN AND REFUSES TO GIVE MY DAUGHTER TO MONIES THAT SHE DESERVES/SHE DIDN'T ASK TO BE BORN WITH A HOLE IN HER BACK.

                                      SINCERELY YOURS

   He should have reported around '90.  I really appreciate your help.
I am trying to find some information on a friend of mine.  He and I served together onboard the USS King DDG41 when he took a 1 year assignment to DG.  Nobody ever heard from him again.  Our ship's website informs us that he is deceased but nobody knows anything more than that.
     Would you mind posting an inquiry on the site to see if anybody knows anything about Mark Gordy, MM3 USN?  He was a great guy, genuine and good hearted that just wanted to find a place that offered him cold beer and softball games 365 days a year.  DG sounded like heaven to him.
     He left a lasting impression on all that met him so something should pop up, even if its just info that he completed his tour in good health and moved on.  My email is patrickg_dwyer@hotmail.com in the event that you can do something for me.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I am so sorry to know that he died at a relatively young age of cancer. I would appreciate it if you could put me in touch with the person who gave you the info on David - Thomas Lawson. I would like to know more about David. He was a good friend of mine aboard the USS ORISKANY in 1972 - 73, during the last year of the war. We both served in X-Division. He was a JO3 at that time..
     Thanks for any info you can get for me regarding David.

From:             "Lenhoff, Sarah A. LT (ROICC)" <LenhoffS@dg.navy.mil>
Mr. Morris,
     My name is LT Sarah Lenhoff. I am a CEC Officer stationed on Diego Garcia and I have been looking through your websites over the last couple of
months. I enjoy reading everybody experiences and viewing pictures of what the island look like back then. A lot has changed, including the mixture of personnel. There are only about 40 CBs left on this island, half of which belong to a rotating Detachment from the active Battalions in Port Hueneme and Gulf Port. The rest of us are considered permanent party (usually 1 year rotations) and occupy jobs in the Public Works Department. What we still have in common is being known for our parting and troublemaker attitudes.
     I am writing because I am in charge of the Diego Garcia Seabee Ball, which will be held on 11 February of next year.  After reviewing your online pictures, I was wondering if you had high resolution digital pictures that you could send me via email. As I am sure you are aware, the pictures located your website are of lower quality and are almost impossible to enlarge without loosing resolution. I would need pictures around 1 to 2 MB in size in order to properly enlarge and print them. If you have them available, I will let you pick which pictures you would like to send. I would need around 10 good ones of places around the island or CBs doing what they do best.
     Please let me know if I can be of any service in updating your webpage.
Thank you.

From:            Helen.Windsor@addleshawgoddard.com

     I am researching my father Memoirs which include (after the invason of DG, of course) time on Seychelles (summer 42) and Mauritius (late-1942).  He mentions a lady "Flo" from Reunion.  Where is the best place on Reunion to research who this was for, try as I may, I cannot find any good sources on that Island?  I know its a long shot, but you've got to try!  I already have a researcher about to start some work for me on Mauritius in September.

Many thanks.

From:            "JOHN HUARD SR" <johnhuardsr@msn.com>
     Ted, my name is John D Huard Sr and I served on board the Uss Monticello LSD-35 from 68-72. The reason I'm writing to you is that Ron Whaley contributed a picture to the Vernon County website of your ship passing behind an LSD which I believe to be my ship. I would like to ask him if it is, and if he has any other photos of her that he would like to share with me. I remember our ship arriving at Diego Garcia and wondering why that LST was painted totally white. It didn't take long for us to understand why. If you could ask him if I could contact him, I would appreciate it.
Sincerely,
John

LOOKING FOR JESSE R. EDWARDS - 1977-1985
Subject: Help
Date: Mon, 26 Aug 2002 10:49:51 EDT
From:  FiddleDee@aol.com
My name is Dee Anna Braxton.  I live in North Carolina.  I have an uncle who we can't find.  His last known place of residence was Diego Garcia where he worked on a dock doing (I think) refueling for many years (1977 through 1985).  He was an Army vet but was working there for the Navy.  His name is Jesse R. (which stands for Rupert) Edwards.  His family  in the states lived in El Paso TX but originally he is from Rose Hill NC.  I haven't seen him since my momma (his sister) died in 1984.  My father died this spring and I was going through some old boxes of my mom's stuff and found more info to help me locate him.  His family in TX hasn't helped me so I figure I am on my own.  I have some stuff that belonged to his father that rightfully should be his to give his daughter.  I would love to find him. He is quite a character.  Someone in your bunch should have some knowledge of him.  Please help.  I am running out of family.
Dee
